Colombia. Indonesia. Japan. Spain. The United States.
In recent weeks, powerful earthquakes and seismic swarms have made headlines across multiple parts of the world — creating the impression that earthquakes are happening everywhere at once.
And some of these events have been genuinely significant.
On August 10, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck western Colombia, centered near San José del Palmar in Chocó. The earthquake was felt across 16 departments, with severe damage reported across multiple regions.
Then, on August 14, eastern Indonesia was struck by a magnitude 7.7 earthquake near Flores. The shallow earthquake triggered landslides, tsunami waves and extensive destruction. More than 200 aftershocks were recorded in the immediate aftermath, with later reports documenting an even larger aftershock sequence.
North Sumatra experienced another powerful event shortly afterward.
USGS recorded a magnitude 6.9 earthquake approximately 15 km north-northwest of Pematangsiantar, with a depth of roughly 172.5 km. That's a very different type of earthquake from the shallow Flores event.
And then there's Spain.
The Granada region experienced a seismic swarm, including a M5.2 earthquake near Otura/Alhendín, followed by additional earthquakes and aftershocks. Authorities eventually evacuated hundreds of residents from buildings while inspections were carried out.
Japan has also experienced significant seismic activity.
USGS lists a M6.8 earthquake in the Kumamoto region on July 28, producing very strong shaking.
And the United States has not been completely quiet either, with additional earthquakes appearing in the USGS significant-earthquake records, including activity in California and Alaska.
So what is happening?
The answer may be less mysterious — and more fascinating — than the headlines suggest.
These earthquakes are occurring in different tectonic environments.
Colombia sits within a complex zone of plate interaction.
Indonesia lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the planet's most active earthquake and volcanic regions.
Japan is another major plate-boundary environment.
Southern Spain has its own active tectonic structures.
And California and Alaska are shaped by major fault and plate systems.
That means these earthquakes are not necessarily connected to one another.
But the clustering of major events can still be scientifically interesting.
USGS records show that several notable earthquakes have occurred within a relatively short period, including the Colombian and Indonesian M7+ events.
The crucial question is whether this represents a genuine increase in global earthquake activity — or whether humans are simply noticing a dramatic concentration of earthquakes that are occurring independently.
Scientists have long emphasized that earthquakes cannot currently be predicted to a precise date, location and magnitude.
A major earthquake in one country also does not automatically mean that another major fault somewhere else is about to rupture.
But after a large earthquake, researchers closely monitor aftershocks, stress changes, fault behavior and seismic sequences.
And that's where the story becomes fascinating.
