A band member gives a detailed tour of their Victory Garden North American tour bus, highlighting its evolution from a party hub to a zen sanctuary. The video covers the bus's amenities, sustainability efforts, and various mishaps, before transitioning into a chaotic attempt by the band to play a card-based version of Catan.
I'd like myself some tuna. Canned tuna. It stinks the place up.
Are you eating the canned tuna?
Yeah.
Is that you?
That's me.
If you're ever on a tour bus, just don't put any solids in it. Definitely don't poop in it.
Yo! What's up? Come on in.
Well, this is the bus. This is where we live on the road.
So, we are just wrapping up the Victory Garden tour in North America.
We're taking it to Europe at the end of the year, but we've done 40 shows so far, so today is show 41.
Today is show 42, and we released a new album on May 1st called Victory Garden,
and we're going to show you around the bus, and the dudes are here.
So, this is Francois.
Hello.
This is Eric.
So, these two TVs are kind of just a fixture. We like to have these pretty landscapes going.
We did some World Cup viewing earlier in the tour.
We kind of have a tradition on tour we haven't done yet.
Maybe we'll pull it out in these last couple days.
We're watching Popstar, the Andy Samberg one.
Just getting everyone set up here on the drive and watching that,
but honestly not getting a ton of use out of these this time around.
Yeah, it used to be, it's kind of been a steady, either the way, wherever you look at it,
an incline or a decline.
When we first started on a bus, it was a party bus.
It was like, we'd have friends in here.
There'd be just like shenanigans going on, and you know, obviously watching some movies.
We'd watch some TVs.
We'd watch The Wire, South Park, Key & Peele, very all the time,
and as it's progressed, the bus has just become more of like a zen place for us.
It's pretty mellow.
You're not going to find anyone else really in here other than the band,
and Lloyd, our tour manager front house, and Lizzie, our ATM.
So this is one of two buses that we have taken out.
There's also Colder Kids as their bus, but this is just for the band.
We've been doing it this way for a while.
It used to be like a frat house, and now it's become more of a monastery.
The crew bus is actually the bus that the hijinks happen on.
You finish a show, it's already kind of late.
Really just come here, have a bite to eat, decompress.
The adrenaline is still flowing from the show,
so this is a good place to try and catch your breath and get ready for bed.
We kind of have this water jug system here.
In tours past, we partnered up with companies like Reverb
to try and make tour as carbon neutral as possible.
So we just do what we can.
We really try and limit any use of plastics and water bottles.
We just have thermoses, and we try and fill up this way.
It's usually the easiest thing.
And a tip for any of you who have not really slept on a bus before.
Do not use that water to brush your teeth with.
Don't use that.
Okay, well, there's all sorts of crazy ---- in here.
So now, I mean, we're getting a little older now,
so we need to get some of that.
We have some of the swole stuff here.
We have the creatines, some protein bars,
and I like myself some tuna, canned tuna.
It stinks the place up.
Are you eating the canned tuna?
Yeah.
Is that you?
That's me.
Let's see what else we got in here.
These are ridiculously small and shallow little things.
There's really not much shoes fit in there.
These are kind of just for decor, really.
What else do we got in here?
Some more snacks.
Nothing too crazy here.
We got some peanut butter, some macadamia nuts,
and then we have family and friends who give us stuff,
so we'll have cakes and lots of goodies.
Yeah, I got some goodies, some family goodies in the fridge
if you want to have a look.
Let's see here.
So the fridge is pretty much exclusively beverages,
but I do have a can of homemade raspberry preserves
that my grandma made that she gave me when we played in Toronto.
And then my aunt, because I'm Canadian,
my aunt brought me some maple butter.
This is called tire.
It's like you melt it down, and then you put it over snow,
and you kind of twist it over like a Popsicle stick,
and it's just absolutely delicious.
Maple taffy, I guess, is the English term for it,
but tire means to pull in French.
So I got some good Canadian goodies in here.
And then otherwise, yeah, it's just like drinks
and leftover aftershow and some Del Taco hot sauces
that I'm going to be taking home.
We have, keeping it in a theme, clearly Canadian,
which is always a treat.
We have, I've been drinking root beer a lot.
Like, I love having root beer on stage,
so we keep some pretty good ones.
And it's just like beer, I don't know who's drinking White Claws.
I don't ever see anyone drinking White Claws,
so I'm not sure who those belong to.
Yeah, mostly coffee.
