Good morning. I'm Jacqueline matter. It is four a.m. On this friday, september
four. Thanks for starting your morning with us right here on Fox five and
streaming on Fox local. Here's what's happening today. Tens of thousands of
people waking up in the dark this morning after wild storms rolled
through overnight. We're live with the cleanup plus our weather team tracking
the chances for more storms later today. Plus the searches on this morning
for a man accused of raping women at local massage spas where police stand
and tracking him down. And a new juvenile curfew zone in northwest D. C.
goes into effect tonight. The area is impacted ahead of the Labor Day
holiday weekend and how long it will last. Fox five mornings at four a.m.
starts right now.
Good morning. Thanks for joining us on this friday before we head into the
holiday weekend. A lot of people wondering, hopefully those storms don't
continue to roll in into the weekend. But overnight, a lot of people seeing
severely impacted by these storms. Jacqueline, that's really just the main
case, right? A lot of those storms really just popped up at one of the
worst parts of the night, right? So a lot of people trying to get the bed,
things like that. So it was causing quite a lot of disruption out there.
And normally we don't usually see that, uh, that strength of storm or level of
severity, right? Um, usually we lose a lot of the daytime heating, but because
of how humid and just hot the day was, well, that left us with a lot of energy.
So we'll talk more about exactly what's going on with the rest of today and
what we can expect in terms of temperatures. But just understand it's
another hot day. And yes, we still have thunderstorms in the forecast. I'll
break all of that down here in just a couple of minutes over to you. All
right, Caesar. Thank you. Speaking of those strong storms that swept across
the area last night, there are a lot of trees down across our region this
morning. In fact, there's also 10,000 of 10s of thousands of residents that
are waking up without power this morning as well are mentally awake,
getting a look out on the roads this morning and joins us live with more.
How's it looking out there, Mel? I gotta tell you, it is not looking great.
So we are right now here on the GW Parkway, and I'm gonna switch the
camera over here so that you can see what drivers are going to be
encountering this morning. Um, and we've seen far too many vehicles
traveling fast here. You can just kind of see here back over the lights
there from the police officer. Look at this tree. Now, this is a tree that
has come down all the way across from the other side, the northbound side of
the GW Parkway here into the southbound lanes. And this is just one of two
trees down here on the GW Parkway. There's another one a little further up.
And so if you are driving this, first of all, the northbound lanes are
closed. The southbound lanes are open. But please be very, very careful as you
are driving around here, because it is not going to be a great situation for
you. We also saw similar situations like this on Canal Road as well. And as
you mentioned, let me just give you a rundown right now of the power outages
in the area as well. So Dominion, Virginia, currently reporting 63,900
people without power. Pepco's got 15,000 out in D. C. 32,000 out in
Prince George's County and just a couple 100 in Montgomery County. Also,
B. G. E. Anne Arundel County's got about 4000 in Prince George's County. A
little more than 3300. So definitely this is a very big situation. It's got
a lot of things that the power companies are going to have to encounter.
And as I mentioned, a number of issues there. We've got some video as well
that we're going to show you that you can see here. Now this is in D. C. This
is on Eighth Street, where you can see that tree has come down on top of that
roof. We've got Prince George's County, a roof collapse in Kettering as well.
And then we also had some people calling us from Anne Arundel County,
Franklin Manor. They had a structure collapse as well. Look at this video
sent into us by a viewer, and you can just just imagine the terror here.
You've got these major storms coming down, and then you have just your roof
and everything inside those rooms collapsing. We know in one case, a young
boy had to be rescued. Now he is expected to be okay, but this is just
some of what people are dealing with. Now let's go back out live now to our
of we're gonna turn it once again to the forward facing camera. You can see
here is the other tree down here on the GW Parkway. And again, we're just
seeing tree debris leaves everything around the area. What we're gonna do
right now is we're heading down toward the Alexandria section of Fairfax
County. We understand there was at least one high water rescue there down
near the Slater's Lane. We know Alexandria tends to flood a lot, but
these are this is more of that flash flooding issue. And there's a number of
areas around Inova Alexandria Hospital that have no power right now. So that
is the situation this morning. We'll keep going around the area and you
know what we find and certainly keep you updated on Pepco's restoration
efforts. Jacqueline. All right, Mel. Thank you. And as a reminder, as we saw
in her live shot there, there are down trees across the region, including on
some of those major roadways. So take it easy and take it slow if you are
headed out this morning. Well, a shooting investigation is underway in
Prince George's County this morning after a child was shot and critically
injured. It happened at a home in the 300 block of Tayside Way in Landover
around eight o'clock last night. Police have not said how old that victim is
and says the circumstances of the shooting are still unclear. As soon as
we do learn more will, of course, bring you those details happening today. A
preliminary hearing for a man accused of carrying out a shooting that injured a
two year old boy. It happened in Northeast D. C. Back in July, court
documents say Casanova Lamos was involved in an argument at Benning
Court's apartments. The boy's mother claims that he opened fire before she
could close the door. A bullet grazed the side of her son's head. All right,
let's get you outside as well this morning out towards Frederick, Maryland
and trying to see if it's you can pretty much we all saw storm storms in
some form or fashion last night. So Jacqueline, yes. So Frederick saw them a
little before the rest of this area did. So it kind of went from that northwest
to southeast direction and it continues actually to push out towards the east.
