Oh, you do look tanner that one in that shot and it distorted tell the people what we've been talking about the side-by-side shot again Landry
Will you yeah, that's better. Look how much more tan
Sam looks like she's been on the beach all day
I look like this old man who just barely got out of the hospital and can barely make it into the studio
Oh, but the thing is you're I'd be any more washed out than that
Your hair doesn't look quite as light as it does in person as it does on that
Not you know what? I mean? Well, it could be these lights that they blast down from the headlights
They have coming down from the ceiling
And the gray background too. Let's go back to a dark brunette. What do you say?
I did that for a long time as you all know
I think Mike if you guys have ever seen father of the bride to with Steve Martin and he decides to surprise his wife and
Dye his hair darker again. I think you could rock it. I think I think my wife would probably be okay with it
I stopped coloring it during kovat as I've told you many times and Ruth said, you know
You're gonna be surprised how great it is. I mean, it's not gonna be that much different and we were working from home then
So the lighting wasn't as harsh as it is in the studio, but you're someone who looks good with your hair like this, too
I'm not discounting that you look great all the time. I'm just saying if there was any part of you
No, I'm serious, I think if there was any part of you that decided to dye your hair, I think that's fine
Maybe that should be a pole. I just don't want it to look fakie
You know what? I mean, you don't want it at all because toward the end when I was coloring it or the end
Near the end of my hair coloring experience, I just had a few bad and I always had it done professionally
I didn't do it myself, but maybe you need to see my girl
Maybe
Fish that could be a viewer pole. How much of your natural hair color are we seeing right now?
My hair is slightly darker right now
I wanted to go a little darker than what my natural is, but the Sun lightened it up a little bit as well. So
One fact about me if I could just bring it back to me for a second
The only hair I gotta be careful how I say this on my body. That is still the color that it was
Color what is in my upper lip you said that so and I can't really grow a good beard
I could probably grow a decent mustache, but it would be dark brown or almost black looking it would look fake
But for some reason the hair on my upper lip you should do it in November for like the no shave November thing
I'm kind of fun. I would hey, we've got Brady speaking of got
This guy never ages. It's incredible. Great James. Yeah was in with us and and
We'll hear from him coming up the former cowboy talking Cowboys Rich Phillips called the SMU game last night a crazy night
What a strange night power outage that game was was delayed and we'll get Rich's thoughts on what it was like to be a part
Of that start off with Jerry Jones on the fan today. He talks on the radio on Tuesdays
We talked about it on Tuesday nights. And today Jerry was talking about the possibility of some trade still being in the works Jerry
Timing-wise right on something this morning or this week
But if you looked at it, generally speaking, we're in play and that's the best way to describe it
What area of the team would you like to improve most on?
Again, that's obvious
you
can look and see that
Defensively and that's as deep as I'm gonna go here and I know it's too broad for this answer
But I'm gonna make it anyway
You could look for it to be defensive
So still talking about maybe adding some depth to a defense which has been drastically changed already
Cowboys, I think have
Six, what do you say six new starters on defense or guys who weren't here last year at this time? Anyway
Who will be starting on on this defense? Jerry is a genius in that
He knows going in to these radio interviews or any sort of interview that he does that if you can just kind of throw a
Nugget out there people are gonna run with it and the nugget today was the possibility that maybe the Cowboys are still gonna make
More moves. Well, of course, they're gonna entertain it, right?
Why wouldn't they freed up whatever 17 19 million dollars in cap space?
I mean, I think if there was ever going to be a year that Jerry did decide to make another move
It's this year because that's all we've been talking about how the drought gone on way too long now
That he's getting not getting any younger by any means
So they've already moved differently in the offseason and preseason and all that
So I actually do think that there's a really good possibility that they're not done and they can make another big move
Before the trade deadline, what would it be? I mean, is it some way they still get Max Crosby?
Yeah, you know Joey Bosa's out. There's a free agent. Does that intrigue them?
