Hidden among the wooded Surrey Hills, Shere is one of England’s most beautifully preserved historic villages. This film explores its countryside, Upper Street, Middle Street, Lower Street and village square, passing centuries-old timber-framed houses, the Old Prison House, the River Tillingbourne and the Norman Church of St James, where worship has taken place since around 1190. Shere became internationally recognised through The Holiday. Rosehill Cottage was specially constructed in a nearby field and removed after filming, while Amanda and Graham’s memorable pub scene was filmed inside the historic White Horse. St James’ Church also appeared in Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, during the final ceremony where Bridget’s parents renew their wedding vows.
