Scientists Detected California’s Cliff Collapse BEFORE It Happened

California’s coastline may look calm—but scientists have discovered that some cliffs begin sending measurable warning signals hours or even days before they collapse.

In this DiscoverTube documentary, we explore a four-year Scripps Institution of Oceanography study that monitored unstable coastal cliffs using ultra-sensitive tiltmeters, extensometers, seismometers, GPS, lidar, and wave sensors. Researchers tracked five cliff collapses, and in every monitored event, instruments detected movement before failure.

One of the most dramatic cases occurred in Del Mar, where scientists detected accelerating movement and notified coastal managers on April 19, 2024. Two days later, roughly 200 tons of cliff material crashed onto the beach.

We investigate how rainfall, groundwater, powerful Pacific waves, microscopic ground movement, and widening cracks can push California’s cliffs toward collapse—and whether this technology could eventually become a real coastal landslide early-warning system.
