Video Summary
AI GeneratedThe narrator spends a night in the forest, challenging themselves to find and build a shelter within a fallen tree. Despite forgetting several essential items, including their glasses and a pillow, they successfully construct a cozy lean-to using a tarp and natural surroundings, concluding that the enclosed structure provided a surprising sense of security and warmth.
Tonight I'm spending the night in this fallen tree.
A few hours ago I walked in the forest with no idea where I was going to sleep tonight.
I had one goal though, find a fallen tree that I could stay the night in.
I'm in the absolute thick of it right now.
So, how did I end up here?
Let's go back to the start, shall we?
The forest is so thick here.
I don't know where I'm going to find a fallen tree.
Currently they're all pretty steady.
I found this little clearing.
And you know what? If there was a fallen tree here, it would be perfect.
Because I've got a little bit of a view as well.
I can see the sky, which means I can see the stars.
I can see a tree just through there, but it looks too thin.
It seems to just be a really thin tree that's fallen, which isn't ideal.
I'm looking for something relatively thick, quite solid.
No major tree fall around, because obviously I don't want to be obliterated by a tree.
And then I want it to be relatively flat ground as well, because otherwise I'm not going to have a good sleep.
And there's no point if I'm not going to sleep well.
Well, there are certainly no shortage of fallen trees in this forest.
But I'm not sure I like the amount of fallen trees just in this area.
Look at all of these.
This seems to be quite boggy, unfortunately.
Every so often, when it's a bigger gust of wind, I can actually hear the trees creaking and moving too much.
Just stumble across these two trees here.
And you know what? It actually might be really good.
It's quite open in this area. There's not too much going on.
But because there's not too many trees around, it's a little bit more open.
It's less likely that a tree will fall on me.
I think I'm pretty much set on this spot, you know.
It is really nice.
I've got a wall here, but I've also got the possibility of making a wall there.
Having a bit more of a shelter around me actually will be quite nice.
So, finding a tree was actually the relatively easy part.
Now the work is going to happen.
I've borrowed my mum's gardening gloves.
I'm going to try and figure out what the plan is.
Now I've got my top and I've got some rope.
String rope, whatever you want to call it.
I've also got a pocket knife, so if I need to cut anything, I can.
Okay, first things first.
I'm going to get some of these rocks out of the way.
There is no chance of me shifting this big rock.
It's not going anywhere.
So, instead, it's going to turn into my kitchen.
And I'm going to put myself about here.
Now it is a little bit bumpy, but I can fix that very easily.
So it's alright.
The rocks here seem to be pretty sturdy.
I'm going to shove all of the twigs out of the way.
Make it a bit more clean on the ground.
The ground is already looking so much better.
I've managed to clear it.
The majority is cleared anyway.
But now I need to make sure it's actually wide enough and flat enough to put my sleeping mat on.
I don't have much to put under my sleeping mat.
I have got a big tarp.
3.5 by 3.5 metres.
Which is quite big for a tarp.
So, I've got plenty to use as a ground sheet as well as a wall.
But I do need also a roof as well because I don't know what the weather is going to do, as always.
And then, after that, I think we can just fill in the gap under that tree so that we keep a little bit more heating.
Just pack it up with some moss, some soil.
That'll keep the wind out, keep the heat in.
Whoa, midges are attacking me right now.
Oh, they have definitely found me.
Anyway, I'm pretty sure I'm done with step one.
If you can see, the floor is nice and flat.
It's nice and clear.
There's no massive rocks in my way.
I can comfortably put my sleeping mat and sleeping bag there.
I have got my bivvy.
I'll probably put that down.
Just to protect my mat a little bit more from all of the twigs or the little rocks that I've left over.
But apart from that, I think we're on to filling in that back wall and then getting the tarp up.
I'm going to re-spray myself with smidge.
I hate it.
This is home for tonight.
I think it's looking pretty good so far.
All of this is perfect.
I think I'm going to probably lie like this.
I think my mat would go really nicely here.
That's my kitchen.
That's my back wall.
This is my other wall.
This is my door.
Welcome.
I have got the DV Helmet 3.5 by 3.5 tarp.
Now, I think it's about time we get it set up.
I'm really thirsty right now though.
I might stop, have a quick drink and then carry on.
Bye then.
Well, it's almost time to set the shelter up.
It is kind of going dark right now.
I don't know what time it is.
I think time's got away from me again.
It is about 20 to 9 right now.
You know what?
I've been walking about the forest for that long and now I've finally found somewhere to set off after chatting with some random person for an hour.
I can't help but chat.
Anyway, time's got away from me.
You know what though?
I am definitely ready for a drink.
I've got my trusty water drop reusable bottle with me.
You've probably seen me use them before.
I've got two.
I've got this big bad boy.
He's massive.
That is 1.4 litres.
This is just a simple 1 litre bottle but I've also got with me my favourite thing.
It's the water drop micro drinks.
So, I've got the strawberry flavour with me.
I've also got iced tea.
They're very good.
I've got cherry boost but they've got 90mg of caffeine in them.
So, considering it's almost my bedtime, I'm probably not going to go with them right now.
Something that is perfect for right now after doing all of this moving is some recharge.
This has got electrolytes, vitamins, zinc.
It's brilliant for you.
The best part is they're tiny.
Look at that.
You can just chuck them in your bag.
I did bring the packet with me because I kind of wanted to show you.
You just put one of these little cubes in your drink.
Probably between 400-600ml.
