SEWING NOTES: Heirloom Birthday Bunting 🧵 To make a reusable, lifetime-friendly garland:
Materials: Thrifted cotton fabric, bias tape or sturdy string, iron, fabric scissors. The Process: Cut out 18 fabric triangles (to represent each year of childhood). Use a shape cut out from paper to cut them at the same size. Sew two triangles on the wrong side, keep two of the corners oven (for the ribbon to go through). Turn the triangles through one of the gaps. Add them to a string with a safety pin. Memory Idea: Decorate or embroider one triangle each year with a motif representing your child’s favorite thing or memory at that age.
RECIPE: Dreamy Creamy Apple Pie🥧
Pie Crust : 220 g wheat flour 100 g butter 90 g sugar 1 whole egg + 1 egg yolk 1 pinch of salt
Pie Filling: 4 apples 50 g butter 1 tbsp sugar Fresh lemon juice from approx. 1 juicy lemon
Instructions: Dough: Knead all the dough ingredients together until smooth. Wrap and let it rest in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. Pre-Cook the Apples (The Secret Step): Peel and slice the 4 apples. Place them in a saucepan with the lemon juice. Cook over medium heat until the apples absorb all the lemon juice and get moist. Assemble: Roll out the dough into a pie dish, leaving a bit of excess dough hanging over the edge. Add the cooked apple puree. Add sliced apples on the top Topping: Crumble the 50 g butter together with the 2 tbsp sugar, then sprinkle it evenly over the apples. Bake: Bake at 200°C (390°F) for 35–40 minutes until golden and caramelized. Serve: Enjoy warm with homemade vanilla ice cream
The narrator welcomes the arrival of September and autumn, reflecting on the changing landscape and the passage of time. Through gardening, sewing a meaningful birthday bunting from thrifted fabric, and baking a specialized apple pie, the video emphasizes slowing down and creating lasting memories to make the season magical.
And just like that, September is finally here.
The days are getting shorter, the evenings have gone dark again,
and the grey fog and mist have slowly moved in over the early morning coastline.
The sea is quiet again, and the leaves in the hills are slowly turning yellow.
Autumn is finally here.
A clear sign that we have entered September is also that the apple trees are full of apples again.
And our four apple trees in our garden are perhaps some of the oldest trees that we have on the plot,
and might be as old as the original house, which is 106 years old.
That was at least the guess from a farmer that visited us this spring.
An apple tree that is over 100 years old is rare,
and shows that someone has really taken care of these trees for many decades.
They have definitely weathered a storm, or ten, before we moved in.
One of them is actually hollow, and an owl lives in it.
I really hope to capture the owl on film one day.
But they are shy creatures, so easier said than done.
I love autumn.
It reminds me of starting new chapters in life, and new potential opportunities.
But it also is the season for slowing down,
and wrapping yourself into a blanket in front of a fireplace.
September is also a month for celebrations here,
and I really wanted to make some decorations with some used fabric that I have thrifted,
and that would be able to last a lifetime.
Making decorations that can be used again and again
is a great way to connect memories of past celebrations together with current celebrations.
I ended up sewing bunting in yellow,
a very easy sewing project,
where you just need some fabric, a string, and the ability to sew in straight lines.
The bunting consists of 18 triangle pieces,
representing the 18 birthdays you get as a parent to a child.
I plan to decorate one triangle every year,
representing what they love at that specific age.
In that way, I'm always reminded of how fast life moves,
and how many years of childhood that are left.
I've left some notes of how I did it in the description box below,
if you're interested of making your own.
So
You really know it's autumn when you start wanting to bake pies.
The smell of pumpkin, cinnamon and apple pie
always reminds me of autumn,
and baking an apple pie is the perfect way to kick off this season.
For the last few years,
I've been trying out different ways of baking the perfect apple pie,
and I think I'm approaching my perfect recipe.
The big difference compared to many other apple pie recipes,
is that I cook the apples with lemon before I add them to the pie.
This gives almost a creamy effect to the pie.
If you want to try it out yourself,
then you will find the recipe in the description box below.
As the sun sets, the autumnal evening arrives.
A perfect occasion to enjoy some pie with some homemade vanilla ice cream.
I hope you also have plans for making this autumn magical,
even if it's just adding cinnamon to your warm drink.
Thank you so much for being here.
I'm aiming to get back on track this month with my posting,
so I hope to see you soon again.
In the meantime, take care.