So if we look at radar satellite and radar at the moment, you can you can
see still that giant cluster of storms. That was what caused all that
commotion last night, right? All the lightning, the strong winds as well as
also the heavy rain that produced, of course, the the flooding that we had
Melanie talking about, of course. But one thing I want to point out is that
we do have another little area that we're just keeping an eye on, not
necessarily expecting to see this go severe, but still some occasional extra
rain is expected, of course, maybe a gusty breeze or two out of these storms.
So, of course, could still potentially just put a little bit of a slowdown on
our day. But we are still relatively warm out there. Temperatures mostly in
those mid to low seventies for a lot of us. And this is going to give us that
very warm base to work off of as we say, see yet another hot and humid day on
tap. So we're expecting to see quite a lot of that warmth really building back
in towards the afternoon hours and sticking with us as we head into the
evening and overnight time frame. We're going to continue to time out exactly
what future cast is showing here on the potential for another round of storms
towards the afternoon and evening time frame coming up in just a couple of
minutes. Jacqueline. All right, Caesar. Thank you. Taking a look at traffic this
morning. This is what Melanie mentioned earlier is some high standing water in
both directions at Benning Road. So this is a long 2 95 heading north and
southbound this morning. It is possible, but use some caution if you
were heading through that area this morning, some minor delays heading
southbound. Just keep in mind across this region this morning, a lot of
people waking up with down trees down power lines. So just take it slow as
you are headed out for your morning commute. Well, jurors will return for a
seventh day of deliberations in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial. It comes
after jurors were unable to reach a verdict yesterday and were sent home.
The jury sent the judge a note saying one juror was not following the
instructions on reasonable doubt. Clancy's defense attorney asking the
judge to remove that juror, but the judge refused. Instead, he reminded the
jury of the law and sent them back to continue deliberating. Clancy, of
course, accused of strangling her three Children in 2023. Her lawyers argue she
suffered from postpartum psychosis, but prosecutors say it was pre meditated
today. A Silver Spring dentist faces a pretrial hearing this morning following
his arrest for several sexual offenses. Detectives charged Dr Maya Samaya after
a patient reportedly said that he sexually assaulted her on two separate
occasions during procedures when no hygienist was present. Investigators
reveal Samaya was previously placed on probation by the state dental board in
2018. Because of that prior report, police believe there could be more
victims out there in Spotsylvania. Search is underway for a man accused of
raping women at local massage spas. Police believe 30 year old Caesar Mario
Torres Juarez of Spotsylvania is responsible for several sexual assaults
at massage therapy businesses on Plank Road. He's wanted on multiple felony
charges, including rape and strangulation. According to
investigators, Juarez is also accused of raping another employee at a
different spa on the same road. This past Monday, police say they have not
been able to find him. It's unlikely that this person walked into these two
different massage parlors and committed these assaults. He's been charged with
and hasn't done any other crimes. So that gives law enforcement a lot of
places that they can search. They'll talk to the other massage parlors.
They'll even see if he may have scouted out the two that he may have committed
these crimes in. Authorities asking any victims of unreported assaults to come
forward. Investigators believe Juarez may be in south Boston, Virginia.
Starting tonight, a new juvenile curfew zone will go into effect and last
through the Labor Day weekend. Take a look here at the area of the Northwest
D. C. D. C. Police activating that curfew zone around the U Street corridor
and Banneker Recreation Center. This will affect people under the age of 18
from eight p.m. Tonight to 11 p.m. On Monday, the citywide juvenile curfew
also remains in effect. Still to come this morning, a concert canceled last
night after a man was crushed by a tour bus at Wolf Trap National Park. The
latest on that investigation plus reaction from fans and after 35 years,
Dollywood saying farewell to its bald eagles. The reason why when we return
plus teaser Caesar. Well, Jacqueline, right now we continue to look at some
of these rain showers over towards parts of western Pennsylvania. What is
that exactly mean for us throughout the rest of today? Well, I'll have that
answer in just a few moments.