Half of this.
So, there's about 500ml in there right now.
In it goes.
All you have to do now is give it a shake and then you've got something that is going to recharge you.
Their little sugar free hydration cubes are brilliant.
I use them all the time but strawberry recharge is literally my favourite.
Anyway, if you do fancy trying them out, they're actually celebrating their 10 year anniversary right now.
So, I've got a discount code for you as always.
It is going to be on the screen.
Link in the description as well.
It's katyromes10y if you're interested.
It can get you up to 30% off.
Anyway, built it all by myself.
I feel like I'm dribbling.
Let's open this up and then see what we're working with.
Right, so my general idea was to do a little kind of lean to situation.
I'm thinking go from here to over there but it's kind of a lean to.
And then prop it up maybe in this section so I've got more of a stand up area.
And then we should have a sleeping section, a bit more of a raised section so I can cook.
And then that back wall.
I'm going to have to figure that out.
I have finally set up the top.
It looks pretty cool.
I've put it so that I have an open wall here just because then I've got easy access in and out.
And then I've folded this bottom bit under so that I have a ground sheet.
I was a little bit worried about all the twigs, all the rocks just ruining my mat.
So I've decided to fold it under instead and then I've got a bit more protection.
Other than that though, it is all set up inside.
I think it looks really good actually.
I'm going to really quickly set up my sleeping mat, my sleeping bag, all that jazz and then we can get cooking.
I'm on steak, potato salad and coleslaw.
I'm very excited about it.
Not forgotten anything for a long time, but conveniently I've managed to forget my pillow.
That is probably the worst thing I could have forgotten, actually.
The pump sack is built to hold air in, even when you're pushing on it.
So if I can tie off the ends, I should be able to create my own inflatable pillow, I think.
Let's see if my theory is correct.
I think I've done it.
If I've actually done this, please consider this my application for Genius of the Year.
Thank you.
Okay, it's very slimy.
That's a pillow.
I've actually done a makeshift pillow.
I don't think my brain has worked today.
I've got my contact lenses in, right.
You know what I have to do with them?
I have to take them out and put my glasses on so I can see.
I can't see, I've not got my glasses.
I can't sleep in my contact lenses.
I don't have my glasses.
I don't have anywhere to put my contact lenses.
I cannot drive without glasses.
I'm not legally allowed.
How am I meant to get home?
That is the most stupid thing I've ever done.
I don't know how I've forgotten so much stuff, but I didn't forget my food and that's what's important.
Let's get cooking.
I've borrowed my mum's pot.
Isn't that awesome?
I have got steak.
It's been in my bag for a long time, so I think it's about time we actually get cooking.
British beef ribeye steak.
Now this cost me eight great British pounds, so it better be nice.
I've got a little pot of leftovers at a barbecue.
This has got coleslaw and potato salad in it from the barbecue.
I'm going to let that chill out for a minute.
I'm going to make myself a cup of tea as well.
Okay, I have a pocket knife and I have a spork.
I don't think either of which are really steak friendly, so I'm just going to start nibbling.
Oh, it's a bit hot.
Nothing quite like ripping into a steak after you've built your own shelter.
I'm having a great time right now.
I know I've forgotten a lot of stuff.
I don't have a knife, nor a pillow, or glasses.
I won't be able to see when I take my contact lenses out, which isn't the most ideal thing when you're alone in the woods.
But you're living your life.
I won't make the same mistake again, that's for sure.
I'm going to just eat my steak and then I'll be back.
My mug is the star of the show.
I've actually been letting my water cool down a bit, so it's drinking-ish temperature.
It's almost time to get cosy.
I am a little bit chilly out here actually, but I'm going to snuggle up inside of my sleeping bag in a minute.
Try and get cosy and we'll see if I can actually spend the night sleeping in a tree.
Well, I have made a house.
It might not be the prettiest house, but you know what? It'll do.
Right, well I'm going to try and get some sleep.
I officially can't see anything.
I've taken my contact lenses out.
I can see shapes.
For now though, I'm going to sleep.
And we'll see if my pillow works.
Most importantly, we'll see if I can actually be cosy and have a comfortable sleep in a fallen tree.
I think it's a really interesting idea.
I've wanted to do it for ages, but I've just never done it.
I'll see you all in the morning.
Night!
My hair is an absolute stake.
Well, it's actually raining right now, which I did not expect.
It's about half past six right now.
I've just woken up and my pillow did not work.
It was worth a shot, but it was unaffected.
Cheers.
I've got a frothy coffee.
Well, all that's left for me to do this morning is to pack away.
In terms of sleeping in a fallen tree, I had quite a good time actually.
It was a little bit of a stress putting everything up, figuring it out.
But I think if I ever did it again, I've got experience now, don't I?
I slept well, even without a pillow.
I was comfortable.
I felt safe, weirdly.
Normally, I feel a little bit weird when I'm sleeping out in the open in the woods.
I think having a wall, another wall, and only one opening is actually really nice.
It was really cosy and really warm last night.
And you know what?
I managed to stay quite nudge free.
I'll take that as a massive accomplishment.
I am all packed up and ready to go.
Leaving nothing behind, obviously.
Leave no trace.
It's really not that difficult.
But that is it for today's adventure.
I've had a nice chill morning, just waiting for the rain to pass.
If you do want to check out Waterdrop, I'll leave the discount code on the screen and the link in the description as well.
And I will see you all on our next little adventure.
Happy roaming!
Bye!
