This is the ultimate Transfăgărășan Highway road trip, driving one of the most famous and spectacular roads in Europe deep into Romania’s Carpathian Mountains. We’re climbing through ancient forests, snow-capped peaks, dramatic mountain passes, and some of the wildest landscapes in Transylvania, with the chance to see brown bears right along the way.

But this adventure is also about the food. I’m stopping in mountain villages to try traditional Romanian specialties like mici, pork knuckle, local cheeses, chocolate fudge, and even bear salami while learning how people have lived and eaten in these mountains for generations. We’re also exploring Romania’s famous ice hotels and discovering a completely different side of the country far from the big cities.

This is more than a road trip.
