Video Summary
AI GeneratedScott from Kentucky Ballistics examines the Tokarev TPS-12, a unique shotgun featuring a \"butt pump\" mechanism where the action is cycled via the stock rather than the fore-end. Through comparative tests and destructive demonstrations, he evaluates its ergonomics, sound, and overall functionality against traditional pump-action shotguns.
Hello? Bob's Big Boomsticks, how can I help you?
Hey, how's it going? Um, I was curious, do you guys got any butt pumps?
Excuse me?
Butt pumps. Do you guys have any butt pumps?
Son, I think you called the wrong store.
This is Bob's Big Boomsticks, right?
Yep.
Okay, then I've called the right place. Do you have any butt pumps?
Is this a prank phone call?
No, I'm serious. I want to make a video with it. Do you have any butt pumps?
Listen, I am not getting involved in any kind of weird videos with butt pumps.
Well, you're just a sorry excuse of a gun shop if you ain't got no butt pumps.
Listen here, son, I don't know who you are, but I'm going to tell you, you need help.
And if I hear you say butt pump one more time, I'm going to come unglued.
Good day, sir. Good...
What's his problem?
All I want is a butt pump shotgun.
Jeez.
What's up, everybody? My name is Scott, and you're watching Kentucky Ballistics.
And today we're going to talk about butt pumps.
But first, let me show you this.
This is a standard 12-gauge shotgun, and it is a pump-action shotgun.
And the way it works is you grab the fore-end, you pump it back,
and then magically a shell appears in the chamber, and then you rack it forward,
and now you're loaded and ready to go.
Now, when you pull the trigger, you have to continuously pump it to make it function.
And it is pumped with the fore-end.
Now, today we have something rather unique.
This is a butt pump shotgun.
Now, the big difference here is I do have a fore-end, but it does not move.
All of the action happens right here in the butt.
So instead of using the fore-end to pump and function your shotgun, all the action is back here.
This is the butt pump.
I mean, you are literally using the stock and the butt of the shotgun to function and chamber rounds,
which is really, really weird.
I have never in my life seen a butt pump shotgun.
This is made by Tokarev, and it's a TPS-12.
I think there are probably some advantages and disadvantages to having a butt pump shotgun,
but I'll tell you this.
I'm excited about pumping this butt, so let's go get set up and get started.
This video is sponsored by Raycon.
There's something about the start of fall that puts me in reset mode.
You know, cleaning out the old, getting organized, building routines that stick.
One thing that has become part of my routine, though, is the Raycon Essential Open Earbuds.
They sit just outside your ear canal, so the sound is amazing,
and you still can hear everything that's happening around you.
Perfect for walks, workouts, or just getting stuff done around the house.
Personally, I think the Essential Open Earbuds are great for when I'm at the gym,
running errands, or working from home.
And they're the ones I reach for over my other earbuds,
because I don't have to give up hearing what's going on around me for great sound.
These feature a multi-point connection, which means I switch between devices with zero hassle.
And 36 hours of battery in the case means I'm barely ever charging them.
The Essential Open Earbuds are the perfect companion for your fall reset.

Now let's get back to it.
Alright, first I just want to compare these two shotguns together.
First up is the standard pump-action 12-gauge shotgun.
This is a Mossberg of pump-action 12-gauge.
Let's just see how quickly I can make it through four rounds.
Here we go.
Do this butter!
Okie dokie, let's see how hard it is to load this thing.
It's pretty smooth.
Not bad.
Alright, the true test.
Let's see how she pumps.
A little bit of a hang-up in my pump there.
I don't...
Probably because it's new, I'm guessing, but a little bit of a hang-up.
A little bit of a hang-up there with the birdshot.
I don't know, maybe it just doesn't like that ammo.
Maybe it prefers high brass.
So if you don't know what I'm talking about, this is low brass and this is high brass.
This is double-aught buck.
So let's see if it likes that better.
