A landmark Supreme Court ruling has dealt a devastating blow to Donald Trump’s attempt to impose sweeping global tariffs through emergency presidential authority. In a 6–3 decision led by Chief Justice John Roberts, the Court ruled that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act did not authorize Trump to impose tariffs of unlimited amount, duration, and scope.

The legal battle centered on Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs, which targeted imports from countries around the world. Trump argued that trade deficits and other international threats constituted an emergency allowing him to act without new legislation from Congress. The Court rejected that interpretation, concluding that such extraordinary power required clear congressional authorization—and none existed.
