Iran opposes US sanctions, calls secondary sanctions illegal under international law

Iran’s Foreign Ministry has strongly opposed the US economic sanctions set to take effect on August 24. Spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei called the measures an illegal exercise of extraterritorial power and said foreign countries cannot be forced to stop lawful trade with Iran. He also argued that secondary sanctions have no basis under international law and violate the principle of sovereign equality under Article 2(1) of the UN Charter.
