August is one of Japan’s busiest travel seasons, marked by Obon (August 13–16), when families welcome the spirits of their ancestors back home. We join our local Bon Odori dance festival and take part in farewell fire ceremonies to guide the spirits back to the afterlife after four days of dance, food, and celebration. 🌶️ Plus, we make hot sauce and test just how much spice we can handle… turns out, not much. 😂
