Video Summary
AI GeneratedThe speaker provides an in-depth look at a colonial grandfather clock from their collection. The video covers the clock's unusual origin—having been rescued from a dumpster and stored in a shed for 15 years—and the extensive restoration process involving deep cleaning, mechanical adjustments, and professional woodworking to repair a destroyed door.
So I kind of get the feeling this video is long overdue. I've gotten several and I mean
several requests to make this video and I have finally gotten the motivation to do it.
So you might be wondering why we're focusing on the colonial grandfather clock.
This is going to be a rather special video because in this video I am going to be doing
another in-depth look at this clock. I know I've already done one but I at this point have gotten
a whole boatload of requests to do this and now that I just moved I think this is the perfect
time to do this. I'm gonna go over the full history and story about this clock. I'm gonna
chime it on all three chime selections and pretty much showcase everything about it because this
clock means a lot to me and it's one of my most popular clocks in my collection. So to begin I'm
gonna get into how specifically I got this. So if you're a new viewer I would recommend watching
this but if you've known me for a while you probably already know how I've gotten this.
But for new viewers here it is. It was back in mid-2018 and I still did not have any grandfather
clocks in my collection at the time. Well I didn't have a single one for quite some time but in 2018
a friend of mine came to visit my clock collection in person and here's what happened next. I was
then told that this person had this grandfather clock in his shed and it had sat there for about
15 years or so. So this person actually works for a landfill and one day someone dropped this clock
off and this person I know he found this in the dumpster and he decided to take it and he took it
back to his shed where it sat for like 15 years. Then he saw my collection like I just said. Then
he remembered he had this clock in his shed so I'd say maybe a week or so after he visited
he came over in his pickup truck with this clock and all the parts and him and another friend of
mine just hauled it down to our old basement. So yeah that's one interesting story and when I first
got this thing it was just filthy. The whole case was covered in gunk, cobwebs, dirt, you name it.
Covered in scratches. The door was damaged which I'll get into a little later and yeah this thing
was just gross when I got it and at that point I wasn't sure what I was gonna do with it.
Then at that point I finally got the urge and I totally cleaned out the whole case.
Just cleaned out the glass made it look nice and shiny and got the weights hung on the pendulum
all of that stuff. I oiled up the movement and at that point this clock was working perfectly.
However the chimes were quite slow at first and I found out that was because I had the wrong weight
on the chime side which I later realized and that has been fixed or was fixed actually.
I'll get into why I said was in just a second but yeah this clock was pretty much fixed and
it was working and now we're gonna get into the story of the door. This door was just sad.
It was totally destructed. This whole side right here was just totally ripped off
and the glass panels were also just missing pretty much. Well not really missing it did come with
them but they were just separated. So this door really was totally destructed and I wasn't sure
I was going to be able to get it fixed. But then in September of 2020 roughly two years after I
got this clock I decided to take the door over to yet another friend of mine who is good at a lot
of different woodworking projects and he just totally fixed the door up and just made it look
like new. I think you can tell he also added this it looks like to hold the glass in
and some of it all over and now this door just looks like new. There was a little scratch in
the wood like right about here which you're probably wondering or seeing this discoloration
right here. Yeah there was a bit of a discolor right there but he fixed that up I guess. It's
still doesn't look perfect you can still kind of see it on camera but the door has been fixed
and this thing is pretty much the way it was manufactured aka just like new condition
other than a couple other scratches. So yeah one heck of a story of this clock which is
pretty much the main reason why this clock is so special to me.
