This is extremely good news for the Bills...
Aug 26, 2026
This is extremely good news for the Buffalo Bills as Josh
Allen has seemingly found another weapon on offense and
believe it or not.
It's a fourth round rookie.
That's caught his attention.
That's right today.
We are talking about Skylar Bell.
We're going to talk about who he is what he brings to this
Bills offense and why both Josh Allen and Joe Brady spoke
today about what he can bring to the table and what they
are excited to see out of Skylar Bell.
But first welcome in everybody to Bills Digest.
I'm Ben Volker.
We talk everything Buffalo Bills here at Bills Digest.
There's one more preseason game left to go and then we are
hitting the NFL season in full force.
So if you don't want to miss anything about the Buffalo Bills
make sure to hit subscribe because we are going to be talking
about everything relating to this team.
Okay, so preseason there's one more game left.
And most of the starters probably aren't playing.
Josh Allen is definitely not playing.
We got confirmation of that today, but there is one player
that I'm really looking forward to seeing at preseason against
the Steelers on Thursday and that is Skylar Bell and it seems
like I'm not the only one because this is what Josh Allen
had to say about his new receiver today.
He said that he's doing a great job.
He's flying around right now doing things the right way.
He continues to make plays and then Alex Braske added here
at the end Bell might see his first NFL action versus Pittsburgh
on Thursday.
So yes, Skylar Bell hasn't played at all during the preseason
because he's been dealing with a groin injury.
Now Skylar Bell, it seems like shares the sentiment about
being able to play with Josh Allen and play in a dynamic
Bills offense because this is what Skylar Bell said in return.
Very quick, very simple.
Man, I felt like a kid in a candy store.
Now look Josh Allen.
He's a team team first guy.
That's known.
He's not going to go into a presser and talk trash about
his teammates, but it does seem like Josh Allen sees some
potential in this guy.
And why is that and also who is Skylar Bell?
That is really the main question.
If you haven't really been keeping up with the Bills this
entire offseason.
This is Skylar Bell.
He is a fourth-round rookie that the Bills took out of Connecticut
this past draft back in April.
And here you can see just a few quick stats that the Bills
published about Skylar Bell back in April.
He led the team at Connecticut with 101 receptions and over
1,000 or 1,200 receiving yards 13 receiving touchdowns, not
bad for a college season.
And he even led the entire FBS in a hundred yard receiving
games, which is pretty impressive for a fourth round pick.
Now, there was a ton of talk leading up to the draft.
Obviously they traded for DJ more.
That was their big wide receiver acquisition, but there was
also discussion that the Bills needed to draft a rookie in
the first round.
Obviously a rookie receiver in the first round.
Obviously that did not happen.
There was talks.
Maybe they were going to take draft a Casey Conception that
didn't work.
They ended up trading back out of the first round because
that's Brandon Beans mo and they ended up going with Skylar
Bell in the fourth round as their their receiver pick.
He was their fourth pick in the draft and he was the guy that
they wanted at receiver.
Now Skylar Bell is really one of his main comparisons in the
draft was to a guy like Khalil Shakir a guy that kind of can
do it all a lot of people were saying that he might be another
key in the Joe Brady bubble screen show that we saw last year
than that.
It was just going to be more of the same.
But when asked what when Bell was asked what he's going to
bring to the bills back in April.
This is what he said.
This is what he advertised himself as.
He said I'm dynamic.
I'm explosive versatile.
I can do a lot of different things inside outside deep ball
contested catches intermediate catches and the word that stands
out to me in this quote is versatile.
If you know anything about Joe Brady, it's that he loves
versatility on offense.
So it seems like a quintessential Joe Brady pick a guy that can
do it all that can line up in the slot line up on the outside.
He's a little undersized.
That's probably why he fell to the fourth round, but there was
a lot of positive around Skylar Bell that flash forward a month
later to minicamp and all the reports about Skylar Bell were
very positive.
You can see he was making an impact right away.
He was described as a workhorse people were saying that his
route running was phenomenal that he was getting separation
and that he really was a big standout at minicamp.
So there was a lot of hype for Skylar Bell leading into
preseason and then the injury bug hit and he went down at the
the red and blue open practice that the Bills have at High
Mark.
It's it's the open practice where Josh Allen comes out in
the terrible Nickel City uniforms and tries to sell the fans
on it and get them hyped because it's the first time they've
seen the Bills in High Mark, you know, you know the practice
I'm talking about Skylar Bell ended up injuring himself at
that practice at that scrimmage, but Joe Brady said it wasn't
too serious, but he did sit out during the Panthers game.
Joe Brady said that he thinks that rookie Skylar Bell could
have played.
He said it was a lower body injury.
We later learned that it was a groin injury that kept him
out, but he said that he could have played but then we didn't
really hear anything about Skylar Bell after that leading
up to the Browns game last Saturday.
He didn't play in the Browns game.
So there was kind of a question mark about how serious it
was, but then he did return to practice on Monday.
Flash forward once again to today where not only did Josh
Allen have good praises say about Skylar Bell, but so did
Joe Brady.
He said that his return to practice was it was good to get
him back out there.
Once again, he was flying around.
It seems like that.
He just really had a lot of energy today and then Joe
Brady said officially that Bell will be playing against
the Steelers on Thursday.
So that will be exciting to really see what Bell has obviously
he won't be connecting with Josh Allen because Josh Allen
isn't going to be playing but he Skylar Bell will still be
getting those reps.
And that is really what's important with preseason on the
almost over preseason with with the regular season on the
horizon and preseason almost over it will be good for Skylar
Bell to get those reps before real action happens, especially
as a rookie.
It will be good.
But where does Skylar Bell really fit into the entire Bills
receiving core?
Because that was my question because after minicamp there
was talks that he might be a starting receiver come week
one on this team, but after the injuries, that's probably
not the case.
Here's the current depth chart for the Bills receivers at
the moment.
The top three are still DJ more Khalil Shakir Keon Coleman
not much has changed there, but Keon Coleman and DJ or Khalil
Shakir have been dealing with injuries nagging injuries this
preseason.
So maybe there will be a chance for Skylar Bell to step in
improve himself.
There's there's certainly opportunity.
He's definitely going to make it to make the team probably
as a receiver to so really this this upcoming preseason game
will tell us a lot about what to expect from Skylar Bell.
But I'm curious.
I want to hear from you guys.
What do you think?
Are you excited to see Skylar Bell on Thursday?
Is it a yes?
You're excited to see what he brings to the table.
That's what you're watching the game for or is it?
No.
Are there other players that are playing on Thursday that
you really care about and are watching for more?
And if there are do let me know in the comments who you want
to see on Thursday and who are you looking forward to seeing
in that Steelers game?
Personally, I think Skylar Bell that is my number one pick
for who I want to see.
I really want to see what he can what he has to offer for
the entire bills offense.
I mean, obviously they the bills didn't use a high ground
pick on him, but they still used a draft pick and it was
still their number one receiver off the board.
So it will I think in my opinion, it will be interesting
to see what he brings.
If you agree with me, make sure to leave a like let me know
that you do agree and that you are excited to see Skylar Bell
and if not do let me know in the comments who you are excited
to see the Steelers game is coming up quick and Thursday
night will be here before we know it.
So we will be talking about that game leading up to the game
after the game everything about the game against the Steelers
and then as I said at the top it is full go on to the Texans
and once again, we'll have you guys covered with everything
related to the Buffalo Bills here.
So make sure once again to hit subscribe if you don't want
to miss a thing.
That's all I have for today.
And as always go bills.