Maybe another kind of big name like that. It'd be sort of a von Miller type signing but
You look at the at the new
Names new faces new guys on that defense and von Miller and Rashaan Gary. They drafted Lawrence and
Caleb downs, of course
D winners Kobe Durant Jalen Thompson on and on it goes
For fans, it's gonna take some getting used to once the real game started
With that whole thing, but yeah the the cap room you mentioned
They restructured the those contracts of Kenny Clark to Ron Bland and Jake Ferguson to open up
19 million and that was kind of like oh, well, maybe maybe they are gonna actually do something this season
But yeah, Jerry's a master at creating even more storylines heading into week one against the Giants
But as you said, he's at the point in his life and his career right now where I think he
You wouldn't blame him for not being as patient as he once was in terms of making moves that he think can pay off right?
away
Our poll question tonight
What should the Cowboys do with that cap room make a major trade on defense?
Use it to just kind of fill in the gaps roll it over to next year or sign pickens long-term
That's the most popular option right now Fox4news.com slash free-for-all or scan the QR code
All right
Let's talk about this SMU game last night
Mustangs went on the road and beat Florida State the game was delayed nearly two hours the start
Because of a power outage the lights eventually came back on mostly anyway
But there was no scoreboard for most of the game
No clock displayed
Anyway, no press box to field communication and really changed the way the coaches had to communicate with their quarterbacks
And it affected the broadcasters including Rich Phillips and Scott Garner calling the game on the ticket
Here's the late field goal that won it for the Mustangs called by Rich
And Nick Reed last year's FCS All-American kicker from New Hampshire is on for a 20-yard field goal to try to take the lead
against Florida State
snap-back hold-down kick on the way and it is good and SMU takes the lead
27-24 with 21 seconds to play
To welcome in Rich Phillips the radio voice of the SMU Mustangs you hear him on the ticket
You heard him last night that wild wind opened the season at Florida State
Of course rich the headline before the game even started the fact that the power went out right before the 635 scheduled start time
Describe the scene at that moment from where you were sitting
so we had just finished the coin toss and
Literally the clock was on
440 remaining on the countdown clock for pregame and everything went dark and we went off the air because we lost all power we lost
internet and we didn't know for sure what was going on at that point and
We finally got on on a battery backup
But we could see pretty quick the game wasn't starting anytime soon because they didn't get the lights on for at least
45 minutes after that and that was only half the lights that came on
So we we really didn't know if we were gonna play at one point last night
Rich obviously when you're up in the booth calling games
You're used to having a lot of things accessible to you at one time in terms of what you're looking at in terms of what?
You're hearing so for our viewers out there. How did this affect your broadcast last night?
Well, I had binoculars in this hand and I had a phone in this hand
And after the play I would hand the phone over here to Scott Garner for his analysis of the play and then come back
getting a workout
yes, and
You know
I keep a lot of notes on my iPad and I didn't have time to pull anything up because my hands are full and I've got
My spotting boards printed out and the only thing I can read is the player names that I do large
I couldn't read any stats because we didn't have this thing called lights in the radio booth. We had no power
There'd be no lights. No air conditioning
No sideline guy nothing. It was but for a while to the first half of the game. We didn't have a clock
They only had the score on the scoreboard. No down distance. No clock
they started to get that going in the second half finally and
ESPN.com we had stats from at one point finally, but it was flying blind for surely that whole first half
Yeah, I turned you on on the way home last night and and I could tell immediately
What the situation was you guys did a great job, but it brought back for me memories of me doing small market radio
Calling a girl softball game from somebody's living room across the street from the ballpark because you know
We've lost power or whatever real quick rich. How wise do you think was it to play the game?
I mean was it irresponsible in any way to actually play the game last night?
