AI GeneratedThe Detroit Lions are heading into their preseason finale against the Indianapolis Colts. While starters will sit, the game is critical for depth players fighting for roster spots. Key battles are unfolding at backup quarterback, running back, wide receiver, and center, with several players needing \"monster games\" to secure their place for the regular season.
All right the preseason finale is upon us today for the Detroit Lions as they
travel to Indianapolis to take on the Colts. The starters aren't playing but
that doesn't mean this isn't going to be an important game. A lot of position
battles are still up for grabs. The Lions looking for their depth. Backup
quarterback, wide receiver, running back, center. Who needs to have that monster
game today to not only give them a spot on the roster but to contribute the
regular season. We're going to talk about that and a whole lot more on this
edition of Lions Digest. Good day everybody. Yours truly Captain Lou. Want

everybody why we are one of the most passionate fan bases in all of
professional sports. Not just the Detroit Lions and again welcome to
Lions Digest. All right we talked about it. This is a very important game for a
preseason finale. A lot of question marks for depth for the Lions on the offensive
side of the ball especially. Starting with who's going to be the backup
quarterback for the Lions. Now in another question we talked with Christian Boer
who writes for the Detroit Lions on SI. Now he says these three particular
players have to have a monster game for the Lions today. That being quarterback
Lou Daltmeyer, running back Travion Williams, and wide receiver Dominic
Lovett. Well let's talk about that first the backup quarterback position. Now Josh
Dobbs he probably has the edge right now for the Lions. As that backup quarterback
Lou Daltmeyer though he's going to have to prove himself today I believe. You
look at the numbers. Dobbs 11 out of 20, 106 yards. He only played a couple of
series for the Lions in that first preseason game against Cincinnati. Lou
Daltmeyer 22 out of 35. Numbers a little bit better. One touchdown, a couple of
interceptions. He was sacked four times in the game last week against the
Washington Commanders. So again some question marks there for the Lions on
the offensive side of the ball at quarterback. Who's going to take the lead
after game three? Who's going to have that edge the game three of the
preseason rather? Who's going to have that edge at the quarterback position at
backup behind Jameer Gibbs? Now let's talk about the running back position.
Travion Williams he according to Christian Boer has to have that monster
game at running back today. But we've got some other backups that are looking to
try to maybe establish themselves as well. Let's talk about Sion Bakke for
a minute. He hasn't really played in the preseason. Now right now he's
probably third on the depth chart. But one that we have to keep in mind with
him, what about Jacob Saylor? Saylor's right now is the leading rusher for the
Lions in the preseason. He's got 90 yards rushing. He's probably been the fan
favorite for the Lions coming in in this preseason finale. He's looking to
try to get that running back four position and maybe slide himself in to
the special teams area for the Lions. Now Bakke's been that special teams guy
for the Lions for his last three years or last two years. So this is a big
opportunity for Bakke. Is he going to get some playing time in this preseason
finale? And where does that leave us with Travion Williams? Williams played
very well for the Lions in the last game against Washington.
But he still could be on the outside looking in. Maybe a practice squad player.
So this is key again for the Lions. I go back to Bakke again. I want to see
what he's got. I want to see him in a preseason game. I want to take a look and
see if he's going to have a monster game. Separate himself as that third running
back. And who knows? With Isaiah Pacheco out, we talked about it in previous
shows. He's day-to-day. He's touch-and-go with his back. So maybe all three of
these guys will start the season on the roster. One wonders what's going to
happen with Isaiah Pacheco. Now again, let's talk about the other position that
we mentioned. Wide receiver. We talked about Dominic Lovett. Really haven't
mentioned his name throughout preseason here on Lions Digest. But these running
back positions again, or I'm sorry, the wide receiver position, it all starts to
me with Isaac Tesla. He's had a poor preseason. The opening game, he
had two big drops. He's probably going to see some action. What about number four
position? That's the one we're going to keep an eye on. I think Tesla will
probably come into the preseason, or into the regular season rather, as the
third wide receiver. But he's got some people pressing him. Dominic Lovett, I'm
not sure if he's going to be able to make that jump all the way to number
three. He's probably shooting for number four, or maybe an opportunity to latch on
to the practice squad. But here's a guy that I want to keep an eye on for the
Lions at the wide receiver position. He's had himself a monster preseason, and
that's Jackson Meeks. Now I look at what he's got to the table. 11 receptions, 176
yards, and two touchdowns. Now you say Jackson Meeks, he's come out of nowhere,
right? He was initially penciled in to be maybe the fourth tight end for the
Lions. Now that's a luxury. I don't see the Lions being able to, to have into
the 2026 season. But he has played so well in this preseason, that he's, you
know, he's showing that his worth is there for the Lions. Maybe he can sneak
in as that fourth wide receiver. Now again, we ask you what about, what about
what they did? They signed Greg Dorch in the offseason. What, you know, what, what
about him? He's been pretty quiet in the preseason. More than likely, they're
going to use Dorch as a kick returner and a punt returner in the regular
season. But I think Dorch has to have himself a good showing as well for the
Lions. But I go back to Dominic Leavitt. I'm not sure really what, if he's got
that opportunity, we'll have to wait and see. He'll get some, he'll get some time
today in the preseason finale for the Lions. Now, before we get to the linemen,
and again, that battle at center for the Lions, I want to ask you, what do you
think? What is your position that you're looking for today going into that
regular season finale for the Lions? What's the most important one? Is it the
quarterback? Is it the glamour position for the Lions? Is it Dobbs and Altmyer?
What about the running back position? Is it going to be Sailors going up, you
know, against Travion Williams, Sion Bakke? When are we going to see what
Bakke's got? Are you wondering about that? What about wide receiver? How
confident are you in Tesla? Do you think Meeks should get that opportunity for
the Lions, maybe as a third or fourth receiver? Have Dortch slide in there? Do
you think Lovett's got a chance? Who's got to have that monster game, in your
opinion? I would love to see that in the comments. We'll talk about it after the
game, obviously, in a future episode. What about defensive back? We're really
not going to touch on that today, but that's a position of glamour, too, for
the Lions, because it always seems to be a weakness. And again, we could talk
about it. Offensive line, what about that as well? Love to see your comments on
this as well, here on Lions Digest. Now, again, we talked about the center
position. We've been talking about that all preseason, right?
Cade Mayes, he's going to be out until probably the bye week, maybe a little bit
longer, our free agent acquisition from the Carolina Panthers. Who's been able to
step up? Seth McLaughlin, I think, has to have a monster game, if for nothing else,
to keep a spot on the roster. This is going to be very intriguing for Dan
Campbell, you know, after this preseason finale. I have a feeling, if they put him
on waivers, he's going to be snatched up. So, Brad Holmes has got a big decision to
make. Now, we know, pretty much, I just have a feeling Juice Scruggs, Juice
Scruggs, rather, has that center position locked up until Cade Mayes comes back.
And then, he also has the ability to slide over and back up that guard, and I
think that's huge for the Lions, that's huge for him. So, that's the other
position that I'm going to keep an eye on in this preseason game. So, again, who do
you, who, in your opinion, has to have monster games today for the Lions? I'm
going to go with Luke Altmyer. I'm going to go with Travion Williams, just so he can
potentially keep a spot on the roster, but I'm also keeping an eye on Sailors
to see if, maybe, he could sneak his way up ahead of Vakie. They could be the
Knuckles right now, or Pacheco. So much to look at. Who's going to need to have
that monster game again? And at the wide receiver position, I mean, does Tesla
give you a lot of confidence? I think he doesn't give it to me. So, really going to
be anxious to see what happens today in that preseason finale for the Lions.