I think someone was making Bloody Marys at some point.
We make, like, protein smoothies,
so we have almond milk and oat milk.
The guys like wine, so we've got, at any given time,
you know, some beers and some wines in here.
We don't really mess with the liquor so much anymore.
So, yeah, it's pretty straightforward.
Let's see.
This is, yeah, so again, for smoothies,
people keep forgetting that this is the freezer
and throwing beers in here, and then they keep shattering.
So that's been a fun thing.
And then this, ah, this one's totally empty.
I don't even know what temperature it's supposed to be at.
To be fair, this is the fourth bus we've been on on this tour.
We've had some kind of issues.
We got in kind of a bit of an accident getting into Manhattan.
The top of our bus just scraped completely under an overpass.
So we've had to move a lot of buses,
so it's kind of like it's not super situated,
even though we've been on tour since mid-May.
That was scary. That was the first time it's ever happened.
We were all sitting in the front lounge,
and it was the day before the next championship parade,
so they had shut down basically any, you know, convenient way to get into the city.
And so we took FDR, and I guess there was some sort of issue with clearance.
So all of a sudden, the whole bus just went...
It tore off all of the air conditioning units,
which is a shame because it was a really, really nice bus.
This one's really nice too, but it's, yeah,
we've been playing, like, musical chairs with the buses on this run a little bit.
So last night in Minneapolis,
the Cold War Kids guys introduced us
to some of the people from Settlers of Catan,
which is, I guess they know the people who work there.
And they came out as guests of the show, and they brought us gifts.
So we started playing Settlers of Catan a long time ago in the early days as a band.
We used to live with one another in multiple houses,
first and second record.
So when we're not writing music and hanging out,
sometimes we'd be playing Settlers of Catan.
They gifted us these.
It's called Catan on the Road.
And it's basically the card version that you can play in 15 minutes, which is nice.
And this is the first time we're trying to set it up.
So Eric and I are trying to read the rules.
And if you know Catan, you know that explaining the board game to someone
is, like, the worst thing ever.
But playing is really fun once everyone knows.
So we're going to give it a shot and see what happens.
Like any good bus, there's a toilet.
And I'm sure for fans of the show, you know the rules.
No solids, no poops, no toilet paper, nothing like that.
It's strictly for pee.
And I'm a pretty, like, calm, non-confrontational person.
Probably the time I've lost my mind the most on someone and really crashed out
was this random dude was on our bus in Nashville after the show.
We were all, you know, tired.
We'd been out for a couple months.
I told him, like I tell everyone, no solids.
He came out immediately.
He's like, hey, I think your toilet's broken.
And I just went in there and he had put, like, a wad of toilet paper.
And I'm like, I just told you not to do that because you didn't tell me that.
And I unloaded on him.
And I actually made him put his hand in it and pull this wad of, like, pee-covered toilet paper.
And then I just, like, was, get off the bus!
Get the **** out of here!
And, like, that's so not me.
But it's a really important rule because this is, like, you know, there's six of us on here.
This goes down.
We're in kind of dire straits.
So if you're ever on a tour bus, just don't put any solids in it.
Definitely don't poop in it.
It's true.
There's a shower in there, too, which is nice.
I used to shower, the first tours, I used to shower in there pretty much every night.
And then all of a sudden I was, like, felt, I was told it was gross.
But I think I'm going to do it tonight.
I think we all are.
While the bus is moving.
It's actually more fun.
So these are the bunks.
As you guys know, because we have two buses, one for the crew and one for the band,
we have condo bunks, which is a luxury.
This is my bunk.
We get to sit up in our bunks.
You see our guitarist, Jake, is in there.
Demonstrating.
Demonstrating how to sleep.
And so it's been great.
I mean, we usually try to keep this pretty clean.
Like, these days, it's a sad state of affairs.
Very clean and nice.
We have our own bedding and ----.
But it was funny.
Back in the day, we used to do a lot of pranks.
And so Fran had found a block of brie cheese.
And he put it under my pillow.
And that first night, before I went to bed, I noticed it.
And I was like, this is Fran, because it would have been a whole tour of just pranks.
So I took the brie, and I put it under the fitted sheet,
so he wouldn't find it.
And it lived in his bunk for almost three weeks.
I don't know if it was three weeks.
It was long enough that I woke up one day,
and my face was covered in something really gelatinous and smelly.
And I was like, did I vomit on myself in the middle of the night?
