Beluga's Gimli and Yukon settling into an aquarium in Chicago.
Two of the last whales held in captivity in Canada until now.
With marine land in Niagara Falls, Ontario shut down,
the whale tanks permanently empty for the first time in 55 years.
If they couldn't get out, we are out of money, out of time,
nowhere for them to go, no realistic options.
This was the end for them, they'd have to be euthanized.
On Monday, crews used slings,
carefully lifting marine land's final six belugas one after the other.
Moved by transport truck through the fog, then flown to two aquariums in the U.S.
I will remember all my years with these animals for the rest of my life.
Whale trainer Taylor Lee Dell gave marine land's last beluga,
Tofino, an emotional goodbye hug.
I'm glad that they get to travel and explore
and have new beginnings with new people that will love them, like we love them.
With 30 whales and four dolphins removed from marine land since July,
it's the biggest rescue of its kind ever.
There's a wonderful place in Ontario.
Once a popular tourist destination, the park later drew controversy
and Canada banned whale and dolphin captivity altogether.
They've removed a remarkable number of animals and done it extremely well.
I don't think anybody could have asked for it to have gone better.
Still, one beluga, Pikachu, fell ill and died after being sent to Chicago.
The circumstances still under review.
Other destinations include SeaWorld parks,
where activists are concerned the animals will be used for breeding.
We're calling on everyone to do their part by not buying a ticket to a place like SeaWorld.
For now, the whales are said to be doing well, swimming in new surroundings.
