Welcome to Good Night LA. I'm Christine Divine. We're talking about dangerous conditions expected
at Southern California beaches this Labor Day weekend with Hurricane Marie bringing large waves,
rip currents and potential flooding. Officials are preparing for the expected crowds and urging
beachgoers to really stay cautious. We have team coverage for you. Reporter Laura Diaz standing by
in Laguna Beach. We first begin though with meteorologist Star Harvey. Star. Yes, Christina.
We will get to those alerts for you. They do include that coastal flood advisory but also
that high surf as well. I can tell you tonight we are in the clear of alerts. Those alerts do become
active as we push into tomorrow and we'll stretch through the early parts of next week. As of right
now temperatures in Burbank 71 degrees, Santa Monica at 68. Down that coast we'll see temperatures
in Long Beach but also Huntington Beach coming in in the lower 70s. Pushing east 72 in Ontario and
up in Victorville temperatures at 70 degrees. Our winds moving at about 5 to 10 miles per hour across
the region currently and our temperatures tonight for those lows dipping down into the 50s will also
have the return of a few low to mid 60s as well. Here's a look at our temperatures for tomorrow
shooting for the 70s. We'll have a few 80s as well and a few 90s popping out across the area
through our Saturday. Also we're hitting for 87 degrees for the LA area tomorrow expected to be
under mostly dry conditions. Some sunshine but then we arrive at Sunday. This is when we're
expecting to see that rain potential from Hurricane Marie. Widespread showers mostly
between our overnight hours the 4 a.m to the 2 p.m hour. When I get back we'll be talking high
surf advisory but also coastal flood advisory. All that plus your seven day coming up. For now
Christine back to you. More about Hurricane Marie and the effects of a tropical storm in the pacific
could doom people's homes. There's not much they can do. Fox 11's Laura Diaz reports from Laguna
Beach. It's going to be a long night for people who live in the seaside community in Laguna Beach
not knowing exactly how bad the storm will be. They're all doing their best to keep a stiff
upper lip. I see you're starting to cry. Yeah no it's um it's it's it's actually um very emotional.
I think I'm kind of in this phase of like a denial. I look at it I can see it I know it's happening
but I don't want to accept it. This woman whose family has owned a home on Ocean Way in Laguna
Beach for decades gets emotional when she thinks about the uncertainty of whether their home can
survive nature's power. For days the high surf has relentlessly pounded the seawall
by their home. At the same time the beach is shrinking. She doesn't wish to be identified
but says a warning this weekend of heavy swells coming into the area has her on edge. This isn't
even the highest swell. This is not even high tide yet. This is not high tide yet. This is not the
highest the swell we'll get this weekend so it's it's going to keep impacting and we might lose
the wall completely we don't know. The National Weather Service warned of potentially dangerous
conditions on this strip of stunning beach. They include rip currents and monster waves over the
holiday weekend. This seaside resident may have been worried but he laughed it off. I've lived
here at least 25 years and you know not more than two blocks away from the beach and I have never
seen it like this. This is very unusual. The family we told you about at the beginning says
that they're waiting to hear from the city tomorrow whether it'll be safe for them to
enter the home again. They say recently they have not been staying there for fear that it was not
safe. In Laguna Beach, Laura Diaz, Fox 11 News. Let's take a live look now at LAX which is seeing
its busiest day of the Labor Day travel rush. Around 230,000 people expected to pass through
today alone. Nearly 2 million travelers projected over the 10-day holiday period. Nationwide the
TSA is preparing for over 17 million passengers through checkpoints by Wednesday. Meantime,
AAA says gas prices are on track to set a holiday record. Regulars about 586 in LA, 584 in Orange
County, about 575 across the Inland Empire. High crude oil prices are driving the increase
and diesel prices hit record highs averaging 5.85 a gallon nationwide and nearly 7.71 in California
squeezing industries like trucking and farming. Fuel costs are driving up transportation and
grocery prices leaving small businesses and low-income households struggling to keep up.
A young woman leaves a quinceañera, stops at a Hollywood 7-Eleven for snacks and ends up
choked unconscious on the floor. Now police are asking for help in tracking down two people who
they say are responsible. Fox 11's Andres Gutierrez reports from Hollywood Boulevard.
The brutal attack happened just a few feet inside the store. It was all captured on
surveillance cameras and one week later nobody's in custody. Just after midnight last Saturday on
Hollywood Boulevard, Destiny Valderrama and her two friends walked into the 7-Eleven on Las Palmas
for snacks. Two strangers came through the doors behind them. Right there where it says ATM inside
right next to the right next right right in that hallway was when I got tackled and I started
getting strangled and I took hits on the ground. How long do you think you were unconscious for?
I have no idea. I have no idea. They wanted the gold chain and pendant around her neck.
Both friends tried to help but Valderrama says one was dragged across the floor,
the other took hits into the snack aisle. It was it was my baptism chain. I had it since I was a
baby. Her mother Elizabeth Ortiz came to the store the next day and watched the graphic video.
