What Scientists Have Found Inside the Cascadia Fault Shocked Everyone

For more than 326 years, one of North America’s most dangerous faults has remained locked beneath the Pacific Northwest.

The Cascadia Subduction Zone stretches roughly 600 miles from northern California past Oregon and Washington toward Vancouver Island. Scientists are now using GPS, offshore seismic imaging, sediment cores and more than 1,500 earthquake sensors to understand where the fault is locked, how strain is building, and what could happen when it ruptures again.
