I am a native English speaker,
but I also speak German, Portuguese, and Polish.
And after learning three languages,
I really have a feel for what does and does not work.
And one of the most important things
is that you have to forget how textbooks,
how classes are teaching you to learn a language.
It is the wrong order.
It is really, really backwards.
We need to forget textbooks and the traditional way
that they taught us in school.
True fluency actually happens
when you start with vocabulary first, not grammar charts.
Now we are all confused about this.
We start with verb conjugations
and maybe some words here and there, but it's all backwards.
What you really need to learn a language are basic words.
And think about it.
When you know most common words,
you can understand most anything.
And you can also still communicate.
You can say eat, this, that, there, I want this, right?
Even if you're not using the correct grammar,
you can use your words to communicate something.
If you know grammar and know vocabulary,
you literally can't get anything out.
You are stuck.
Now, when I learned my first foreign language,
I did not start this way.
I started the traditional way.
I mixed grammar and vocabulary,
listening, reading, writing, all of it.
And it took way longer.
Then as I became a more seasoned language learner,
I started by tackling the most common 10,000 words first.
Now I know that sounds extremely daunting and it is work,
but your fluency truly grows so much faster
if you tackle the most common words first.
Now, if you've seen any of my videos before,
you have heard me stress about this.
Even just learning the top 100 most common words
is gonna get you so far ahead so much quicker.
Now, the other thing is that once you have
a massive vocabulary, you can build on it.
That is when real-world immersion starts to bridge the gaps.
When things like watching Netflix, watching YouTube videos,
reading articles, listening to music,
all of that starts to bridge the gap
between vocabulary and actually understanding
and speaking the language.
But the real question is,
how do we actually acquire 10,000 words?
It sounds extremely daunting.
And how do you just start learning these words
without messy Excel sheets, a stack of flashcards?
I mean, you name it, there are a million methods.

so you are in a learning stage with this word.
You've seen it, but you don't quite 100% know it.
Then the next time you encounter this word,
whether it's in the same article or a different article,
it's gonna be the same color.
And if you click it again, check the word again,
you can change the status to familiar.
So you're just one step further.
You're really getting to know this word.
That then changes the color to purple.
And then the last time, if you see this word again
and you click it again,
you can change the status from familiar to known.
So it changes from blue to orange to purple to black.
And you know, it goes from being completely unknown
to known.
And what's really cool about this is I read somewhere,
it takes about seven times encountering a word
until you truly know it.
And so using a platform like Lingua Verbum,

right then and there, and see the definition,
make sure you really get it,
