Explained: What Caused the Nepal Flash Floods?

At least 160 people have been killed and hundreds are missing following flash floods in Nepal and Tibet.

Officials said 403 people are missing, including 341 foreign nationals from countries including the UK, the US, India and Malaysia, after a flash flood hit the Rasuwa region of Nepal on Wednesday.

The Nepal Tourism Board said 33 UK citizens, including a 13-year-old girl, and two Irish nationals are among those unaccounted for.

Among them are three men aged 65, 64, and 52, and seven women between 44 and 65, according to travel logs obtained by the Press Association.

Tour operator Alpine Eco Trek, which offers guided tours and expeditions in Nepal, said earlier on Wednesday that 12 British nationals on its tour across the Nepal-Tibet border had not been located.

Four of its Nepalese tour guides are missing as well.

“I feel so sad. We are just thinking about what to do next. We are in pain at the moment, deep pain," said Kumar Adhikari, the manager of Alpine Eco Trek.

At least 28 police officials are also among the hundreds missing, Nepal police spokesperson Abi Narayan Kafle said. More than 40 people are injured and receiving treatment in hospital, police confirmed.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) initially reported a magnitude 4.4 earthquake early Wednesday, about 41 miles north of Kathmandu, near the border, but later said the shaking was due to a a 5.2 magnitude landslide.

Nearby, in Tibet's Gyirong County, a mudslide killed at least three people and left 265 missing, China's state broadcaster CCTV said.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham said the Government will do “everything we can” to support British nationals in Nepal.

Calling the scenes "devastating", he said: “My thoughts are with all those affected, including the families and loved ones of British nationals missing in this tragedy."
