We all felt very inspired by Gloria's choice to spend her life standing up for women.
She was deeply inspiring to me and I think many of us feel a deep
debt of gratitude to her. She has been somebody whose career I followed for many years and I'm
certainly not the only person that has been affected by her and put together on her behalf,
but as somebody who admires her I'm grateful for the opportunity to express my gratitude.
I live on the Upper East Side, we do, and I thought okay we got to come down here first
thing and really honor what she did for women. She was very inclusive, she was pro-choice,
but she didn't dictate anybody's philosophy. You could do whatever you wanted to do,
but she knew who she was and she wanted to be free and she lived that way. She helped found
Ms. Magazine in the, I think, 69, 70, early 70s. That was instrumental in my
formation as a young person starting out in college and wanting to have my own career.
I didn't want to depend on a man for my living and that was so reinforcing to have women like her.
Obviously it wasn't just her and she was so articulate about it and not, you know, off-putting
at all. She wanted to include everybody and women could have the choice. That's the thing,
whatever they wanted to do, you know, you could have a voice. She's definitely one of the most
influential people, the women's rights and human rights and all that, so that's why I'm here.
How would you choose to remember her? Talking to people about her
and how important she was and dropping off red carnations because I know she liked red
and saying she's a hero to all women because she is, whether they know it or not.
