Right now at six on the plus police have arrested a man after a 16 year old girl was shot in
downtown Manassas. What investigators say happened as they search for more potential suspects.
Plus thousands are still without power tonight after those powerful storms ripped through the
area Thursday where Pepco says it stands on getting your power back on and debris off of
your streets. And today the United States launched strikes at three Iranian oil tankers. The reason
the military says it attacked and the potential consequences. An expert will join us to break it
all down. Fox 5 News at six starts right now. But first to a news alert here at six a family
friendly event in downtown Manassas turned deadly after police say two people exchanged gunfire
killing an innocent 16 year old bystander. Now tonight police have arrested one of the suspected
shooters but say they are still searching for a second gunman. Fox 5's Regina Irita is live now
Regina. Yeah well Sydney just right behind me you can actually see there is a vigil growing.
These are people who came by to show their support to the family members who lost a 16 year old
daughter. Now I can tell you these are family members as well as well as neighbors. But that
is that growing vigil there placed where she was shot and killed. This was an innocent bystander.
The 16 year old girl she was walking with her friends when she was caught in this crossfire.
Now right here towards this direction towards my direction this is where two suspects
were exchanging gunfire. One of the stray bullets hit her and killed her in that direction. Tonight
authorities say they have one suspect in custody but they are searching for another gunman.
It's different anytime we have a convicted felon with guns in a shootout at a public event
that's a threat to my community. I get pretty passionate about that. We're going to dig deeper
and find out how is that possible. How is he out as a convicted felon? How does he have a firearm
and why is he here in the community as well? Again this happened Friday night just before 9 30.
Police say the 16 year old girl was shot and killed and a 21 year old man was also injured.
He was taken to the hospital but tonight we're learning more about that man. Police identify him
as Tasheen Douglas of Prince William County and say they now believe he was one of the shooters.
The chief says Douglas has been arrested and charged with a second degree murder but police
are still looking for a second shooter. So far they have not released a description.
Investigators say the shooting started with Douglas and that second suspect exchanging gunfire.
That's when the 16 year old girl an innocent teenager was hit by a stray bullet. Police say
At some point Douglas was also shot and collapsed. When officers arrived they found him on the ground
and initially believed he was a victim but witnesses and information from the community
helped detectives piece together what happened and later identified Douglas as a primary suspect.
Now police have not released the 16 year old victim's name. They have confirmed
they recovered a weapon but they're still looking for that second shooter and the weapon
used by that person. But back out here live you've still seen how that vigil is growing.
Family members, neighbors as well as community members. Now Sydney police are now asking anyone
who witnessed the shooting or may have video from that area to come forward. That motive is still
under investigation. In the next half hour we'll try to talk to some of the neighbors or family
members if they're willing to. We also spoke with some other community members and we'll try to get
that sound for you in the next half hour. Back to you. Terrible story Regina we will see you then.
Thank you. Now to some more top stories tonight. 10 people including some children were hospitalized
today after a carbon monoxide leak at a Gaithersburg apartment complex. Fire officials say it happened
at Streamside Apartments that's on North Summit Avenue. It happened before nine this morning.
Crews there found high carbon monoxide readings at the building and elevated readings at the
neighboring apartment building. A total of 51 residents were checked. No word on what caused
that buildup or when residents might be allowed back home. A piece of the ceiling at the Kennedy
Center crumbled to the floor yesterday. Take a look at this. Kennedy Center leaders shut down
the main building after it happened. They say for safety purposes. Officials say it's supposed to
reopen today but the grand foyer will remain closed through the weekend. This comes amid
a legal battle over restoration projects there that continues to play out in court.
Pepco says thousands of people across D.C. and Maryland remain without power following severe
storms. This morning the company said it has restored about 90 percent of the roughly 76,000
customers impacted by Thursday night storms. Crews are working now to remove trees from power lines
still repair damages and replace snapped poles. Pepco says about three to four hundred crew members
are getting that work done. Our efforts at this point in time really when you think about the
priority of our restoration efforts we typically will focus on hospitals first. We're always about
safety at Pepco. Hospitals first, nursing homes next and then we start to focus on large groups
of communities and customers that are out. All right still work to be done. We know most of those
outages are in D.C. and Prince George's County. All right let's move now to a first check on your
forecast today. Taking a look now live look all across our region. Lots of sunshine today in those
warmer temperatures. They are sticking around for the Labor Day weekend. Meteorologist Cesar
Cornejo now joining us here and I know the good news is it's not going to be as humid which is
something a lot of us especially thanks for our hair we've been waiting for the humidity to
tamper down. I know and it couldn't have come at a better time either. You know the long holiday
weekend Sydney it's just it's already going into full force and you know what we couldn't have
asked for better weather. Let's talk exactly about what we have going on here right. Well we got to
see some of these temperatures mostly hanging around the mid-80s. Look at that 85 degrees
in D.C. is what we saw as a high for today. 81 in Dulles, 83 in Baltimore. Yesterday temperatures
were close to 90 if not down right at 90 degrees. Dulles, Virginia I think was the warmest at 91.
