Fox News. Robin Murdoch live this morning checking out the event and Robin on top of celebrating
Michigan's workforce this rally in March. They're trying to accomplish some other things too, right?
Good morning. Yeah, they're talking about voting rights. There's going to be a big rally at the
end of this where they're supposed to talk about voting rights as well as defending a democracy. So
a very timely topic given the election that is going on right now. And I got to tell you what
a difference a couple of hours makes when we are out here at five o'clock this morning. Very,
very quiet. I mean look at it now. You've got lots of motorcycles right there. You actually got a
dog on the back of a motorcycle over here. Don't see that very often and all of the various union
groups are now gathering. I'm going to bring in Martez. Martez is with Local 51, UAW Local 51.
I know you've been coming down here to the parade for you know probably a dozen or so years.
Looks like you got some good weather today, right? Yes, it's some great weather and we're
enjoying it over here today. Thank you. Yes, I imagine over those 12 years you've seen
every bit of weather. You know lots of rain, things like that. Yes, we definitely had some
rain. We had some sunshine and all that good stuff. But today is a beautiful day, not a cloud
in the sky. And it doesn't matter what the weather is though, right? This is about bringing unions
together for what has become a Labor Day tradition, right? Yes, it definitely is. I'm a third generation
myself and my family, we always attend this parade because there's so much pride and
and worth in this parade for the people. And it actually shows the city that we're here, you know.
What do you think is the message that the unions want to send by coming out here and marching down
Michigan Avenue? Obviously this is an event that attracts tens of thousands of people
every single year. What is the end goal here? The biggest thing is to show pride,
awareness, and that we are here. The union is united and it's about the people. Honestly,
I tell my folks, I say, hey, the union is in you. It's got to be in you because at the end of the day
we have a rich history, we have a strong backing, and we are here to stay. And it's about the pride
of the people. That's the biggest thing I notice it is. And that proud is so evident when you get
out here today. I'm going to bring in Lily now, who is also with Local 51, UAW Local 51. You have
been coming down to the parade for four or so years. Three or four years. What does it mean
to you to be out here, to be amongst all of this membership and just the pure numbers out here?
Just showing just real true solidarity, networking with a lot of union workers, the support.
What type of feeling does it give you when you look around? I mean, people are walking down
Michigan Avenue. It's quiet out there now, pretty bare. But I mean, there are just crowds
of people that are all walking together with a common goal. How does that make you feel?
Unified, solidarity, powerful, connected. That's how I feel.
And how important are unions right now?
They are very important because they support people with safety, working conditions,
and just showing unity, solidarity. That's all I can say, really solidarity for life.
Solidarity. And the biggest thing is that we unify. The biggest thing about it is this pride
of the people. It's showing that we are hard workers, we're strong, we're united,
and we're not going to be stopped. The union is going to be around forever.
Wonderful. Well, thank you two for coming out here this morning, talking to us.
I know you weren't very excited, Lily, but I appreciate it.
Cortez, you did a great job. We're going to stay out here to continue
watching the events unfold out here. The parade will kick off down Michigan Avenue
at nine o'clock this morning. It will eventually end about a mile down the road
at Roosevelt Park, where there is going to be a huge rally and a bunch of speakers. Very,
very exciting time here in Detroit, here in Corktown. And we are, of course,
going to bring it to you live. We are live here in Corktown. I'm Robin Murdoch, Fox 2 News.
