Thousands of people gathered throughout the day at the Flight 93 National Memorial to pay their respects and attend ceremonies honoring the passengers and crew of Flight 93.
The 9/11 memorial site, built in the field near rural Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where the United Airlines plane crashed, has become what many describe as hallowed ground.
The thought that inspired the creation of the memorial is "a common field one day became a field of honor forever."

Meanwhile, until this day, 25 years ago,
Shanksville, PA was not much known
beyond its rural borders.
Now it's a living testament to human selflessness.
Today, crowds gathered in that field
that became the final resting place
for the heroes aboard United Flight 93.
The men and women on that hijacked plane
who heard what was happening
and determined in those moments
not to let it happen somewhere else.
More than 9,000 days later now,
the grateful devotion of those heroes
was again as it always will be,
on display.
Action News reporter Taronda Thomas was there today.
The site where Flight 93 crashed
is also the final resting place
for the passengers and crew.
Today, thousands gathered to remember them.
Artwork that weighs heavy on the heart.
This just has a very different level of meaning.
Because these are the faces of Flight 93.
The name Flight 93 has become synonymous
with ideals of bravery and sacrifice.
The Flight 93 National Memorial
built in the field
where the United Airlines plane went down
near rural Shanksville, Pennsylvania,
after passengers and crews
fought back against terrorists
who'd hijacked the plane on 9-11.
Their selfless act prevented Flight 93
from reaching the United States Capitol.
25 years later,
family members, political leaders, and the public
gather for remembrance ceremonies.
A wreath laid at the Wall of Names.
40 brave souls.
Officer Leroy W. Homer, Jr.
Each name read aloud,
including Lewis Mackey II of Marlton, New Jersey.
To see the love and the support
that everybody gives to every single family,
not just ours, it's amazing.
Among those in the somber crowd,
flight attendants based out of Newark, New Jersey,
where Flight 93 originated.
We flew with them, they were our friends.
We, you know, so it's our way of honoring.
Remembering the moment a common field
became sacred ground,
and everyday people became heroes.
God bless them all.
May we never forget.
Another structure built at this site
shows the path of the plane
as it approached the field.
Wreaths were also laid there
in honor of all who died on September 11th.
