On August 9, Tiananmen Square was packed with tourists in the middle of the summer holiday season. Behind the rows of trees, the Mao Zedong Memorial Hall was undergoing a major renovation project that had begun in March and was scheduled to continue through the end of August. At that very moment, a video began circulating online showing thick black smoke billowing into the air, clearly visible right beside the six golden Chinese characters on the memorial’s roof.
