President Trump welcoming a 16-year-old heroic lifeguard to the Oval Office,
along with the boy that he saved. He tells NTD
that the nation's younger generation can learn from this incredible act.
Joining us in studio is our White House correspondent Iris Tao,
who was at the event earlier today. Iris, talk to us. You were in the Oval Office
when the President was greeting this young man and the boy he saved.
What did he have to say? Sure, so it was quite a heartwarming
moment today inside the Oval Office as the President welcoming this heroic teen lifeguard
that really risked his life to save this 10-year-old boy, even though himself
was really battling these pounding waves. The President calling this young man called
Ryder Williams, only 16 years old, calling him a real hero. And he told NTD that our
nation's younger generation can really learn from this story, especially the professionalism,
the coolness and the grace that he demonstrated in these challenging moments.
What do you hope young Americans in our country take away from this incredible young man's story?
That's a great question. I mean, look, they're going to look up to Ryder, to what you do and
what you do so well. You brought tremendous grace and experience and really tremendous
grace. I've seen rescues before. I've never seen anything quite like this.
So the rescue itself happened on July 25th, just a month ago at Seabright State Beach in
Santa Cruz. And Williams saved this 10-year-old boy, Nathaniel Ryder, from pounding surf
in this beach. Also, it's really a dramatical moment where it got captured on a video that
later went viral and caught the attention of the President's son, first of all, Eric Trump,
and then ultimately the President himself. And that's why you see this moment happening with
the President inviting him to the Oval Office, and really the President telling that little boy
that he believes that it was God who was watching him. Meanwhile, Williams, this young gentleman
who did this heroic act telling NTD that he believes it was his professional training
that really helped him in those moments, also saying that he wants to be a firefighter in
the future. Here's what he told us. What would you like to do in the future? How has this
experience as a lifeguard shaped you? So I really was thinking about how to get the boy out of the
water as fast as I can. And for shaping my future, I want to be a firefighter. And the President
saying that the young man is off to a great start because he's going to personally give him
recommendations to become a firefighter in the future. Also, the parents for both the heroic
lifeguard as well as the little boy were also in the room. Of course, the dad of Williams,
incredibly proud of him, and the father of the little boy saying that he's beyond grateful for
everything that's happened. Really special moment for those two young folks, only 16 and 10. What a
story. NTD's Iris Tao. Thank you.