That's a 10 degree temperature change so certainly much nicer out there. We continue to see a lot of
nice clear skies so far. So looking here from the National Harbor over top of the Capitol wheel
again looking very nice and tranquil and that really becomes the main theme for the rest of
today. Places a little further in towards parts of Virginia could still see a few rain showers but
for the most part you could see yes a little bit of cloud cover but look at that temperatures still
hanging around 81 degrees at D.C.A. Dulles 78 and BWI at 81 and even though it does feel about
a degree or two warmer thanks to that humidity that continues to drop. So as we head in towards
Sunday and Monday this is going to really help us out here. So as we head in towards the rest of
tonight expect to see clearing skies temperatures also slowly dropping back down towards those low
to mid 70s and by the time we wake up for Sunday morning well we could have temperatures mostly
hanging around parts of the 60s but expect a much nicer weekend here where we have weather
that will not only be in the low to mid 80s but again as we've been mentioning way less humidity
so we get to at least enjoy being outside especially there on Labor Day. Sydney. All
right Cesar thank you. Well both Gas Buddy and AAA are predicting this Labor Day will set a new gas
price record and not the good kind. Prices are skyrocketing across the country ahead of the
holiday weekend and Americans are not happy at the pump. The average price now rests around four
dollars per gallon. It is a bitter pill for a lot of American families hoping to travel for Labor
Day weekend. Before the Iran war started things were under three dollars now it's 420 in D.C. 414
nationwide and for truckers it's even worse. Diesel fuel set an all-time record at 585 a
gallon and those big trucks will use 200 gallons of gas so that's big money. That it is. If you
have to get gas around the DMV this weekend your best bet that's going to be Virginia where there
is a lower state tax on gas. Just keep that in mind. The Washington commanders are prepping for
a new chapter their return to D.C. before leaving the district. RFK Stadium was the heart of sports
and entertainment in the nation's capital. Our Chad Ricardo was out at a tailgate in northeast
with that legacy the team is looking to now reclaim. Yeah and I tell you guys what an absolutely
amazing event going down here in Washington D.C. at the fields at RFK campus this
RFK legacy a tailgate experience. Let's take a look. What a day it was to be a fan of the
Washington football team as hundreds of individuals many of which rocking their
burgundy and gold came here to the former site of RFK to celebrate the history and relive the
memories of what this stadium meant to the people. Some of my favorite memories are like they're like
family memories. My dad taking me to a Monday night against the Cowboys at RFK. It's raining
the stadium is literally wobbling. I remember that like I was a little boy. Well I think this is one
of the very few things that could bring an entire city together. Whenever the Redskins were playing
whether you were democrat, republican, black, white, whatever you all came together and for those three
hours you cheered for the Redskins or the commanders or whatever you want to call them.
There were bands of fans and community members jammed men and even gospel choirs let the church
say amen and in addition to those who supported the team some of the famed Washington football
legends themselves came out to share their memories of old RFK. We was always sold out for once
and you know I'm just disappointed that a lot of the fans that wanted to come
couldn't make it because it was always sold out but it was just just the atmosphere inside the stadium
and outside the stadium man it just brought a lot of joy. We were the best the RFK fans,
Redskins fans was sensational. And in speaking with those in attendance Fox 5 was told that
they look forward to the new stadium that will be built in Washington DC circuit day 2030
but that they will always hold the old RFK near and dear to their hearts. This team those colors
that stadium bigger than football itself no it was an experience that is ingrained in the hearts
and minds of those who love RFK. It rocked I mean when you were sitting in the seats it would rock.
You could tell how they showed out that stadium every single game we did not have
a non-sold out game and then when we let people outside the stadium who unfortunately didn't have
a ticket to come in we still had another 30 to pull field advantage. We had a home stadium advantage
and from the moment you got in the parking lot you just feel it and we won for them.
They were there day and night for us. It was a family affair and the greatest moments in my
football life took place at RFK. That's going to do it from the fields at RFK as we have celebrated
the former stadium up with the RFK legacy a tailgate experience. Back to you. So much to
look forward to indeed. All right so to come at six tonight the Trump administration just launched
new video games tied to the president's political agenda. Why experts say that might cause some
problems. Plus a temporary ceasefire as U.S. envoys push to restart peace talks. We have the
very latest on the war between Russia and Ukraine right after this quick break.
