You've probably opened Canva, looked at the tools and wonder where do I even start?
If that's you, don't worry.
In this tutorial, we are going to create an Instagram post
that instantly grab attention and make people want to stop scrolling
and we'll build it completely from scratch.
As we create the post, we'll explore Canva's features along the way.
From choosing the right elements and editing visuals
to working with templates and making those final design tweaks.
So by the end, you won't just know how Canva works,
you'll know how to actually use it to create posts
that look professional and get noticed.
So let's jump right in.
Before we start designing, let's quickly understand what Canva actually is.
Canva is an online graphic design platform that lets you create
almost anything without needing professional design skills.
Whether it's Instagram posts, YouTube thumbnails, presentations,
resumes, posters, business card, logos, videos, websites,
or even invitations. Canva makes the entire process incredibly simple
with the drag-and-drop editor.
And the best part is, you don't need expensive software
or years of experience. If you can use browser, you can use Canva.
So let's open Canva. This is the Canva homepage.
Right at the top, you'll find the search bar.
Think of this as a Google search bar, but for designs.
If you search for Instagram post,
Canva will show you Instagram templates.
If you search for resumes, it will show you resume templates.
If you search for presentation, it will show you presentation layouts.
Basically, whatever you want to create,
you can just start by searching here.
Next, we have a create a design button.
The button helps you create a design from scratch
or choose a Canva's preset sizes.
You'll also see templates over here.
Templates are the Canva's biggest strengths.
Instead of designing everything yourself,
you can just simply choose a professionally designed layout
and customize it. Now, on the left,
you can again see, you'll notice projects.
This is where Canva automatically saves all your works.
So even if you close your browser,
you can always come back and continue editing.
Next, we have notice brand hub.
If you are designing for a company or a personal brand,
you can save your logos, fonts, brand colors,
and everything over here.
And finally, Canva has Magic Studio.
This is Canva's collection of AI powered tools.
AI tools help us to automate tasks
and get personalized results faster
and it will help to generate and improve designs also.
Now, enough of exploring, let's actually create something.
Let's dive right in. For this tutorial,
let's imagine that you own a coffee shop
and you want to run an offer of buy one get one free
for this weekend.
Okay, our goal is to create an Instagram post
that looks professional, grabs attention,
and most importantly, it should not look like a template.
Let's start by creating an Instagram post
and opening the Canva editor.
Now, before we start changing things over here,
let's quickly understand what we are looking at.
So, the last space in the center is our canvas.
This is where we'll build the design.
On the left, you'll find the main tools using
like templates, elements, text, uploads, apps.
You don't need to memorize everything on the screen,
right?
As we build the design,
I'll show you the features that actually matters.
So, let's get started.
Choosing a template.
Instead of designing everything from scratch,
we are going to use a template as our starting point.
Okay, I'll open a template
and search for something related to coffee.
Canva gives us a huge number of options,
but here's an important point.
Don't choose the template just
because it looks good, right?
Choose a layout that works best
for the message you want to communicate, fine?
For our post,
we need a clear headline, a strong visual,
and enough space for an offer.
So, we'll choose a clean template
that gives us the structure.
And just like that,
we already have a starting point,
but this is someone else's design.
So, now we are going to customize and make it our own.
Easiest way to edit something in Canva is simply to select it.
Let's start with the main heading.
We'll replace the existing one.
We'll make it Weekend Coffee Festival.
Now, the design starts feeling like it's more relevant
to our business.
Now, let's look at the typography.
The font you choose can completely change
the personality of the design.
For this particular post,
I want something bold, clean, and easy to read.
I'm going to adjust the size of the headline
because it's the first thing anyone notices.
And this is something to keep in mind when we design.
Not every piece of text needs to compete for attention, right?
Your main message should stand out first
and supporting information should be smaller and quieter.
That's what creates visual hierarchy.
We can also make small adjustments to the spacing
between the letters and lines to make the heading feel cleaner.
