Giant tennis ball-sized hail pounded Italy and Switzerland as powerful supercell thunderstorms unleashed destructive winds, torrential rain and intense lightning. The extreme weather damaged cars, homes, buildings and infrastructure across northern Italy and Switzerland, leaving communities facing widespread storm damage.

In Italy, a violent hailstorm and severe thunderstorms struck Lombardy, with Cremona among the hardest-hit cities. A powerful supercell brought giant hail and destructive winds, injuring 43 people and damaging around 10,000 cars. Thousands of trees were brought down, roofs were damaged and historic buildings were hit as the storm tore through the city.

Large hail also struck Brescia and surrounding areas, where hailstones were reported around tennis-ball size. Severe weather spread across other parts of northern Italy, including Piacenza, Vernasca, Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia, damaging vehicles, homes, solar panels, vineyards and farmland.

Switzerland was also battered by a powerful supercell thunderstorm. Zurich, Aargau and Solothurn were among the hardest-hit regions, with giant hailstones locally reaching around 6 centimeters. Severe thunderstorms produced destructive winds, torrential rain and intense lightning as the storm moved across northern Switzerland.

Around Zurich and Winterthur, large hail damaged cars, roofs, windows and building façades, while dozens of people were injured. In Aargau, powerful winds damaged major electrical infrastructure and caused power disruptions. Solothurn and Schaffhausen also reported storm damage, fallen trees and dangerous winds.

The powerful hailstorms across Italy and Switzerland caused widespread damage to vehicles, homes, infrastructure and farmland. From Cremona and Brescia to Zurich and Aargau, giant hail and severe supercell thunderstorms left dramatic scenes of destruction across parts of Europe.