Also, this is really weird to function because when you pump it,
your finger is coming off the trigger like this.
And you gotta wait for this to come back before you can pull the trigger.
And you also have to watch out not to get pinched right here.
Alright, now let's see if it likes the high brass better.
Yes, it does indeed like the high brass better.
So I'm going to say that was an ammo problem and not a butt pump problem.
So one thing I want to point out about the butt pump shotgun
that is different than the standard pump that some may consider a feature
is if I load a pump-action shotgun, pretend there's a round in there,
if I want to rack that shell out, it's not going to come out.
It won't allow me to unless I hit the slide release.
Then I can do whatever I want.
Now, with the butt pump shotgun, if I load a round in,
there is no slide release, and if I want to get it out of there,
just do it again.
So once you load a round in, you do not have to pull the trigger
or get a slide release to unload that round if you choose so.
Also, this thing kind of has an automatic load, I guess.
There's like a spring in there, so I don't have to push this forward.
It does that for you, which I think is kind of nifty.
So one advantage I think the butt pump would have over the standard pump
is one-hand manipulation.
For me to load this with one hand, I have to grab the fore-end,
rack it, and then get back to the trigger.
But with the butt pump, in theory, I could just rack it in one motion
and still be by the trigger.
So we're going to try it out and see which one is easier.
First up is the standard shotgun.
I got it, and that kicked really hard.
I've got double-aught buck in this one. I feel like it's going to hurt.
Here we go.
You just got jammed.
We got it in there.
I missed again, though.
Yeah!
I missed again. One more, maybe.
Still missed.
That's actually not bad.
Go back to the standard here.
Oh, yeah!
I nicked it. I think I got one more.
Nope.
My shoulders are tired.
I'm going to say that the butt pump has the advantage
when it comes to one-hand manipulation.
My hand's hurt.
So now I don't have one butt pump.
I've got two butt pumps.
I'm going to try to shoot them both at the same time.
This is going to be difficult. Here we go.
Oh, yeah!
Here we go.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
You just got jammed.
That one didn't go off.
Yeah.
It's doable.
But it's actually pretty difficult.
But there's no way I could do that with two standard pump shotguns.
Now it's hot!
The heat index today is 108 degrees.
So naturally, I thought a good target for today would be dairy products.
Milk was a bad choice.
First up, we have two five-pound containers of sour cream.
And I'm imagining it's probably extra sour today.
We've got two butt pump shotguns loaded up with double hot pot.
Here we go.
You just got jammed.
Shoot!
Oh, I got sour cream on my butt pump.
What in the world?
I missed!
Tell you what, you know, just because you can doesn't mean you should.
Maybe I'll just stick to, like, just the one butt pump today.
Let's go, man!
So like I said, today is 108 degree heat index.
So I thought it would be a good idea to shoot a 10-gallon aquarium filled with 10 gallons of milk.
Milk was a bad choice.
10-gallon fish aquarium of milk versus butt pump shotgun and a 1-ounce 12-gauge slug.
Butt pump.
Wait. There we go.
This should be pretty cool.
I think I hit really low.
Yeah, I wasn't really sure where to aim with that because I've just got a bead.
And I haven't done any accuracy shooting with this.
So I could have aimed in the middle, but I think I hit low.
We'll definitely know in the slow-mo.
So when it comes to this butt pump shotgun, I can't help but wonder what it would be like using it in a close quarters situation.
So now I have the pump action shotgun and the butt pump shotgun, and I'm going to try manipulating it inside this car.
I also have on my metaglasses so you can see what I'm seeing.
So I've got one container of sour cream left, and we're going to start out with the pump action shotgun.
Alright, there's our target.
Well, first of all, this shotgun's way too long.
Okay, alright.
This car don't sound too good.
It's time for the butt pump now.
Okay, now we've got sour cream.
Let's try the butt pump.
I'm missing.
