North Korea launches missile barrage after Trump cuts military drills with South Korea

North Korea launching a barrage of ballistic missiles coming shortly after the U.S. started scaling down military drills with South Korea. News Nation Washington correspondent Corey Smith is at the White House. Corey, what else has President Trump been saying about North Korea's nuclear arsenal? Hey there, Drew. Leaving it to President Trump to turn a conversation about new construction here at the White House into North Korea nuclear talks. That is exactly what he did. He said yesterday that he and Kim Jong-un were actually going to be meeting later this year. He then shared some very specific details about North Korea's nuclear program. Take a listen. He has 57 very powerful nuclear weapons. Should have never allowed it to happen. They should have never allowed it. If I were president, I wouldn't have allowed it. But he's got them. Earlier this week, the president revealed he had actually reached out to Kim Jong-un to request the two of them talk. That was the day after he made a surprise announcement that joint military exercises between the U.S. and South Korea would be substantially reduced. He called them inappropriate, hostile towards North Korea. But when asked whether this was a first step in reengaging North Korea in nuclear talks, the president was coy. Well, I don't want to talk about that, but I do have a good relationship with Kim Jong-un. As you know, you've seen he didn't like Biden. He didn't like Obama. He didn't like anybody, but he likes me. In response to the president's comments, Kim Jong-un's top advisor, who also happens to be his sister, said the two men do have an excellent relationship, but she poured cold water on the president's claim that they've exchanged messages. In his statement, Kim Yo-jong said, as for the news from Washington that shortly ago there was a communication between the leaders of the DPRK and the U.S., I am not aware of it at all. It perhaps may be the only thing I do not know regarding the foreign policy of our supreme leadership. Now, if this visit actually happens, it'll be the first time Kim Jong-un and President Trump have met since 2019. Back then, the U.S. was pushing North Korea to give up its nuclear ambitions in exchange for economic sanction relief. Those talks ultimately fell apart. Since then, North Korea has conducted multiple missile tests, including the 10 short-range ballistic missiles they shot off earlier this morning. So we'll see whether that has any impact on whether President Trump and Kim Jong-un ultimately do meet later this year. Dream?
