In the Hampshire village of Chilbolton, one of the world’s most precious chalk streams flows quietly through the English countryside.
The River Test is not an ordinary river. Chalk streams are born from underground aquifers: rainwater slowly passes through layers of porous chalk, where it is naturally filtered before emerging through springs. This creates exceptionally clear, mineral-rich water with a cool, stable temperature throughout the year.
Only around 200 chalk streams are known worldwide, and approximately 85% of them are found in England. Their clean gravel beds, aquatic plants and oxygen-rich waters create a rare ecosystem supporting brown trout, water voles, otters, kingfishers and countless invertebrates.
