John Jacob Astor IV’s Titanic Mansion

“ Mrs. Astor Moves Uptown”, I discussed the new Astor that was built in New York City, New York and located on Fifth Avenue & 65th Street, when it was a double mansion shared by Mrs. Astor and her son, John Jacob Astor IV and his family.
This video covers the time after the 1908 death of Caroline Schermerhorn Astor, when Mr. Astor renovates his mother’s side to incorporate it into one large, magnificent residence. See how he redecorates his mother’s out-of-fashion rooms and tears out two majestic staircases to make one combined reception hall.
The video also covers his first marriage to one of the Gilded Age’s great beauties and his second marriage to a much younger woman. Then his untimely death with the sinking of the ocean liner, RMS Titanic in 1912 and the years following his demise to the 1926 destruction of the palatial Astor mansion, once the epicenter of New York Society’s, “The 400”.
