Since ancient times, China has told of four women so beautiful that nature itself yielded before them. But behind each face of legend lay a fate of sacrifice, sorrow, and the weight of empires.

【 XI SHI · 沉魚 — the fish forget to swim 】
By a stream in the fallen kingdom of Yue, a girl washed silk so lovely that the fish sank beneath the water. When Yue was crushed by Wu, she was trained and sent as a gift to the enemy king, Fuchai — a living blade hidden in beauty. She bewitched him until his kingdom rotted from within and Yue rose again. She won everything her country asked of her, and lost the man she truly loved — sailing away at last into the mist, victorious and heartbroken.

【 WANG ZHAOJUN · 落雁 — the wild geese fall 】
A palace beauty painted ugly by a corrupt court artist, left forgotten for years. When the northern Xiongnu sought peace through marriage, she stepped forward. As she rode beyond the frontier clutching her pipa, her music of longing was so sorrowful that the wild geese forgot to fly and fell from the sky. She gave up her homeland for peace between nations, and lived out her days gazing south toward a home she would never see again.

【 DIAOCHAN · 閉月 — the moon hides away 】
So radiant that the moon slipped behind the clouds in shame. Raised by the loyal minister Wang Yun, she gave herself to a dangerous scheme to bring down the tyrant Dong Zhuo — promised to the mighty warrior Lü Bu, then seized by Dong Zhuo himself. Caught between two men, her tears turned them against each other, until Lü Bu struck the tyrant down. She saved a dynasty with nothing but her courage and her heart — and carried the cost alone.

【 YANG GUIFEI · 羞花 — the flowers wilt in shame 】
So lovely the very blossoms curled away when she touched them. Beloved of Emperor Xuanzong, she rose to the height of imperial glory, dancing amid peonies and gold. But favor bred corruption, and rebellion swept the land. Fleeing the capital, the emperor's own soldiers demanded her life at Mawei. With a white silk sash beneath a pear tree, the most beloved woman in the empire met her end — and the emperor mourned her under the cold moon for the rest of his days.