Okay, well, my evaluation of the butt pump shotgun and the standard pump shotgun in a close quarter situation, they're about the same.
Regardless, they're really long and hard to manipulate in here, but they're about the same.
And I was more accurate with the standard pump.
Weird.
Now you know what they say, there ain't nothing like the sound of a pump action 12-gauge shotgun.
That'll just stop them dead in their tracks.
So here's my question.
Is the butt pump just as intimidating as the standard pump?
Let's have a listen.
Okay.
Now for the standard pump.
Butt pump does sound a little intimidating.
It's really hard to hear, though.
Okay, back to the video.
Let's get a little up close and personal.
Here we go.
Standard shotgun.
Okay.
Now the butt pump.
You know, I feel like the butt pump is a little chunkier.
It's got a little more material moving in there.
Here we go again.
Standard.
Now butt pump.
You be the judge, but kind of leaning towards the butt pump.
So it's been quite a while since I've encountered one of these wretched creatures.
I thought I had done a good job at exterminating them, but apparently they've still been reproducing.
This is a Furby.
This is one of the most vile creatures on this earth, and I took a vow a long time ago to exterminate them.
Now if you're ever wondering how to catch one of these things, turns out their favorite food is escargot, a.k.a. snails.
That was my only table for the day, so now I just have a chair.
So I thought it would be kind, and I'd give this Furby a last meal, you know.
Oh, wow.
Look at that.
That is just nasty.
Here you go, little buddy.
Eat up.
I also have some special ammunition for this Furby.
It's called Terminator ammunition.
It's a slug and a bird shot.
Furby is up first.
Oh!
I think that'll do it.
I also believe I hit the chair.
How about these snails?
Oh, wow!
All right.
Well, first of all, if you've ever wondered what the insides of a Furby look like, it looks like that.
There's a snail in there.
You can see it was enjoying those snails that I had given it.
Loves them.
But that Furby is no more.
Thank goodness.
And then that Terminator ammunition is pretty stout.
I mean, we just blew that can to smithereens.
Up next, we got some eggplant, because nobody likes eggplant!
That thing almost got me.
Uh-oh.
Looks like we got a few stragglers.
Unacceptable!
Take my butt pump!
Up next, I'm going to show you how to make my grandmother's world-famous papaya bread.
You'll need ten pounds of flour, one papaya, and a butt pump.
Put this here, and I'll put the papaya on top.
And then I have some very special ammunition to mix this up with.
We have some pit bull rounds.
That is a slug and double-aught buck.
Say bye-bye, papaya!
I'm going to get kind of close for this one.
Okay.
So, we have a little bit of extra flour.
I mean, there was always some left over.
But as you can see here, it got mixed in real good with the papaya.
Now you just kind of want to roll it around, get a little more on there.
And then you just want to stomp it.
And you throw that in the oven, 350 degrees.
Bake until golden brown.
Now we're going to try out a butt pump trick shot.
So, I have a volunteer here.
Unfortunately, Houston Jones would not answer my phone calls today.
So, I found this guy walking down the road, and he said he would do it for $20.
I have two balloons here, and I have a can of shaving cream on the top of his head.
I'm going to shoot both balloons, and then go for the shaving cream can.
And this trick shot is brought to you by SDI.
If you want to get your start in firearms technology, be sure and check them out.
There's a link in the description down below.
Here we go.
Got to be laser focused.
First balloon.
Like nothing.
Second balloon.
Oh, and he looks unscathed.
Let's go for that shaving cream.
Oh.
Okay.
Yikes.
Wait a second.
What was I loaded with?
That's double-aught buck.
Okay.
Probably not the best ammo for a trick shot.
I missed the can and all nine pellets in his face.
You know what?
I think that's probably a good stopping point.
Let me know what you thought about the butt pump shotgun in the comment section down below.
Let me know what you thought about it, and I don't know.
Is that something you would like?
Do you like butt pumps, or do you think you're just going to stick to the standard pump?
