I Tested Mizuno’s New S-4 Irons

There's a brand new set of Mizuno S4 irons in this box. And over the next few days, I want to see if these irons can actually replace my gamers. I've been using the P7CBs for over two years now. No matter what I test over here, I just come back to these because they offer me feel and forgiveness for someone that only golfs every three or four weeks. But I feel like these S4s have a genuine shot of replacing them. So here's the game plan. Day one, right now, I'm going to hit these things on the launch monitor. I got to see what kind of numbers they produce. If they can't produce numbers as good as my P7CBs, they don't stand a chance of going in the bag. They're not the irons for me, no matter how good they look or feel. But obviously, if they pass the number test, we're going to take them in the driving range and dive into that amazing soul and Mizuno feel. So if they pass that test, I'm going to take them out for 18 holes and see if they can seamlessly replace those irons without missing a beat. So let's start testing. Contextually, why the S4s? Well, if you've been watching the channel, I tested the S1s and the S3s, and the S1s were actually perfect for me. They deliver the absolute best numbers that I want out of an iron, but they do not give me the forgiveness that I need in an iron. The S3 offers that forgiveness, but that particular stuff that I tested with KBS Tours just spun too much in the long irons. So they couldn't be something that I fully built out because when I do test irons, Mizuno has sent me three S1s, three S3s. This time around, I asked, hey, can I have a full set built to my specs? Because I think these could genuinely earn a spot in the bag and they did, they obliged. So these are KBS Tour V shafts, extra stiff. So I have very, very high hopes. I'm very excited because, man, I love those S1s and S3s. Hopefully this could be the set that goes in my bag. All right, it didn't take very long. Pitching wedge, it looks exactly like the S3 to my memory. The performance is incredible. I mean, I only hit eight shots and ones that I kind of turned over, peak height was lower, a little longer, but I would pull pitching wedge pretty comfortably from 137 to 141, depending on the wind. But this is straight from the box. Pitching wedge numbers, eh, yep. Set a seven iron now. I've only hit seven shots with this and it's already pretty near perfect. Haven't seen the spin above 64, even though the face has been square and I've been hitting little fades. So it's a couple yards shorter than I would want, but this one, this is perfect. This is a pretty squared up seven iron flying 182 with 6,100 RPM of spin. That's exactly what I want. And if I get more comfortable, I can really step into it, get a few more yards out of it. But if we look at the table for these seven, sure, it's a few yards less than what I would want, but that spin window is so tight and the face has been quite square, feels quite good. The ball speed is good. I'm gonna hit a few more because this just feels really good. Moment of truth, four iron. The long irons are the ones that I need to be spot on for these to genuinely have a chance of going in the bag because the numbers on the S1s were perfect, but there's not enough forgiveness in the four and five iron for where I'm at as a player these days. And then the S3s just spun a little bit too much. So I lost some distance. This is it, big, big, big, big test. The four iron is solid. It is spinning a little higher than I think what I would like. I would love to see it under 4,000, but maybe that's a me thing. I'm just out of curiosity. I'm gonna hit my four iron right here and we'll just see. We'll just see if I'm still remembering right how much this thing spins. Maybe my memory has been misserving me. I hit that one okay, let's say an eight out of 10, and I hit a few eight out of 10s already with the S4 and it spun 4,700 RPM, went 205. In here, that's 10 yards shorter than what I would want out there. So you think out there, maybe a little bit more speed, spin comes down a hair. So these have passed the number test. Now we gotta take them to the range and see if they can continue to live up to the Mizuno feel. You may have noticed, I didn't put them in the bag. We're bringing them to test them. We don't need the full set just yet. I think we'll grab the eight iron and the five iron to get a feel for what these can do through the turf trajectory control and just that feel. Good, so I've hit a few shots with them. They just feel fantastic. I mean, the S1s, the S3s felt so good through the turf. This tri-cut sole is just exactly what a player like me needs who fights getting a little steep from time to time. How quickly this leading edge can kind of get in and out of the turf helps. I mean, they're meant to be bigger. They don't feel like a big player's cavity. And there, I thinned that and I knew exactly right away that feedback. I mean, they say nothing feels like a Mizuno. This grain flow forged 1025 carbon steel and they put some copper in there for enhanced feel and have this whole hit thing for sound. The feel and sound is so good. Slightly higher launching, they say. I don't know if I'm