Tornado warning issued in Queens, Nassau County

Audrey joins us now for a look at the weather and Audrey, there's a tornado warning in place now. Yes, that is correct. So I wanted to take you to the radar and show you that that line of rain that we were watching earlier that now has a flash flood warning associated with right here in Queens. We're now getting a report of a tornado warning. It's for southern Nassau County. So I'm going with this area right here. This is in effect until 7 15. It's a radar indicated rotation. So that means that we're seeing winds that are going in and out of the radar site. They're seeing a twisting as far as the radar is indicating it. That's that doesn't mean that's one being spotted on the ground by eye or spotter, but that doesn't mean that there isn't one there. So in the area of Atlantic Beach, which we're taking a look at right here, this is where there is the possibility of flying debris. So anyone in this area should take cover because at the very minimum we could have wind damage or straight line wind damage here. If not a possible tornado, as indicated by the radars again, there's a tornado warning for southern Nassau County until 7 15. So if you're in the area of Long Beach or Atlantic Beach, you definitely want to be taking cover. This is a strong thunderstorm, a severe thunderstorm actually moving northeast at about 25 miles per hour. So anyone should in this area should be taking cover, of course, because at the very minimum, we probably have some damaging winds in this area. So, of course, we'll be keeping you posted here live on our newsroom line, which will be coming up at slot Natasha over to you. All right, Audrey, thank you. And you're watching Fox five. Another check of the weather is just ahead. Um, actually, actually, they want me to throw it back to you, Audrey, to talk about the tornado warning just a little bit more because this is a very active development and what we've been going tonight. So just go a little bit on for for those who might be watching this because this is big news. Stay right here. Yeah, we can stay right here. So what we've had going on is, uh, a line of heavy rainfall coming through the area. We've had flooding rain coming in across the city, the five boroughs. And now, with this amount of this rainfall here, apparently there's been a radar indicated tornado in the area of Atlantic Beach and Long Beach. That's in southern Nassau County. The green flashing box here. You see, this is actually a flash flood warning. So within this, we've already experienced the flash flooding happening in this part of Nassau County. And now, according to the National Weather Service, they have a radar indicated rotation. That means as they're identifying on the radar, they're seeing on the radar winds going in and away in towards the radar and away from the radar. And what they're detecting is sort of rotation by the radar, and that is indicative of possible tornado on the ground. So at the very least, there's definitely strong winds happening in this area. There could be flying debris in this area. So anyone that's outdoor doors should be taking shelter so you don't get caught in any of the flying debris, mobile homes or any weak structures could be damaged by any flying debris as well as the heavy rainfall and the strong winds. So if you're in the area of Long Beach, Woodmere, anywhere in southern Nassau County, you definitely want to take cover. Atlantic Beach is also in this area. Again, a tornado warning is in effect for this region until about 7 15, which is another 16 minutes from now. We'll be experiencing probably some very damaging winds in this area. Uh, heavy rainfall, probably flash flooding too. And it, according to the National Weather Service, this cell is moving northeast at about 25 miles per hour. So if I put this actually have this on my radar, I'm gonna put this 25 miles per hour while we get this into the vicinity of probably Freeport probably heading in that direction to actually take this fan out and see where it's actually going. It's going at 25 miles per hour. These are the areas that we'll probably see next. So in the area of Oceanside, Baldwin, Freeport, if you're in these areas, you definitely want to take caution now be aware that with this cell is heading in your direction. So you may want to be aware that not only are you having experiencing heavy rainfall, you may have some damaging winds headed in your way, and there's a possibility of tornadic rotation happening as indicated by the radar by the National Weather and the National Weather Services Beach at Long Beach. So in this area, definitely want to be taking cover. Much of the air is experiencing very heavy rainfall, so it's not a time to be traveling anywhere around Nassau County. The moment you can say we have flash flood warnings, as indicated by the flashing green box here. Uh, this flash flood warning is in existence until 8 15. So that's