With only 1.5 days in Kaohsiung, it was an action packed itinerary to see as much as I could. My favorites were the Formosa Train Station, Pier 2 Art Center, Lotus Pond with the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas, Gashun Temple, Confucius Temple, and Autumn and Spring Pagodas. This city is overlooked because of Taipei, but it's well worth a visit and gives easy access to the southern tip and the Kenting National Park. I highly recommend a visit to Kaoshiung!
NEW TO OUR CHANNEL? We are Eileen and Brown Councill. Welcome to our channel and a glimpse into our life adventure! 2020 was a year of uncertainty and change (for all of us, right?), but we overcame the challenges and decided it was time to chase our dream, to sail around the world! Did I mention that we had very NO sailing experience? Before leaving Qingdao, China, our home of 4 years, we sold almost all of our earthly possessions and started our international search to find the right sailboat that we would call "home." After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia.
So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. We have much to learn as we travel the world on our floating home and we intend to document that journey and share it with you. We are so glad you have decided to join us, and we hope that you will find our story so compelling that it will inspire you to chase your dreams too!
As a viewer, we consider you to be part of our family and look forward to getting to know you. Don't hesitate to comment on our videos and ask questions. We will do our best to answer every correspondence! All we ask is that you have patience with us as we work really hard to improve our camera/video techniques and ability to tell a story. Hey guys.
Good morning.
It's an early morning here in Tsingtao and I'm on my way to get a taxi to the airport.
I'm headed to Taiwan this morning.
Brown and Everett are sleeping.
They're going to have a week together here at the house.
They can get boy time and I'm going to get travel time in.
So I hope you enjoy this video and my time in Taiwan.
Alright, well I just arrived here in Kaohsiung.
It's a beautiful day.
Hot.
Wow.
Back to summer time.
I just got myself a SIM card and for 8 days it was $4.50 so not bad.
That's Taiwanese dollars and now I'm going to head on to the NRT, the train that goes
downtown and take that to the hotel.
So it'll be a little adventure.
Here we go.
My ticket.
I'm just arriving at my hotel right here, Papua, looking fabulous.
Alright, I'm off to find the Heart of Love River and the Jilin Night Market.
Okay, so this is really interesting.
The sidewalks are used to park on so really no room to walk because the cars are literally
pulled up to the front of their houses so pedestrians, I guess, are expected to walk
on the side of the road but the side of the road is also blocked by motorcycles and mopeds
so you just have to hope you don't get hit.
I love that all the people in these have hearts as heads.
So the Heart of Love River is a new landmark.
It's basically an artificial lake divided into two parts, the east and the west.
And it's just a beautiful park with great bridges and walkways that are shaped beautifully
and they light it up at night.
So apparently this is a number one, number two on the must-visit list coming to Kaohsiung.
Wow, this just thrills me to no end but I'm absolutely sure there's no chance they're
going to allow me in without a card.
Oh my goodness.
I can't even tell you how much I miss Costco.
Gosh, this just makes me want to cry.
I feel like it's back to summer but I can't have any.
Those of you who are in America should be very, very thankful.
Very thankful for Costco in Kirkland.
And they're even getting into the Christmas spirit a little bit early.
Like three months early.
I thought it was bad in America but welcome to Taiwan.
To get to the ferry out to Xiaoliuchu Island and today my goal is the Formosa train station.
Climbing Shishan Mountain and getting to visit the Lotus Pond but it's super hot.
It's like 100 degrees and 100% humidity so we'll see how far we get.
So this is the beautiful dome in the Formosa train station.
Absolutely stunning.
Beautiful.
So this metro is really easy to use.
It's fabulous.
I'm headed to Zhaoying so that is 25 cents.
So I go here to put my coin in and out pops my little blue token and that's it.
As easy as that.
These are the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas.
You can see the Tiger Pagoda on the left and the Dragon on the right.
They're built relatively recently in 1976.
All right I'm up at the top of the Tiger Pagoda.
Not a little out of breath.
Beautiful view.
So I did miss that there was a sign down there that said
there's good luck walking into the mouth of one and out of the mouth of the other.
And bad luck if you go into one first.
I think the tiger was the one that you have bad luck and I did walk in the tiger.
So oops.
No idea what's going on in here.
We'll find out.
I think she's burning paper money to send to her ancestors.
I believe that's what she's doing.
Maybe I can redeem myself by going in the mouth of this dragon.
I think I'll take the alternative path out rather than going back inside the dragon.
It's probably 100 degrees today and it's not air-conditioned inside that beast.
So it's just nicer to be out in the open.
This is Dragon Rock Cold Spring.
Clearly a favorite with the locals.
So I just arrived at the Pier 2 Art Center.
This was a group of warehouses that in the early 70s when
Kaohsiung changed from an industrial city to a service city,
these warehouses were abandoned and the artists started putting installations around
and the city eventually accepted that they could have the
warehouses to be able to use as art space and they dedicated it as an art center.
So it's called Pier 2 and let's go check it out.
Wow it's been a super great day.
The Taiwanese people are so nice, really helpful, incredibly generous and kind
and so being here is a real gift.
Learning a lot from them.
This art district is super cool.
Loving all the installations.
Even just outside, haven't gotten inside at all.
This is a very cool area.
Anyway, more art installations.
Here we come.
Hello, good morning.
It's travel day and I am on the way to the bus station right now.
I'm leaving Kaohsiung.
I was supposed to go to Lambe Island but the hurricane or the typhoon that's coming
has canceled all the boats so I can't get to the island and I was only going to be there two days.
So I'm going to head to Kenting National Park earlier than anticipated which I'm excited about
and so I'm on my way to the bus station.
The bus is about a three-hour ride and it costs about 10-12 US dollars to head down to Kenting.
So I'm looking forward to that and looking forward to a great day
and hopefully not too much rain from the typhoon.
This is my little bus station.
Curious as to what the bus is going to be like.
I'm looking forward to the bus ride.
I'm guessing there aren't going to be any Westerners on the bus with me.
