#LetitiaWright Premieres Directorial Debut at South London Film Festival While Filming New Avengers Blockbuster!
Letitia Wright, globally recognized for her breakout role as Shuri in Marvel’s #BlackPanther, is currently in London filming the highly anticipated #AvengersDoomsday. But while the MCU prepares for its next big chapter, Letitia is unveiling a new side of her artistry: director.
The film, a powerful and poignant exploration of knife crime in London, marks a deeply personal project for Letitia who has long been vocal about youth violence and the need for systemic change. The film draws on real-life experiences offering an unflinching look at a pressing issue through a lens of empathy and authenticity.
Balancing her Marvel commitments with the demands of directing has been no small feat. “It’s been an intense but rewarding journey,” Wright said. “Filming Avengers: Doomsday during the day and editing Highway to the Moon at night pushed me creatively in ways I didn’t expect. But telling this story—bringing these voices to light—was something I had to do.”
With the eyes of Hollywood and the UK film scene watching closely, Wright is proving she's not only a leading performer but also an emerging force behind the camera. Highway to the Moon isn’t just a directorial debut—it’s a statement.
I adore her and she is singing anything she can't do. It has been a minute.
Thank you so much for making time today to speak to me.
You're doing a secret project. Well, it's not even secret because Pedro Pascal has told everybody.
The Russo brothers have kind of said.
But what I don't understand is how you do an Avengers movie in London.
And no fans have managed to get behind the scenes pictures.
Oh man, we have a great security team.
Because of seriousness?
How are you?
I'm good, thank you. How are you?
I'm very well. You look really well.
Thank you.
You said on Instagram a little while ago, this is my soft girl era.
Your face is like, did I say that?
Yeah, I did.
Are you still in that era?
I'm transitioning into a super cool era.
I'm always redefining myself.
South London Film Festival.
I was talking to Kiri, the festival director.
And he says, you know, she's submitted her work before.
And there's no, like, she's a big star.
And I was like, is she right?
He's like, I know, but she's so humble.
And you're on the lineup amongst loads of brand new talent.
How does that feel?
It feels good.
This, you know, myself, 316, and we present my collaborative team that helped me make this film.
We felt like South London Film Festival was the place to start.
Just the history of their support for my films at 316,
Things I Never Told My Father was one of my first films that I wrote and produced,
and that was accepted here.
So I just felt like following that line of a great team that supports me was important.
But yeah, just having this moment, I haven't taken it in properly,
but tomorrow I think it's going to sink in a little bit more.
I'm always here watching other people's projects and movies and supporting.
Yeah.
So to have my opportunity to show my work.
For you, this was very personal.
Tell me what this journey's been like for you and getting those actors as well.
Yeah, Kenya Sandy, Lamar Waves, new fresh talent that never acted before I'm introducing in this film.
Yeah, it's a personal journey.
It was just a moment that I felt my heart was breaking, basically, for my friend,
my friend Naya, who lost her brother, Junior.
And I know this kid, right?
No one's perfect, but he's someone's son.
And he was stabbed.
And just the process of that really just left me a little bit confused.
Because when you see things from far away, you kind of move on.
You're like, I see it and you move on.
But when it's right in front of you and it's so close, you can't turn away.
And then I saw the news about Harry Azuka and I was walking home and I just stood in the road.
And I was so, I was absolutely, like, shocked.
Because this is someone who is, you know, he's a model.
He's inspiring.
He has great friends.
And just to research a little bit into what happened and just a disagreement between two friends.
That could have easily just been ironed out.
Causes life to be ended.
And that just took me into this place of this story that I really felt God gave to me.
To look at the middle ground of where they're held, where their spirits are held.
And what happens if they all gather together?
Would they have brotherhood?
Would they be processing what's happened to them on earth?
And the aim is for them to see the film and to hear the message and to say, I don't even want to be in the in-between.
I want to be on earth and I want to have brotherhood and unity here.
I want to be able to fulfill my life fully here before I'm naturally meant to leave.
Not by force.
And I think, yeah, it's just my way of giving back to what I was feeling and channeling what I was feeling.
And hopefully that resonates.
I think it will. I think it's really important.
Yesterday I was having conversations with actors and they were saying, everything that's going on in the world right now, we want to speak, but we're so afraid.
And they were like, I'm so scared because my publicist says this, this one says this.
And even for me as a presenter, freelancer, journalist, you put something up and then it can be taken in so many different ways.
You're doing this in the best way possible.
I'm just sitting here with you and I just feel like you care about something when you're doing it in your art.
A place that you can control how that narrative gets presented.
Is that a conscious decision you've made?
Because I know in the past you've always been that person that speaks up for things that have to be spoken about.
Yeah, I guess it's a natural thing to me because as an actress, my vessel is this, right?
You see my body, my voice, everything.
So when I care about something, I put it into my art.
I connect with art and I allow myself to be a vessel for it.
I felt it was the only natural thing to use what I was feeling to write a story first.
It started as a treatment, then it went to a script, then it went to directing it and making it a reality.
Yeah, that's my way of speaking about it.
It may not be as clear to other people as I would want it to be.
The intentions might be misunderstood.
But I know the root of my intention and I know what I'm trying to do with it.