You don't need to use extreme values here, right?
Just adjust the spacing
until the text feels comfortable and balanced.
Now, let's change the text color.
If you want to change the color,
you can change and choose it according to the background
that you have chosen for the template.
I'll be going with this one only.
I choose this color that contrasts well with the background.
Now, let's update the supporting text.
I'll change it to buy one get one free.
When someone sees an Instagram post while scrolling,
they should understand the main message almost immediately.
So instead of filling the designs with text,
we are just keeping the hierarchy simple.
What is it?
What's the offer and when it is happening fine.
That's enough to communicate the message.
Canvas alignment guides are also really helpful here.
As we move the elements around you can simply see
the guides appear to help you the line things up use them.
Good alignment is one of the easiest way
to make the design look more professional.
So now let's work on the background.
The current background works looks well to me.
So I'm not going to change it.
But if you feel that you want to change the theme of it,
you can go for a darker version to give it a moody dark style
and text should pop up right and notice
what happens to the text the text immediately becomes
more visible.
If you are changing it to darker thing,
basically contrast matters.
If you are in a dark background use a light text
the text immediately becomes more visible.
If you are using the darker thing will be using
the simple principle,
which is a contrast him, right?
If you are using the darker background will be using
the light text and if you are using the lighter background,
then we'll be having the dark text color, right?
You don't need to be professional designs to use
this principles.
Just make sure that your text is visible before worrying
about design to look fancy
because we need it's very important to communicate
our message through the post.
Now the design is looking better,
but it feels a little plain.
So let's add a few visuals elements.
I'll open elements search for something related to coffee.
We can search coffee bins anything you feel you can add
canvas element library includes icons illustration shapes lines
stickers chart frames and much more
and here's another important rule don't add elements just
because they are available fine.
Every element should have a purpose for our design
and I'll be using this coffee icon
and which will add the little visual interest.
I'll position it over here.
I'm not trying to feel every empty space.
So now I want to make the offer even more noticeable.
I simply add the shape behind the offer text to highlight it
then I'll position the offer text sits clearly on the top
and just like that.
We have created the visual highlight
without adding anything complicated.
This is really useful Canva tanking you
can use simple shapes behind text to create buttons banners
labels and much more now
if the shape ends up covering the text that's
where layer comes in think of Canva as a stack of objects.
The objects on the top appears first the objects
underneath appears behind right
so we can use the position controls to move
the shape backward and bring the text forward.
Once you understand layers lot of those frustrating comments
that you are seeing why this object is even covering my text
moments become very easy to fix right now
that our offer banner is ready.
We may want to move the text
and shape together instead of moving them separately.
We can group them select both elements
and group them together.
Now to behave like one object.
We can move them resize them duplicate them
without having a reposition everything individually.
It's a small feature.
But once you start creating more complex design,
it saves a lot of time at this point.
We have taken a generic template
and already turned it into something
that feels much more like your own
but there's still one thing giving it the template
feeling the stock image.
So let's replace it with the on visual.
I'll open up notes.
This is where you can bring your own images videos logos
audios and your assets into the Canva.
I'll upload a coffee image from my computer fine.
If it doesn't match the vibe or background,
I'll either just crop it or replace it
with something that fits better.
Once it's uploaded.
We can simply drag it into the design.
One of the best thing about Canva is
that you don't necessarily have to rebuild the layout
when you have an option of replacing it with an image
if the template already has an image area.
We can crop our image into Canva
and automatically that fits
into layout when replacing an image
that saves a lot of time
by selecting the image and repositioning it.
We can control which part of the photo is available.
This is especially useful
when the subject is in position exactly where you want.
So instead of resizing the entire design,
we can simply adjust the frames and we can edit the image.
We can also make some quick adjustment to the image itself
under the image editing options.
Canva gives us the control of brightness contrast
from saturation and much more.
You don't need to become a photo editor export to use this
small adjustment are often enough.
Okay for this image my image.
