I Tried Using the Leatherman Tool Pouch for Leatherman Tools…

I wanted a dedicated Leatherman tool kit that could stay loaded, organized, and ready to grab whenever I needed it.

On paper, the Leatherman Tool Pouch seemed like the obvious answer.

It’s made by Leatherman. It’s literally marketed as a tool pouch. And the entire loadout I wanted to carry consists almost entirely of Leatherman tools and accessories.

So I bought one intending for it to replace the smaller Maxpedition Barnacle I had already been using.

The problem?

The Barnacle still works better.

In this video, I’m revisiting the Leatherman Tool Pouch after actually trying to build a dedicated Leatherman loadout inside it using the Leatherman Surge, Skeletool KBx, bit driver accessories, ratchet, extensions, and bits.

And that raises a pretty simple question:

What Leatherman tools was this pouch actually designed around?

The Surge is one of Leatherman’s larger multitools, yet the internal organization still feels oversized and strangely proportioned for the accessories that go with it. Smaller tools can disappear deep inside the pockets, some components become harder to retrieve than they should be, and the extra internal space doesn’t necessarily translate into better organization.

That becomes even more noticeable when you start carrying the accessories that make the Surge and Leatherman’s other bit-driver-equipped multitools significantly more useful.

Bits.
Ratchet.
Bit driver.
Extensions.
Dedicated knife.
Multitool.

That isn’t an unusual collection of random gear. It’s essentially a complete Leatherman tool system.

Yet putting that system inside the Leatherman Tool Pouch can actually make those tools less convenient to access.

The exterior mounting is another missed opportunity for me. A pouch like this would make an excellent modular tool kit mounted to the outside of a backpack, tool bag, chest rig, MOLLE panel, or other gear system. Instead, the current belt-loop arrangement greatly limits how and where the pouch can be mounted.

That’s ultimately what frustrates me about this product.

I don’t think the Leatherman Tool Pouch is necessarily a bad EDC organizer.

But if the intended purpose is really to be a Leatherman tool pouch, I think the design should make Leatherman’s own tools and accessories exceptionally easy to organize, access, and deploy.

So today we’re putting it next to the Maxpedition Barnacle, loading it with actual Leatherman gear, and asking whether I misunderstood the product…

…or whether Leatherman simply missed the mark.
