Dr. Rob Brown, a radiologist and author of \"Unplugged,\" discusses the dangers of electropollution—the invisible radio frequency radiation emitted by wireless devices. He explains how constant exposure leads to oxidative stress and cellular damage, potentially causing chronic diseases and cancers, and urges the public to adopt preventative habits to protect their long-term health.
Now, could everyday exposure to wireless technology from cell phones or earbuds to even your Wi-Fi
routers and smart home devices be affecting our health? Joining us now is Dr. Rob Brown,
radiologist and author of the new book, Unplugged. A radiologist explores the damage caused by
electropollution and how you can prevent it. Good afternoon, Dr. Brown. Thanks so much for
joining us. Can you tell us what exactly is electropollution and would you deem it a public
health issue? When we think about pollution, most of us think about insults to our senses. So
air pollution, noise pollution, electropollution is not a type of pollution that we can sense
because we did not evolve in the presence of radio frequency radiation and other low frequencies that
we're now being exposed to with our technology. So if you turn on your cell phone and you start
to look for a network to connect to, depending on where you are, you may see anywhere from
three or five to 20 or 30 different networks that you can connect to.
Each of those networks are emitting radiation that are being penetrated through the wall of
wherever they are originating, going down the street, going through the walls of your home,
and hitting your cell phone. Unfortunately, they're also going into your body. Our bodies do not
protect ourselves from radiation frequencies of these levels and so we're being damaged
internally by all this radiation and that's what the book is about. Fascinating. Yeah, it is
compromising our health. It's just fascinating. I assume this problem is only getting worse and
worse, doctor. What exactly happens to our bodies when we're exposed to wireless radiation for
hours, I suppose, every day? That's right. Well, the radiation causes something called
oxidative stress and it's very similar to a person in a new exercise routine who goes running down
the street and starts developing shin splints. It's a stress reaction to the bone and if they
don't lighten up on their routine, the stress fracture can develop and then lead to a pathological
traumatic fracture where they need to be splinted. The same thing is happening to our cells. We start
off with a little bit of stress but that stress can then get worse and the cell can start to
malfunction and in extreme cases, the cells can even die. So, different things can happen. Membranes
can become damaged. The DNA can become damaged and lead to cancers. Depending on the organ that's
being impacted, it depends what the symptoms are going to be. So, for example, if the thyroid gland
is impacted, which is in the neck very close to if somebody holds a cell phone up to their ear,
the thyroid is going to get a lot of radiation and thyroid disease can develop. So, it seems like
it's leading to a lot of different conditions in our society. Some people call them the diseases
of civilization and it's we need to start protecting ourselves and doing what we can
to keep maintaining our health so we don't get sick. It's a frightening thought. Does it matter
if the cell phone screen is off? Most of us carry a cell phone in our pocket all day. That's right.
No, the screen, even if the screen is off, if you're not using it, the cell phone is constantly
pinging the network. And every time it pings, it's emitting radiation. And if a man puts a cell phone
in his pocket, it's affecting sperm production and testosterone production. It can also develop
something called Rouleau formation in the blood where the blood actually starts to coalesce in
aggregates and it can impede the blood flow. So, it doesn't happen in everybody, but I've done
some research and shown that it does happen in some people enough that it's a concern and people
need to be aware that even when these devices are not being used, they're still emitting radiation.
So, I tell people do not keep AirPods in your ear unless you're using them. Don't put a cell phone
in your pocket. Don't hold it up to your ear. In my book, I offer a lot of different suggestions
and I explain why, which I think is very important to empower people so they understand and not just
be given a set of instructions.