I think it was the best choice because I think the next choice was going to be to play it this afternoon Tuesday afternoon and
When I was told that my Brett Lashley told us that when we got back to the airport early this morning
And I was like where we're gonna spend the night because we already checked out of the hotel because it fly home right after the game
so
The only other option that we were considering at least on the radio side was maybe that we get rid of our game this
Weekend and go back out there to Florida State because Florida State had a bye weekend
But I think they made the right choice
It was a long wait hour and 40 minutes to get there
but it was the right choice I think to get it done and I'm sure a
TV network had something to do with
Rich we know who rules it here. Well, you know, I'm just saying
Rich SMU's offense was impressive. There were a lot of turnovers in that one, but Kevin Jennings
He ended with the career night. Just was what was your biggest takeaway?
from their performance last night, I
Think we felt really good about it because unlike the Florida State that was game two for them
It was game one for SMU and we didn't see a whole lot of the the real mental lapses
You see a lot of times in that first game. I felt like they were pretty clean there
Definitely Jennings needs to cut down had the two interceptions one was definitely not a really good throw on his part
But 430 yards and three touchdowns a couple of big ones a 50 yarder and a 79 yarder is hard to argue with
looks like they got a pretty good tight end with Randy Pittman who was by the way at Florida State last year and
The defense, you know needed to be better
They gave up a ton of passing yards last year and they didn't give him hardly any passing to Ashton Daniels in Florida State last
Night. All right, Rich. We'll let you go, but we're burying the lead. You're in Denver in a hotel room right now
We're recording this because you've got music to go enjoy tonight. Are you seeing a Red Rocks?
Going to Red Rocks seeing five for your death punch. Come on, Mike. Let's get here
I've seen him a dozen times. You're gonna love it. You really you really are and
Enjoy yourself get a little rest before the concert. Thanks for it. Thanks, Rich. All right. Thanks guys
Hope bridges enjoying the show tonight
we
We enjoyed having former Cowboy Brady James in our studio and that's coming up
All right, it's great to have former Cowboy Brady James back with us here on free-for-all Brady welcome
How's the summer been for you? It's been extremely hot. I know you got I know
You're excited because college football is going again, you're an LSU guy. Yeah got Lane Kiffin now. Yeah controversial
Program going. Yeah. Yeah, you're just you're seeing all sunshine and roses in Baton Rouge, right?
Oh, absolutely, especially after the win. I mean when you throw up 51 points in the
NCAA it's tough to do so I think winning cures all however
You never know when the next headline is coming because it's coming with Lane Kiffin. Yeah
Why should the fans buy into the hype that's surrounding the Cowboys this season? Do you think you know?
That's a great question Sam. I think buying into the hype is just a part of the Cowboys nation
However
This is the I've been to practice the legends they practice
Three straight years last year was a little bit different. We got a chance to see and meet
Schottenheimer and so we've known him out. I mean he's been an offensive coordinator in the league for a long time
But him at the helm we hadn't heard him speak before
He brought us in and ingratiated us and we got a chance to see behind the curtain and it was great
however, it was
the the players I would say the personnel was totally it was different too and so
You leave you left there last year because Ibra floos was my actual position coach my last year here
And so, of course, we had rapport. I understood what they were thinking when they brought him in
We all we all know the challenges that he faced and all the things that he didn't do as well as he needed to
However, this year was totally different when we stepped on the field for Legends Day I was out there I was on the field
I could not believe some of the
Personnel moves that were made if we I'm sure we're going into the Michael Parsons trade at some point
When you look at the return on investment from what we have just by eyes optics optics
It was incredible to see a defense
And the way that they were I would say
Engaging each other like high-fiving each other pushing each other a guy like Vaughn Miller would not show up
to a
Empty gun. I would say he would show up knowing his position in his role
And another thing that was very I would say encouraging was the defensive line coaches the defensive line coaches this year
I mean they were out there actually coaching and not just coaching like I've been around for a while and
You hear you hear words. They were actually doing things that were applicable to
What they were teaching at that moment and when I saw that I was like, wow, this is a whole different
Defensive like front and if you look at that defensive front, I mean you got some scary guys on there
I had no idea how big Rashad Gary was I mean
That guy was like who you want in the bar fight, you know
On your side on your side. Yeah, Sam and I have talked about the Micah trade a lot obviously
And I still would not have done the deal
I just don't think you trade a player like that away with that said I hear you saying
It's easy to think that maybe it makes a little more sense looking at it a year later
I would say it makes more sense when we see the production
So the wait-and-see still those still wait and see yes
It's some it's some good pieces, but you have to play the game and once the games are being played
We'll we'll be able to assess and measure
What that looks like?
