How did a massive ice and rock collapse unleash Nepal’s deadly flash flood? This video explains how a catastrophic glacier collapse high in the Himalayas triggered an ice-and-rock avalanche, debris flow, and devastating flash flood through Nepal’s mountain river system.

Satellite imagery shows that a massive collapse involving bedrock and glacier ice near Langtang Lirung sent an enormous avalanche of ice, rock, boulders, and debris toward the valley below. The disaster swept into the Lhende Khola before surging through the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems.

The resulting Nepal flash flood devastated communities around Rasuwa, Timure, Rasuwagadhi, and Syapru Besi before spreading destruction far downstream. Water levels reportedly rose by as much as nine meters within just 30 minutes, while the disaster altered river channels more than 100 kilometers from the collapse zone.

Hundreds of people were killed across Nepal and Tibet, while many others remained missing as rescue operations continued. More than 90,000 people were affected by the disaster, including local residents, workers, tourists, trekkers, and pilgrims.

Homes, villages, roads, bridges, vehicles, power projects, hydropower facilities, and communication networks were destroyed or severely damaged. Some mountain communities became isolated after roads and bridges were swept away, forcing rescue teams to use helicopters to reach survivors and deliver emergency assistance.

Nepal’s Army, Police, and Armed Police Force launched extensive search and rescue operations across the affected region as emergency crews searched rivers, settlements, and massive debris fields for survivors and missing people.
