Hollywood superstar Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson is currently vying to get his first Academy Award nomination due to his amazing, celebrated performance in the authentic sports drama "The Smashing Machine".
But 25 years ago, Johnson was an actor with almost no working experience – at least outside the world of wrestling – when he got a part as a hard-hitting alien on an episode of "Star Trek: Voyager".
And that experience clearly left its mark on Johnson in a positive way – not least due to his fellow cast member Jeri Ryan, who played the former Borg drone Seven of Nine on the hit sci-fi show. "She was f***ing cool, man!" Johnson says – and there's a very special reason why!

I thought I knew what Star Trek passion was all about from the fans, but only until I did it
that I realized, oh my god, this is so incredible, it's amazing. The fandom about Star Trek.
I can see I only have one minute left, but wait, there's a question that I've wanted to ask you
actually for 25 years. Oh man, let's do it. And I'm finally getting to ask now because my big
pop cultural love is Star Trek, it always has been, and I think it's still a bit relevant
because it's looking back on one of your first performances. Of course, you've done a little part
in the net. How's that? You played your dad on that 70s show. Mr. Johnson, you gave that team
of midgets an ass whooping, sir. You pile drive a little guy and the whole crowd turns on you.
But you went into outer space in Star Trek Voyager. When America's Smackdown hero takes
on Voyager's Battlestar Bane, worlds will collide. WWF's The Rock guest stars on an all-new Voyager.
Do you have any memories from that? And also, it must be wild to look back on
one of those very first acting experiences from this provisional peak of your acting career.
Oh, well, first of all, they were all amazing. And at that time, I just wanted
experience as an actor. And I was taking these roles, these cameos on these television shows,
and they had come to me and said, hey, are you interested in doing Star Trek Voyager?
I said, yeah, I would love to. Let's do it. And I went down to set and we had a great time that day.
And the crew, the cast, everybody was so awesome. But very specifically,
Jerry Ryan was amazing. You're no bigger than a Tarkanian field mouse.
Thanks insulting me by putting you in the pit to face me. I must warn you, I possess superior
strength. I'm trembling. And she was so welcoming and warm. I had never done anything before in
terms of acting. I come from the world of wrestling. And in a way, that was performance,
and it is performance. But cues, marks, dialogue, and all that was still very new to me.
But Jerry was so amazing and so cool and gorgeous. And it blew me away how just wonderfully welcoming
she was. Because you know, the truth is, at that time in my career, I was doing,
I do this show and that show. And it was just cameo, cameo, cameo.
Now, will someone explain to me what the hell is going on?
The Rock's here researching. Oh, it's very nice.
And these shows were pretty popular shows. And the stars of those shows
were popular stars. And so a lot of times they knew, oh, we're going to get this person coming
in from the world of wrestling. You know, sometimes I would show up on these sets and
it was a little bit of like, oh, here we go again, like another guy. Okay. You know,
he's never acted before and I got to carry the baggage. And I would feel that energy from some
of these folks and I got it. And I just tried to get through the day and try to learn as much as I
could. But Jerry was never like that. She was cool, man. And anyway, like moments like that,
I don't forget because it's the great reminder that you got to remember people always remember
how you treat them. Yeah. And she was amazing. So anyway, once I did that, I thought I knew what
Star Trek passion was all about from the fans, but only until I did it.
And then I realized, oh my God, this is so incredible. It's amazing. The fandom about
Star Trek. Yeah. I have no desire to inflict further damage. I'm afraid I can't say the same.
