Now it is the case that has gripped hip-hop fans and lingered in the public imagination
for decades.
And now, Dwayne Keefy D. Davis has been found guilty of orchestrating the 1996 killing of
the rap icon Tupac Shakur.
The verdict finally bringing a measure of resolution to the case.
Davis, who's now 63, convicted of a single count of murder with a deadly weapon, could
now be sentenced to life in prison.
Well, earlier we spoke to our correspondent in Los Angeles, Wasim Kornei.
The speed of this verdict was particularly striking.
Jurors deliberated for less than three hours before reaching their decision, and that was
far from a foregone conclusion, because prosecutors presented no DNA evidence, no murder weapon,
no phone records, and no independent eyewitness confirming that Dwayne Davis was in that white
Cadillac from which the shots were fired.
Instead, the case relied heavily on Davis' own words.
In interviews with police departments both in Los Angeles and Las Vegas, in public appearances,
in podcasts and in his own memoir, Davis repeatedly said he was inside that Cadillac on that night
in September 1996.
He obtained the gun and he tossed it in the backseat from which Orlando Anderson, his
nephew, then fired the fatal shots against Tupac Shakur.
The defense argued those accounts were inconsistent, that Davis initially lied to protect himself
from prosecution in a separate case and then continued to lie to build his reputation and
sell books, his memoir that came out in 2019.
But jurors rejected that explanation and accepted the prosecutor's argument that although inconsistent,
the central elements of Davis' story remained the same over the years.
And importantly, under Nevada law, prosecutors did not have to prove that Davis fired the
shots himself.
In fact, he was never accused of killing Tupac, but by providing the weapon, by organizing
the attack and authorizing the attack, he was just as responsible as the gunman himself.
Davis now faces life in prison.