And I realized, yeah, it had been in there for a while.
And from that day forth, we were like, okay, shared space.
We're going to cool it on the pranks.
Because it was really, really gross.
And he got the better of me on that one, so I still hold it against that.
As you can see, we have our name tags on here,
just in case we are too drunk and we forget.
This is our junk bunk.
Put all the random stuff in there, some fluff and fold back.
Sometimes you can't do laundry, you have to do the fluff and fold.
This is my bunk.
You get the chance to make it your own little home.
So I got pictures of my family, my kitties.
I do spend a lot of time in my bunk.
On this type of tour, you get a whole variety of backstages.
Some of them are really nice, great facilities.
Some of them are terrible.
So for the terrible ones, I just watch movies in here.
I have my Steam Deck.
I'm playing Red Dead Redemption, which is like a comfort game for me.
Oddly enough, I just like to ride my horse around.
But yeah, you spend a lot of time in here.
So you get a nice pillow.
Everyone's got their own sheets.
It's a nice place to just sort of rest your nervous system.
You play in front of a lot of people every night.
It's all high-octane and stuff.
As I get older, I appreciate the time to decompress more and more.
All right, here is the back lounge.
Another one of those things where back in the day,
this was kind of like the smoking commune.
We'd have different paraphernalia and have some jays floating about
and some volcanoes and all that stuff.
We'd be hanging out here watching movies, playing video games.
Playing dice.
Playing dice, playing Lodi.
And now it's just kind of like maybe the quiet space.
Usually when you're on tour and you are still driving,
sometimes the drive is really long.
You don't get into the city until like 10 or 11.
You need to get on the phone, catch up with your partner,
catch up with your family.
This is kind of like the most private space that you can go.
You can close it up, you can lock it.
We've had people getting locked in here before,
but it's usually manageable.
It's basically that room from real world
where people go and talk to their family
and just dish on like,
ugh, I messed up last night.
I played the wrong note and I was so frustrated.
Samir put a block of cheese in my ******* bed.
Something like that.
We do have guitars and stuff back here,
so if anyone wants to work on writing or running stuff for the set,
we're going to try a song we haven't done in a while.
It's a good place to do little mini rehearsals.
But yeah, it's like most of the bus over the course of our career.
I mean, I have books for my kids back here,
so it's definitely more tame than it was like 10 years ago
where it felt a little bit like a dive bar.
And now it's just like a calm little spot.
This is also a place where each one of us has a mobile recording studio.
So we have them in the bays underneath.
We'll take them out to the hotel room sometimes.
Sometimes a friend's been doing a lot of scoring work,
so he'll maybe sneak to the back over here or up front there.
And this lounge, unfortunately, doesn't have a desk,
so it kind of makes it less available to be able to do stuff like that.
Fortunately, the front lounge has two desks,
so you'll often see people on Logic or on Ableton
or just kind of doing some general stuff, getting things done.
So this has been a tour of our tour bus.
This is very young giant.
We're just finishing up the Victory Garden tour through North America.
Check out tour dates and merch on youngthegiant.com.
We'll be out on tour essentially the rest of the year
and next year kind of internationally in the States doing festivals.
It's just the beginning of the album's release,
so we hope to see you out there.
All right?
Yeah, you got to get out.
You're not going to make out back there.
Okay, so I'm going to play.
I'm going to build a road.
Right?
So then I grab it from here.
I think.
And then I put it here.
So a quick update on Catan on the go.
I don't know what the hell's going on, but we're having fun.
I put this here.
Yep, yep, okay.
And then I can still build because I have a road,
so I'm going to build another road, I think.
Because you can do multiple actions, right?
Like if you have the resources and the settlement.
Okay, so now my turn is over, and now you can go, I think.
I have no idea.
Yes, we got this.
So if I pick a resource card, my turn's over.
Or I start.
Harvest phase.
So you start with picking a card from here, and I pick a card.
And now you can trade or build.
All right.
And also this needs to be with three players minimum,
so I'm already doing it wrong.
So I can put down my settlement hand I wrote already.
I think so.
Yeah.
Am I settled here?
Yeah.
Where do we put our resources?
Do you have a wood?
Is it a good draw?
No.
Now that's the real kicker is playing this Catan music on YouTube.
So our first time playing the card version,
and we're still figuring it out.
I don't think you can play with two players,
but if anyone has been able to figure this out with two players,
please let us know in the comments, because that would be dope.
