Something beneath New Jersey moved—and scientists are still working to understand exactly what happened.

On April 5, 2024, a magnitude-4.8 earthquake struck northern New Jersey, sending shaking across a huge part of the eastern United States and generating more than 180,000 USGS “Did You Feel It?” reports. But the earthquake was only the beginning of a much bigger geological story.

In this DiscoverTube documentary, we investigate what scientists are uncovering beneath one of America’s most densely developed states—from ancient faults and evidence of massive volcanic activity to roughly 600 abandoned hard-rock mines, active sinkhole terrain, changing groundwater systems, and saltwater intrusion along the coast.

Far offshore, researchers have also investigated an enormous 20–22 kilometer-wide structure buried beneath roughly one kilometer of sediment. Scientists have described it as a possible ancient impact crater, potentially preserving evidence of an event that occurred tens of millions of years ago.

Using earthquake monitoring, 3D seismic simulations, geological mapping, marine seismic surveys, groundwater monitoring, and geophysical technology, researchers are gradually revealing a hidden New Jersey that looks very different from the state above.

What exactly moved during the 2024 earthquake—and how much remains undiscovered beneath New Jersey?

Watch until the end to uncover 20 extraordinary geological discoveries scientists are investigating beneath the state.
