Frank Lampard Clutch Performance vs. Wigan Athletic - Premier League 2008/09 (H)

It's all about containment, and certainly for Chelsea, they may have to be patient. Nobody finding it easy to break Wigan down right now. Lampard, he was caught there by Sharna, who's been recalled to the side today. I wonder if there's an early yellow card here for Sharna. Last weekend, when that would be the case as an amnesty after this weekend, all he's got to do is avoid a yellow today. I think he's trying to take the top of the ball, but... Sharna's being deployed a bit further forward than we might have thought Now they've barely had a serious attack so far. Certainly a case of after the Lord Mayor show, following the Champions League. Another of the defenders nearly scoring. Pressure and dominance tell. You have to feel that Chelsea... First concerted spell of Chelsea pressure. Lampard goes short to Ashley Cole. Played back again, Salomon Kalou. Lampard, stands it up towards the back post. And Terry with the... I just wonder if Chris Kirtland could have come for this one as Lampard hangs it up. I think he had a little wonder, can I come for that? Terry certainly struck it beautifully as it sat up for him. This one here, I just wonder if Kirtland could have come and got a fist on to it. It's cleared into the central area. Strike on the edge of the box by Terry. Now here's Lampard. Drogba. Wigan are rocking a bit at the moment and Lampard has cut that one out. Lampard. Alex is the target, good header down, but... Ashley Cole. Lampard, very clever. Very few are cut out by the first defender. Having said that, this next one probably will be. It isn't. Oh, and this time the header from Anelka. Chelsea go up the other end and score, and that normally is the way it is at the big clubs, the big grounds. Or even Mido who's out injured today. Lampard. Trying to measure it for Ashley Cole. Great ball, Lampard in space, Frank Lampard! Can he finish it? Nearly! Oh, and a wonderful chance for... Frank Lampard at the space here because Katamuul had been dragged inside. Offside given. Chelsea have suddenly turned it on since they scored. Totally dominant at the moment. It's funny that who's hitting goalkeeper? Got the wall to beat first, though. It is Lampard, he's done exactly that again. Kalou. Ashley Cole. Lampard in space, he can drive from there. As he loves to do. Looking for the right ball, Drogba! Oh, brilliant piece of defending, tight as... Football all in. The minute Lampard gets goalside of Katamuul, Wigan are in trouble, lovely diagonal run from Drogba. Central defender himself as his manager. Lovely little disguised pass here from Lampard. Great run as well from... Nicely done by Mancien, appreciated by the crowd. Again, Drogba was found by... To Anelka, good football. Lampard, curling it in! Right area, no finish. They gave Lampard all the room in the world on the right-hand side. Once again they got him on the ball where it really counts, in the last third of the pitch. Instrumental in everything Chelsea are doing at the moment, Lampard. Drogba, lovely little flick on again, Lampard to Anelka. One man who hasn't been quiet is Terry, and here's another one, Lampard. He's been everywhere in this second half. ...to end the argument. Lampard, Ashley Cole, Lampard wants it back. Ashley Cole again, it's intricate. Delighted to see Katamuul go off. Lampard, good vision, Drogba! Is there another opportunity? Feed it in for Anelka, but Bramble is absolutely watertight at the front post. Terrific defending by the centre-back, and not for the first time. It's given Chelsea here the chance to spring, led by Lampard. Malkiot strong again. That's frustration from Frank Lampard. Almost got himself into the channel there. Lampard tries to find Drogba, no flag. Bramble is... Going to be three minutes of added time as Ballack plays it on towards Lampard! What a vital goal there! And Mr Reliable, Frank Lampard, has come up with it, and he sits stone-faced through it all. He has to generate all the pace here. There's no real pace in the ball as it's flicked on, he has to generate all the pace. He's got his hands up on Malkiot's back, I don't think there's a great deal in it. But he does well to get the power on it. Well, I'm not even convinced... It'll be a talking point, but Frank Lampard has the goal, it's his 15th of the season that. Lampard. Drogba, it's over, Chelsea have the win. Big celebrations at Stamford Bridge. A vital goal from Frank Lampard, right at the death with a header.