noticing that with range balls. Let's see if I can flight one or chunk it. And I flighted it, I just mishit it. Man, they go in and out of that turf really, really well. It feels so good. The sound is really good. This is only just the eight iron. I mean, inside the feel is good, but that's why. There's the higher launch for sure, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Oh yeah. I mean, a little thin, but gosh, that felt so good. Five iron time. That doesn't look very big. Even when I compare it to my P7CB, definitely feels a little smaller. It definitely still can induce confidence for a player's cavity. Come on, man. Oh, off the toe. Gosh, that towering. You know exactly where you hit it with a Mizuno. When you mishit it, you know instantly. The feedback and the feel is so good. Oh, that's amazing. Little active with the hand, so it just turned over. That's so good. Again, I'm getting a little active, so it's drawing more than I would like it to. But that's a me thing, not a club thing. Oh man, that's freaking perfect. Gosh, this feel good. And when you hit it well, oh, that feeling is hard to top. Well, the irons take the boxes for me with the numbers. Still not 100% sold on the long irons, numbers wise, but we're gonna experience that on the golf course. They obviously 100% feel so good and are reacting to the turf so well out here. So the next step in the game plan is take my irons out of the bag and put the Mizunos in the bag because we're going on a little couples weekend with some friends this weekend, where you know the dads, we got golf on Saturday. So I'm gonna play Mission Resort and Club, the Las Colinas course, which I've played once before. Memory serves me right. There's a lot of variety, so I might hit a lot of irons out there. So it's a perfect test to see if these can seamlessly flow into the bag and replace those. We'll see on the golf course. All right, 174, a little bit of help. So it's like right in between clubs. Can you hit a small flighted seven iron? That's enough for a miss hit. That's gold. I'll take that and run on a miss hit. This is a good one. I've got 143 out of the rough. Last hole I had 150 out of the rough and the control out of the rough was really good. Can I just hit a strong pitching wedge and see how this thing goes through kind of a wet, rough UI. I'm gonna hit this solid. Oh, a little on the thin side. Is it enough? Right at it. It almost went in. That'll do. So that distance control, kind of one groove low out of thick rough. Right at the, over there. Yeah, we'll take that. That was a seamless transition into the bag so far through five holes. On the 12th hole, gotta say, this has just been a pretty seamless flow into the bag. The distance control is there. The feel is there. The feedback, just like a range session. It's a Mizuno. The feedback is so good. You know if you hit it a little thin, it's a little thin. But what I've noticed is that a couple that were maybe a groove low and they still were great. I mean, that pitching wedge on the front, so solid for being like a groove low out of the rough, like we flagged it. Just really, really impressive. The only thing, I mean, I've made a couple bad swings, so I've hit some bad shots, kind of flipping it a little. The only thing is I haven't hit a long iron. I hope coming in here I can have a four or five iron and hit it well and see what kind of distance I get out of it. But this is just a seamless integration, putting these into the bag. The feel is phenomenal, phenomenal. Asking you shall receive 13th hole. I have an adjusted 214 with a little bit of wind helping out of this rough into the par five. If I hit a solid five iron downwind, maybe. I scuffed it a bit. Nah, I caught it a little heavy. So I hit from down there, 214, a little scruffy out of the rough. I said maybe if we hit it well and it jumps, it would be pin high, some distance. What I would want from it. 223 yard par three. That is perfect. More iron. Let's see if I can hit a good shot. Just so late. I mean, I struck it well, but where are you going? Well, we were very late. It probably landed about here. I mean, pin high. So even on a total kind of late, face open distance was appropriate. So it checks those boxes with the long irons. I just need to hit it better. On 18 here, wrapping up the round. And I've got to say unequivocally, these are staying in the bag. They were just seamless. They feel so good. The trajectory, the spin, the distance, they ticked all the boxes. Even on the miss hits, I got plenty out of them. Hit pretty well today. I think I made six birdies, a couple bogeys. So four under, we're testing a new set of irons. These irons tick all the boxes. So if you were looking for a little bit more forgiveness in a Mizuno player's iron, look no further than the S4s. Because for someone like me, they just tick all the boxes, but they give me the forgiveness that I need for someone that doesn't practice as often as they would like to, but still wants to get a lot out of their iron play. Mizuno, thank you for making such an incredible iron. I'm so excited to play them because I haven't played Mizuno iron since the pro twos in like junior golf college. We'll see you next week.