another hour or so hour and 15 minutes. The tornado warning will continue to be effective for another 15 minutes. Uh, and if you're in this area, you definitely want to be indoors, preferably in an interior room. We say that in case there's flying debris in the area and something should come through a window, you want to be away from that. If you're in a vehicle, you probably want to stay in the vehicle away from flying debris of any sorts. Want to take shelter. And if you're in the area of Long Beach and anywhere in southern Nassau County, it appears the rain is actually moving. I actually put the radar in motion here and see. Yeah, Audrey, I've got I've got a question for you. If someone were driving right now, what's the best thing for them to do as there is a tornado warning right now in southern Nassau County? Yeah, I would definitely be going for an underpass. If you can be near an underpass, I would definitely go under there to take shelter. I would not be driving. I would actually try to pull over at some place and be somewhere other than moving because because wherever the intense rainfall is or if there's a possible tornado, you're going to be having your visibility reduced significantly. So you do not want to be driving anywhere. So I would advise anyone who's possibly driving to be pulled over. Yeah. And you know, Audrey to just kind of questions about a bigger pattern because you and I have covered these severe storms this summer and we seem to find herself in this pattern. So just kind of pulling it out a little bit. You know, we've had several tornadoes watches in recent weeks. Is this becoming an unusually active stretch for severe weather on Long Island that we are seeing? You know, it's interesting this summer we've had a lot of flooding events and it's been a summer filled with heavy rainfall events. We've had, um, a very quiet hurricane season course in the Atlantic. We've seen a lot of tropical moisture being fed up into the northeast. Uh, and I think that's what's keeping our air saturated. And when we have these triggers, like a cold front, which is what we have right now, and our air is so saturated, that's when we get these significant downpours. Because what we've had played out today is very saturated air. There hasn't been like a severe outbreak break of weather, right? We haven't. We didn't have a severe thunderstorm watch. In effect, the entire tri state area is really about flooding, and that's because our air is so saturated because it's being brought up from the south, and that's really been the culprit here. We have see how the long term weather pattern pans out to see what is causing all of that around our area. But it's been an interesting summer for sure, because of that pattern that that we're watching that that's what we've been watching how our air continuously become saturated to this southerly wind flow that's been happening all summer. Um, how often is it that there's tornadic activity out there in Nassau County? We've had tornadoes in the tri state area. We've had a couple in Brooklyn, actually. It hasn't been rare. It's not technically or we tend to hear about tornadoes more in flatter areas of the country, more like Tornado Alley. However, they're not, I should say, uncommon here. They have happened. We've had we've had E F ones here. We had actually the F two in the tri state area, too. We tend to see those more of an upstate New York. However, we've had reports. I'd have to go back and check in my records exactly when the last one was. But we've had Brooklyn. I know it's had tornadoes. We've had tornadoes on Long Island again. Not a regular occurrence for us here because of our topography. However, it is not rare either. Just looking at the just looking at the radar right now, it is just so very active. How? How dangerous is it looking? Because I know we're under a tornado warning, but the likelihood that a tornado actually is produced and touches down. Can you? Can you tell from just the way that the winds are rotating right now? Yeah, it appears I should actually do an update right now. It appears they now canceled the warning. Uh, they now canceled the warning. It appears so okay. However, we still have very heavy rainfall going through. Flooding is the main threat from the weather that we've been experiencing across the tri state area today. We were saying that all morning long, uh, from Good day New York through the noon and all afternoon. Uh, however, you know, it's it's it's uh, it's uh, yeah, here we go. So tornado warning for Nassau County has been canceled. Uh, that's because it, uh, no longer appears to be capable of producing a tornado. That's why the warning has been canceled by the National Weather Service. That still doesn't mean that we're not under some strong storms or whether that warrants, you know, taking cover being indoors because we do have flooding as a threat here. But the tornado threat has now been diminished.