Michael Parsons is a generational player
however, if you go out and Quentin Williams and Kenny Clark Rashard Gary
Vaughn Miller the young guys that we have
man, it's
Collectively, I think it's it's that juice is worth squeeze
You talk about the defense. Obviously, they have a young defensive coordinator and Christian Parker
How quickly do you expect this defense to?
Assume its identity in terms of the schedule like how long do you think that that's going to take? I think I
Was very impressed with the preseason game to be honest with you, I don't recall the Cowboys winning
Too many preseason games in the last decade and so for them to come out
The way that they played and the way that they just played together
It was a great sign now Christian Parker. I'll be honest with you
he's coming from the enemy, you know, and so just talking to him or having the
Having the access to communicate with him we hadn't had it he was really on the field coaching his guys
And I appreciated that because I think they respect him
When I was at the Legends Day and you know
We get a chance to go on the field and some guys go all the time, you know
Some guys show up, you know, you'll see Charles Haley with his dirty shirt on or something like that
However, just seeing those guys and seeing how they were interacting I got a chance to talk to over Sean which I
Hadn't talked to him in a while, but just being
Close to him and engaging him. His whole conversation is totally different from a year ago. Yeah. Oh, yeah a whole year ago
I mean he was over there with Britt Brown doing a lot of stretching and making sure that he was he was healthy
this year he is
Getting guys lined up. He's assumed
a leadership role
But guys are listening
I mean when you have the defensive front that you have like you that that we have right now on paper with Kenny Clark
Quentin Williams, I mean we've been watching
Quinn Williams since Alabama. I mean so I would say this you have to
Demand respect and command respect against guys like that. And those are some of the things
Talking to over shown and making sure you having a green dot it sounds good
It's not a sexy
It's not a sexy position to have because you have to galvanize you have to get everybody out of a chaotic situation
in less than 20 seconds
Because that's how quick the calls are coming in especially and that's maybe if they're not going to minute or hurry up offense
So just seeing his reaction and seeing the way that he was communicating
And how he's communicated and played during camp
It's a reason to be excited
Especially for Cowboys nation on the defensive side of ball just to change the subject a little bit here
You played pretty much your entire career with Tony Romo
We know that number nine is going through some tough times right now
I wonder if you had any words of encouragement for your friend. Absolutely. I think when we
See a situation like that happen
You you always wonder why and
The game has been great for a lot of us
however, it's some residual things that come along with it if you play for a long time and
Him being able to pin the letter talking about his pain and him being able to self medicate
It's not a popular thing. However, it's multiple people that do that
Throughout their life and you don't have to be a former professional athlete to go through that that pain
So I thought it was good
Him being able to number one address it, but also talk about his vulnerability in that moment
So nothing, but well wishes and God bless
Tony Romo
Brady James good to see you. You've got that fountain of youth somewhere
You keep that at your house or get the brother place
Change since your rookie year
H2o guys
Yeah
Brady James our guests here at free-for-all. Thank you, sir. All right
All right, we're back to wrap it up on free-for-all plus
Viewers want to see more from you. You know what I'm saying?
I think
Mike just shared with me a fun little video that he wondered if he should post and I just
Chronicling his day and I think it's a good idea. Would you guys like to see more of juice cuz I would
you're mocking me number one number two, you know, I
Kind of poke fun sometimes that people who keep track of everything they do during the day
There's no way I can do that and post it. So I just did a little sort of tongue-in-cheek
Maybe I'll post it. Maybe I'll post it later on. Please do do you do tick-tock videos?
We talked about that you won't you look at tick-tock a lot, right you post stuff on tick-tock
It's usually content it's it's usually not me it's you no, no, no, it's usually just not my face
It's really like I'm capturing
No
What are you saying you want to see more of my face on tick-tock, you know
I just I don't know why tick-tock just came to my mind. I just haven't that is a goal of mine more
I have not dived into that world instant and Facebook and edX pretty much
You want to close with the poll real quick here? Yeah, here we go
What should the Cowboys do with that cap room? You can vote. We're back at 1030. See that