But yes, it's important for me to use my art to speak about things that I care about.
This is the first time I'm doing that.
There is a risk involved because again, someone's going to watch it and take something absolutely different to what I intended.
But art is subjective.
Exactly. And I think if you start a conversation, bravo.
That is what you're supposed to do.
And the fact that you are doing it willingly without saying, hey, I'm just here enjoying my life.
But actually saying I care about society and what's going on in the world.
I'm going to use the power that I have in my way.
And you do do it in such a beautiful way.
You have this aura. I don't know what it is.
I feel like we're best friends. You have this energy exchange.
Anytime I meet you, I feel lighter, but I also feel more in touch with myself.
And I feel like you've done the work, you're doing the work.
You must be, because to be like this with the schedule and the life that you're living would be like crazy.
How is she doing it? Are you doing that work?
Is it just having these beautiful people around you?
Your team doesn't change by the way, which I love.
Yeah, I do the work.
If I want to present stories like Highway to the Moon, I want lives to be changed.
I have to be doing the work on the other end.
So I take therapy very seriously.
I take my relationship with God very seriously.
Even when I'm a mess, God is like, come back here.
And I try to surround myself with great people too that are kind, that represent me well.
But yes, it's all about doing that internal work and have great friends.
I don't always get it right, but I always aim to redefine myself to get it right.
My Enneagram number is like a number three.
My personality number is a number three.
Overachiever, but in every way.
I try to conduct myself in a way that I want to be seen and grow always.
I'm always growing.
It's interesting, I was at the Stiller's premiere.
Congratulations, I know that's your family.
And I saw you and I was like, it's Letitia.
We were doing interviews and I was like, no, she's sliding.
But you know what I loved about the moment?
The fans.
And you were like, I can't not do pictures with fans.
So you just come to do that and then you slid in.
And I was like, she's always so there to support.
I've been a supporter of Ryan's work way before I even became a part of the Black Panther team.
Fruitvale Station, Creed, some of his short films that I was studying back in the day.
He's a powerhouse and he's a great human being.
And being there, I was trying to, as best as possible, not make it about me.
Because the whole carpet was turning into a Letitia Wright fest.
And I was like, nah, man.
I was just like, please.
But yeah, I love showing up to support my people.
Ryan is a big advocate for my talent, for Michael B, for Daniel.
He's just a great human being.
So being there and supporting him, it's easy to me.
Did you enjoy the film?
Of course.
I watched it twice.
I have to watch it again.
It was great, man.
Yeah.
And final couple of things.
You're currently working, obviously, on the new Avengers doomsday.
And I was saying to you earlier, I don't know how they're keeping it all so secret.
But when the chairs, they did a live stream to show the chairs who was going to be in it.
And I think, who was just before you?
Oh my God, who was just, I know it was Bucky, Sebastian Stan.
Yeah, Sebastian Stan.
It was Sebastian Stan, then Latisha Wright was like, yes.
Yeah.
Obviously, you knew at that point.
When you saw all those names, what were you thinking?
Because I'm sure you didn't know who else was going to be in it.
Again, with Avengers, it's just an ensemble of greatness.
So I was just really excited to just be a part of it.
I've been a part of it before, but in a more smaller way.
And now I have a little bit, a little bit more.
So yeah, just a great family.
Literally coming off set from filming yesterday, putting my best into it,
working with the resources is always amazing.
Just a great team.
Okay, one thing I'm going to say.
You're not going to tell me, but there's a fan theory.
Okay.
The fan theory is there are two Black Panthers.
One is you.
Okay.
And the other Black Panther is T'Challa's son, that little cutie.
Is it Divine?
Divine, yeah.
Divine's obviously a kid, he can't have grown up.
That's my son.
That's my baby boy.
Will there be two Black Panthers?
I can't say anything.
There's literally like, I'm so, I've sown to secrecy.
I've literally like, I can't say anything.
All I can say is that I did my filming yesterday and it was great.
We're having a great time.
Yes, I'm so excited to see it.
And John Boyega, this morning I saw a variety of variety two years ago.
And he said to you, he said to you, you, me, Daniel Kaluuya,
we need to do a film together.
We're two years on.
We do.
What's happening?
Listen, the Right Project's going to find its way to us.
Those are my brothers.
You know, I'm seeing Daniel in a couple of weeks, doing some plays,
whatever he's doing.
Wherever Daniel is, I'm following him.
It's going to happen.
I don't know when, I don't know how, but it's going to happen.
Always a pleasure.
She's in the West End, Lynette Linton, who's fantastic.
She did Shifters with Heather and Tosin.
I think you're part of Little Sims.
Yeah, Meltdown, yeah.
People know where they can see you.
Yeah, Little Sims is doing a talk with myself, Tosin Cole, Fadi.
We're just coming together just to support that panel
and share our journey.
Anything for Sims, you know, so it's free, it's dope.
She's really giving back to the community.
So, yeah, calm down.
And theatre, you're going back to where you started.
Yes, theatre at The Bush and then next year at The National.
My debut there.
I'm just grinding.
I know, you are, you are.
Soft girl era, definitely is not soft girl era.
It's grinding, grinding, grinding era.
Always a pleasure.
Thank you.
I adore you. Thank you so much.
Thank you.
