Next, statistics show that more than one in three children entering foster care do so because of
parental substance abuse. The Trump administration announces new efforts to strengthen preventative
care for families that are struggling with addiction. Aiming to intervene before a crisis
forces children into the foster system. NDD correspondent Jason Blair has more.
Too often government interventions after addiction has already pushed a family into crisis
and a child is at risk of entering foster care. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is
announcing expanded federal support for two programs that target addiction treatment for
parents with a strong focus on prevention. The first is the family-based recovery
and the second is called the wellness recovery action plan or WRAP. Kennedy says acting states
can use them to reach families earlier as well as claim federal reimbursements immediately. He
says Iowa is the first state to act. Governor Reynolds and her team have already updated Iowa's
prevention plan to put one of these approaches to work. Federal statistics show that about
34 percent of children over the age of one put into foster care are a result of parents
suffering from drug or alcohol addiction. For children under one, it's 55 percent. The early
years of a child's life are critical. We can go to them before it becomes a crisis in their homes,
in their communities and in places where family life is actually happening. Kennedy says the Trump
administration will continue to prioritize programs that demonstrate success when put into action.
We will support approaches that produce those outcomes including peer support, community
organizations and faith-based organizations. The announcement is part of the Trump administration's
great American recovery initiative which started in January. And on Thursday, First Lady Melania
Trump is teaming up with IndyCar and Fox Corporation in an effort to expand academic
opportunities for individuals transitioning from foster care. Reporting in Washington, D.C. Jason
