I’m exploring the ancient rock art of Sego Canyon in Utah, home to some of the strangest Barrier Canyon Style pictographs in the Americas. These ghostlike spirit figures may be thousands of years old, and researchers are still trying to understand what they meant. From seasonal travel routes and sacred landscapes to snake imagery, ceremony, Fremont rock art, and later Ute petroglyphs, I look at what this place may have meant through archaeology and a Native perspective. The more we listen to Native peoples and understand the land, the more this ancient rock art begins to make sense.