I'll do the changes to make this coffee gives a rich feel
and fit the overall color palette
and there's a key don't edit an image
that just because you can do it right edit it
because if it helps and fit in better now,
let me show you another really useful Canva feature
which is frames.
Let's say we don't want our image to appear
as a regular rectangle.
We can go to elements search for frames choose a shape.
I'll use this frame.
Now we can simply drag the coffee image into it
and Canva automatically fits the image inside the frame.
We can reposition the image with the frame
and get the exact crop.
We want frames are useful for decorative designs.
You can use this profile pictures product image team members.
Okay, you can remove it.
Also once you start using them,
you will find a lot of creative ways to incorporate them
into your work right into your designs.
And now there are two more small features
while are worth knowing while you're working with images.
The first is transparency.
If image is competing too much with your text reduce
the transparency slightly that can help the text stand out.
This is usually useful
when you're using an image as an part of your background.
Just remember subtle is better
and you don't need to necessarily work
on the transparency or other features.
Also, if you like the design,
you can just keep it the same way.
The second feature is lock.
Once you've positioned and element exactly
where you want you can lock it.
So don't accidentally move it by editing something else,
right because using Canva first time can makes it
more complicated so you can just lock it
and it will be at its position only this becomes
especially useful
when you're working with multiple layers also
before we move on let's take a step back
and look at the design as a whole we started with template.
We have changed the message typography colors images layouts,
but most important thing is it it is not
that how many features we use it's
whether the design communicates the message clearly.
So whenever you finish a design just ask yourself
three questions, right?
Can I understand the message quickly is
the most important message easily noticeable
and does every element has a reason to be there,
right if answer is yes,
you already on the right track and remember good design isn't
just about adding more sometimes removing something is
what makes designs better.
Now what we have created our design manually.
Let's look at the another side of Canva
that can speed up the creative process can was a ideals,
right can was magic studio brings together
the several AI powered features
that can help with everything from designing
generating ideas and text visuals.
Let's look at the few
that is actually useful first as a magic design.
If you're starting at the bank and was
and you don't know where to start you can describe the type
of design you want can walk
and generate multiple design direction use based on one
that for example,
we can ask for a modern Instagram post
for a coffee shop promoting and buy one get one offer.
Right you can use one of as the starting point
and customize that as a regular image think of this as a way
to get rid of your blank page problem,
right next is magic red.
Let's say your design is ready,
but you are struggling to write the copy.
You can give can was simple prompt such as write
a catchy Instagram post for a coffee shop.
We cannot it can generate several ideas
that you can add it another it wouldn't recommend copying
AI generated text blindly use it as a starting point.
Then make sure the final copy actually sounds
like your friend.
Another useful tool is a magic media.
We don't have right visuals for your design.
You can generate what you need
and can work and generate an image from your project.
For example,
a cup of hot coffee on a wooden table
with her warm morning lights.
You can experiment with the generated results
and choose something that beats your designs,
right depending on your Canva blend some AI features.
Usage limits may vary so keep that in mind
and one more practical feature is background remover.
If you have uploaded the product image background is
on work with your design canva can automatically remove it.
You can place the isolated subject
on the completely different background or post promotions
social media content and but this feature is
for pro users now our design is ready.
So let's talk about the final step exporting it
from the share menu choose download.
Canva gives you several formats depending on
what you are creating for a standard social media graphic.
PNG is usually a good choice
when you want to import a high quality image JPG can be useful
when you want a smaller file size
and for documents formats like P PDF,
maybe make more sense,
right the important thing is to choose a format based on where
and how you're going to use the design
and for our Instagram post will export it
to the high quality image and that's it.
Our design is ready to use and that's it.
We have taken a single template and turned it
in the polished and purposeful design
while exploring the tools that make canvas.
So versatile the best way to get comfortable
with Canva is to keep experimenting try
different layouts colors images and styles
and see what works for you
with little practice this tools will become a natural part
of your design workflow.
Thank you and see you in the next one.
