AI GeneratedAt the Chrysler Nationals in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, Lou interviews George and Nancy McVeigh about George's 1965 Plymouth Satellite convertible. George has owned the car since he bought it new upon his high school graduation 61 years ago. The vehicle is a remarkably preserved \"time capsule\" that has remained largely stock, reflecting a lifelong commitment to both his car and his wife.
Hi, I'm Lou with another episode of My Car Story. Today we're in Carlisle, Pennsylvania at the
Chrysler Nationals and I'm fortunate enough to meet George McVeigh and his wife Nancy.
And Nancy, how long has George owned this car? For 61 years. So he's had it since
new. New. He bought this car new. And George, so you have this one car that you bought new and
then Nancy, you've been married to her, so you basically have one car, one girl, that's it.
You've made easy decisions in life. What year, make, and model is this car we're going to see?
It's a 1965 Plymouth Satellite convertible. You're going to love this one. Let's take a look at our
featured traction and come right alongside me, Nancy and George. Come right back here.
All right, so here is our car and as you can see, it looks really great. Actually,
the sun's blinding it, so I'm going to go just a little bit that way.
We get it right. See if I can get it there in the sun for you.
Nope, that bumper is so bright. Yeah, let's come on over this way. So George,
what was it about this car and this year? Because this is a one-year body style, correct?
Yeah, it was only built one year and then they changed the body to what I call a square body.
Okay. And why I bought it is just the reason I bought it, I seen one like it in a picture.
Yeah. So I went to a dealer and they showed me some stuff and I graduated and I said,
well, I need a new car. So that's what I did. And this is it. I bought myself a new car. So
that's the first new car I ever bought in my life. So this is your forever car. Yep.
You're forever girl. Yeah, forever girl, forever car. All right, come on back with me guys.
Clearly it's a satellite. Let's walk back this way. We're going to get the, George,
come on back. We're going to get the whole side of the car. Now we've kept the top up
only because it is hot today. So we are going to keep the top up
and we're trying not to get too hot with this hot car. Black interior. Black interior. Yeah,
might be a little hot. And I love the spinners. Now, did you pick all the options or was this
in a dealer showroom? It's not standard on the satellite. The satellite is the sports car of
the Belvedere class. Okay. You can see those spinners. You could get your fingers back there.
Yeah. That's a stock. The car is stock basically. Yeah. Maybe that's even a better picture of the
spinners there. You could see the spinner that way. And then let me show people the back. I
like the little red, white, and blue pieces there. Interesting too, they had a marker light in 65.
Those marker lights, when they came out in 68, I put them on. Okay. That's why they're there.
That's why they're on that car. They really shouldn't be, but they look so good.
They do look good. That's why you had me. I thought for sure they came.
They came out in 68. And I like that turned metal and I'll get even closer to it so people can see
it. That's all factory. Yeah. And the satellite. Mopars and Harley's. Nice. Okay. Let's open the
trunk, shall we? We've got a few trunk of treats for them. Nancy, what's it like when you're with
George in this car? Do you like coming to the car shows? Oh, yes. Tell me why you like the car shows.
Is it because George is here? Well, George is here number one. I just enjoy all the cars that we get
to see and the people we get to meet. And it's just a lot of fun. It is a lot of fun. I hope more
women hear what you're saying and come to see us. George, we've got these three different 273
engines. That's the three engines that were available at the time. And yours is the metal?
Mine's the metal to commando. Got you. And I also saw this article here. That's one of the
pictures I seen that made me buy the car. This is it? Yeah. And then basically you bought this car
other than the fact that it's got a black interior. Well, when I ordered it, I go with
black interior and black top. Now, have you restored it? No. It's not restored? Nope. Turn
around for just a second. I want to get you. In 1982, I put antique tags on it and I painted it,
repainted it, and I put a new top on. And that's all I ever did to the car. Got it. So you freshened
it up? The car has never been torn apart. You freshened it up? Yeah. That's all you did? It's
never been restored. The interior is all original. I'm going to go to the interior if you'll allow
me. Can I go? Can I open it up? Sure. Sure. I'll open it up. Okay. Let me have you close the trunk
for us, if you would please. Yeah, it is a little scorching here in Carlisle, so I'm the black. The
only thing that's been redone in the interior of this seat, it wore out, so they sewed one for me.
Nice. But everything else is completely stock. Wow. So this is a time capsule. Yes, it is.
Wow. Let's see our seat here with the chrome piece. Look at your... And that Sun SuperTac?
Yeah. That a dealer installed when I bought the car. Is that right? I was one of their incentives.
They put a Sun SuperTac in for me. Got it. What is this little button here? Where? It's right by the
STP and then you got, it almost looks like a odometer button. Oh, that's your top. Oh,
the top. It puts your top up. Gotcha. Got it. It's an electric motor top. Right.
And is that 33,000 miles, I see? 133. 133. Got it. Yeah, it's 133,000 on it. Well, you've kept
this car looking amazing because it looks like it's 33,000. Yeah, we took good care of it. For
sure. It's been garage kept. I never... It only sat outside two years when we first got married.
Let's open the hood, shall we? That looks great. It's got that bracing in the hood
and then you come right to the Commando 273. Yep. Wow. The only thing that isn't on it right now,
I changed the carburetor to an Edelbrock. Got it. I took the carter off and put an Edelbrock on it.
Well, let's fire it up, shall we? And we'll let it idle and I'll stand behind it and listen to it
idle. Let me listen to it. Stay in there, George, for just a second. I want you to step on the
brakes. Step on the brakes for a second, George. George, step on the brakes for a second. George,
step on the brakes for a second. There we go. Thank you. Let me let it idle. That sounds
healthy for that 273, Nancy. Go ahead, George. Give it a rev. Nice. George, that'll turn our
hair black again, that sound, right? Let's take it for a ride back. A 1965 Plymouth Satellite.
I've got George and Nancy in the front. I'm in the back. How's it feel driving this, Nancy,
with George? It's great. It is absolutely great. I love that you think that this is great. George,
how about for yourself? Driving in so many years is natural to me. I love this car. You love this
car. So it's your forever car. Tell me what this tassel is in the center of the mirror that I'm
seeing. They are our graduation tassels from our high school. How long did you meet Nancy, George?
I met her in 10th grade. 10th grade. So 10th grade and you bought this car in 65. I like
the way you make decisions. You make one decision and that's it. We graduated in 65
and I bought the car. Is that right? Yep. This is how it's going to be. You're going to love it.
Okay. Nancy, I love your personality too. You've laughed at all my jokes. Thank you very much.
Having more fun with Nancy in the car. It's a nice little road back here. Yeah,
it's away from all the nuts. And now I'm in the back, George. I appreciate it. There's people
out there. I don't think you should have a license. Okay. I'm glad you're concerned about
not the nuts. I am quite complimented. Nancy, when you go to these car shows,
what's your reaction here? I mean, when they see this car, what do people do?
Wanting to know the history of it. Yeah. How long he's had it and how he's taken care of it
all these years. What do I tell them? Just a car. That's it. The car does the stuff. That's it.
Well guys, what a great time in your car. What a great couple. So glad that you guys have had
this forever car. Thanks for being on My Car Story. You're welcome. You're quite welcome.
Thank you.
