Thank you so much for following this restoration journey!

In the previous episodes, we carefully removed the layers of dirt and old yellowed varnish that had hidden the painting for centuries. During that process, we also made an extraordinary discovery beneath the varnish: the artist's signature, finally giving an identity to the hand behind this mysterious portrait.

But removing the varnish also revealed the true condition of the painting. Numerous abrasions, old damages and paint losses had become visible, and a long and extremely meticulous retouching process was still ahead.

In this final episode, I begin by filling some of the losses with conservation putty, carefully preparing them for retouching. An intermediate varnish is then applied, creating an isolating layer between Isaac Paling's original paint and my restoration work.

And then begins one of the most demanding stages of the entire conservation: retouching.

Little by little, the distracting losses and abrasions are reintegrated, always respecting the surviving original paint. It is an extremely time-consuming process, but gradually the portrait begins to recover its visual unity and the elegance it had lost over the centuries.

Once the retouching is complete, the painting receives its final varnish, applied using both spray and brush techniques to achieve the desired surface and protection.

While the varnish is drying, attention turns to the beautiful historic frame. Both the main frame and its inner secondary frame are carefully cleaned, and the dark inner frame receives a protective wax treatment before everything is finally assembled again.

And then comes the moment I have been waiting for since this painting first arrived at my studio.

The portrait returns to its frame.

The young woman who arrived hidden beneath centuries of dirt, yellowed varnish and damage can finally be seen again. Her delicate complexion, the blue and brown fabrics, the pearls and the subtle modelling of her face have returned, allowing us once again to appreciate the remarkable work of Isaac Paling.

After a long and challenging restoration, this beautiful Dutch lady is finally ready to return home.

Thank you for joining me throughout this entire conservation journey and for following her transformation from the very beginning.