Ortiz told me in Spanish once the attackers are caught she wants a judge to lock him up,
adding people who do this don't belong on the streets. Because I honestly didn't think I was
going to get home that night. Like I really thought it was just going to be it for me right
there on that ground. At the time of the attack the store was full of customers. Valderrama says
she begged the employees to call police. Instead she says the store kicked them out for causing a
commotion. All I wanted was a phone call you know. I understand if they were scared to step in
but I just wanted them to call the police. LAPD confirms this is an active robbery investigation
and one week later no arrests. LAPD adds the suspects fled in an unknown direction and
detectives are still working to identify them. Reporting in Hollywood, Andres Gutierrez, Fox 11
News. Major catalytic converter theft ring is busted in Orange and Los Angeles counties.
Five people are under arrest. Look at all that right there. After a three-month investigation
here deputies say they recovered about 2,400 suspected stolen converters with an estimated
4.3 million dollars along with cash firearms and precious metals. The judge declares a mistrial
in the Lindsay Clancy case. The former nurse Massachusetts mom of three admitted to strangling
her children to death. The defense argues that Clancy should not be held criminally responsible
because she was suffering from postpartum psychosis. After seven days of deliberations
the jury was stuck 11 to 1 in favor of not guilty by reason of insanity. The 12th juror refused to
budge. The mistrial was declared. Prosecutors can try Clancy again. The judge set a hearing for
September 29th. Back here at home four young adults are dead after an overnight crash near
Wrightwood. Two others remain critical tonight. CHP says they Hyundai Veloster veered off Angeles
Crest Highway around 1 30 this morning, rolled down an embankment, hit a power pole. Five people
were ejected from the car. Relatives tell Fox 11 the group were friends in their early 20s.
Investigators say none wore seatbelts and alcohol likely played a role. I mean drive safely, drive
to arrive, speed kills and always wear your seatbelt. Don't drink and drive. I mean that's
the same message we put out every time. CHP is investigating also whether speed contributed.
The names of the four people killed have not yet been released. We'll be right back.
If you're heading to MacArthur Park this Labor Day you might run into this guy. L.A. County D.A.
Nathan Hockman says he will follow through on a promise made in June to host a picnic with his
family. The park was safe enough after increased enforcement efforts. Since then some improvements
have been noted, though challenges like visible drug use remain. Hockman says the picnic is meant
to highlight progress and the ongoing need for public safety. Nearly 6,000 homeless people in
Los Angeles could be displaced ahead of the 2020 Olympics due to security perimeters around venues
according to a new report. Researchers at USC and UCLA say the city lacks a clear plan to address the
issues raising concerns about the humane treatment of those forced to move. Officials say they'll
prioritize resources and housing but advocates are calling for action now. An abandoned and
unfinished house overlooking the San Fernando Valley is the latest problem property to grab
the attention of the two candidates for mayor. Neighbors call this property in Mulholland a
nuisance and an eyesore, also fire danger. They say their calls to get it shut down are going
unanswered. The L.A. mayor's office issued an order that gave the property owner until Monday
to clear out the area. Residents say it's about time because the problem seems to be getting worse.
It's right under the universal overlook so it's just people come at night and they use it to
party. There's graffiti all over it, beer cans and everything. The mayor's opponent in the upcoming
race, Nifia Rahman, says they've been raising the alarm about this property. Good Night L.A. Weather
is sponsored by the law offices of Larry H. Parker. As we slide into our Labor Day weekend,
we do have a few things we'll be watching for. Some of those will include the chance for a shot
at some wet weather but also a few impacts to our coastline. We are talking high surf advisory
but also a coastal flood advisory. I'll show you what's going on there in the tropics. We have not
just one or two but three tropical storms we're watching. We have Lowell that is moving to the
south of the Hawaii islands. Carina which will continue to push off to the north and west there
and as we take a look out towards Marie, Marie a little bit closer to the California coastline
but I can tell you that storm system is expected to continue to remain several hundred feet away
from us but still with that storm system currently moving on its northwest track at about eight miles
per hour. The winds associated with this hurricane currently at 100 miles per hour so that does put
it at a category two storm. It is expected to weaken down to a category one as we move into
tomorrow and as early as tomorrow that's when we're expecting to see some of our impacts here
across portions of the Orange County coastline but also portions of Ventura County and L.A.
That high surf advisory in place from tomorrow stretching through Tuesday. Waves potentially
moving four to eight feet and the further south we go four to ten feet. We're also looking at the
potential for the dangerous rip current risk so again we urge if you are not an experienced surfer
or in that water making sure to swim near those lifeguards and of course if you are in those rip
currents making sure to swim parallel until you are out of that system. Otherwise coastal flood
advisory in place during that same time frame and during that high tide cycle we could see the
potential for minor to moderate flooding and again those times will change as we push through tomorrow
and into Tuesday. Tomorrow we could see that high tide cycle at the 5 p.m hour, Sunday by 6 p.m and
as we move into Monday and Tuesday 7 and 8 p.m. Again tomorrow expected to be mostly dry across
the area probably some clouds filtering in and around the Los Angeles region but as we push into
Sunday we're talking as early as the 4 a.m hour until the afternoon around that 2 p.m hours when
we're expecting that band of moisture to go ahead and move across our area. As far as rain total
amounts our models are indicating most of us should see under about a quarter of an inch some
of us a tenth of an inch and we may see those outlying areas potentially pick up around an
inch otherwise our temperatures at 87 degrees for tomorrow as we move into Sunday 82 and then we'll
be back on the up and up temperature wise at the middle of next week and now we'll go ahead and
shift gears switching things to sports with Jaron. Superstars thank you good evening big win for USC
