What Just EMERGED in Los Angeles Shocked Scientists

Scientists have revealed a hidden geological structure beneath Los Angeles that could dramatically change how the city shakes during a major earthquake.
Using 273 seismic sensors, Caltech researchers mapped parts of the Los Angeles Basin reaching nearly 10 kilometers deep. That enormous layer of soft sediment can trap, redirect and amplify seismic waves, meaning two neighborhoods experiencing the same earthquake could shake very differently.
In this DiscoverTube investigation, we look at the new 3D map, why deep basins can prolong shaking, and how local geology may influence damage across Los Angeles during a future major earthquake.
The fault creates the earthquake.
But the ground beneath you can determine how violently you feel it.
