Video Summary
AI GeneratedA fatal vehicle crash occurred on the northbound 405 freeway at Sunset Boulevard in the Brentwood area (Sepulveda Pass) around 2:50 PM on Labor Day. The accident caused massive debris across the freeway and led to a full shutdown of the northbound lanes, creating severe traffic congestion during one of the busiest travel windows of the holiday.
Live pictures right now from Skybox.
And this is a fatal crash on the Sepulveda Pass, ultimately you can call this the Brentwood
area.
You see Hotel Angelino there.
This is in the northbound direction.
A fatal crash happened about 2.50 this afternoon.
And you know what that's going to do for the Labor Day drive home.
It is already having an incredible impact.
Deadly fatal crash.
That was very redundant, but you get the point.
This just came in.
Let's see, let me just get you the latest information.
This is right there at Sunset Boulevard.
That's why you're able to see the Hotel Angelino for those of us local and know where this
is specifically.
West Sunset Boulevard, detailed information expected to last for at least two hours.
So that can really impact any sort of travel on the 405.
We know it's one of the busiest, if not the busiest freeway in the nation, certainly in
Los Angeles.
So you can just see that wide, that massive debris field and the response from the black
and white there.
This happened again at 2.50, so we're approaching the four o'clock hour.
It's been some time.
Had some of the cleanup has happened and there is the closure to those two left lanes.
Traffic is scooting on by on those three lanes northbound.
Again, this is, you're just hopping on Fox Local Los Angeles as we approach the four
o'clock hour.
This is a deadly crash northbound 405 at Sunset Boulevard, technically in Brentwood, and we're
seeing the impact to the Labor Day Drive.
Sky Fox with these live pictures right now.
No word yet on what happened.
How many vehicles involved, who died, all of that still needs to be worked out.
And our team here inside the newsroom is working to get that information to you.
So just as soon as that happens, I will bring that to you.
But just, hey, heads up, if you know somebody who's heading home or if you had plans to
travel on the 405 on this Labor Day afternoon into evening, you're going to want to find
an alternate route.
I'm sure Sepulveda Pass or Sepulveda Boulevard is very busy.
People are already going to be taking to that as we just are noticing our friends from Live
Now from Fox is joining our coverage.
So those viewers, we thank you so much for watching.
This is a deadly crash on the very popular, very busy 405 freeway in Brentwood.
This is just near Santa Monica and then also over the hill would be Sherman Oaks.
Just for reference, this is the famed Sepulveda Pass.
CHP is on scene, multiple units on scene.
No word yet on how many vehicles are involved.
No word yet on who died.
If it was just a solo vehicle, because you're seeing the remnants, the debris field is vast.
And that one vehicle is quite smashed up against the divider, the center divider there.
There is lanes that are still open.
I'm not seeing any traffic, though, scoot by, which we were just seeing a whole bunch
of traffic heading northbound in this live picture.
But that has stopped.
So I'm wondering if they have done a traffic break and they have shut the entire 405 down
while they clear this up.
So I'm going to work to get some more information on that.
Let me bring on my producer, Seth, here and see if you've been able to learn that.
If you haven't noticed, Seth, and Seth Goldman is joining the coverage now.
There were vehicles that were just making their way through the three lanes that did
remain open.
Suddenly that travel stopped.
So I'm curious if you've heard if they are, in fact, doing a traffic break and they're
shutting down northbound 405 altogether.
All right.
Very good.
All right.
Seth Goldman, producer here on Fox Local.
And we thank him as we're now able to have a wider shot and it certainly leads me to
believe since there are no travelers here northbound 405 that they have, in fact, shut
it down.
And yeah, exactly right.
There is that traffic break.
As we're now zooming in just to get a better look, looks like a motorcycle is off a cyclist
off to the side.
Unclear what that has to do with anything, but the backup is going to be brutal on any
given day, let alone on Labor Day here in Los Angeles.
As we're now seeing all those empty lanes, you never want to see that on the 405.
And obviously this is a tragic story that we hate to have to report on.
It is known to be one of the busiest travel days.
We just, in fact, had a spokesperson from AAA join us to talk about now is the worst
time to travel.
Anytime after 2 p.m. on Labor Day is the worst time to travel.
And unfortunately, this has happened.
You see that one vehicle there took a direct hit, perhaps unclear, again, how many vehicles
were involved.
But the remnants of that vehicle just speaks volumes on the impact.
And if you're cruising along at the speed limit, you're going very fast on the 405.
And we know that people tend to drive even above the speed limit.
So that's pure speculation.
No word on if speed played a factor, if distracted driving played a factor.
No word just yet on the cause or even how many vehicles were involved.
But that is just a nasty sight there.
So it looks like Northbound 405 is shut down right now.
This is at Sunset Boulevard, technically in the Brentwood area on the Sepulveda Pass.
How long will all those lanes be shut down?
Unclear.
When we brought this to you first, it was open.
At least three lanes of the 405 were opened.
And now all of them have been shut down.
As we're seeing CHP officers obviously gather evidence.
They're working this.
This investigation continues.
This deadly crash on the 405 along the Sepulveda Pass on this Labor Day holiday.
All right, we're going to step away for just a quick two-minute break here at the top of
the hour.
It's just a couple minutes past four o'clock as we continue to watch this.
And we're also watching for the L.A. Rams presser to begin.
That's in Woodland Hills.
And our Julio Duran is behind the camera.
Aaron Donald is expected to speak.
We know that he just announced he is coming out of retirement.
So a press conference for the Los Angeles Rams.
And now as we have a broader picture here, I'm going to stay with this because we can
just see that backup that is building on the 405 in Brentwood.
What a shot that is.
And even on the on-ramp, I just feel for everybody involved.
And if you're looking on the left-hand side, that is Sepulveda Boulevard, which would be
a good alternate route.
And as expected, that in itself is jammed up.
So people hearing about this crash and then doing what they can to get off the 405 before
they get stuck in it.
So Sepulveda Boulevard is also going to be very, very busy.
